When the going gets tough, Dog . . . takes a nap

Dog can Sit.
He can Stay.
He can even Dance.
But when he's in charge, can he keep the cats in line?
All one, two, three, four, five of them?

With slapstick silliness and utterly earnest charm, Dog will quickly wiggle his way into preschoolers' hearts.

There is no way you will not fall in love with a story about a dog who is left in charge of babysitting five adorable, loving cats. From the very beginning of this picture book you are love struck by the gorgeous end papers of the dog show casing many different facial expressions. The stage is set when the family leaves the house and asks the dog to hold down the fort. The owners love the dog, and the dog loves the owners, so the dog does not want to disappoint them. However, as soon as they lea...more

I loved this book! Dogs are my favorite animals and always have been, so that may play a part in why this book caught my eye. It tells a story about how Dog is loved by his owners and left in charge of five cats. While dog is in charge of these cats, they make a huge mess. Dog does everything he can to make things right, but falls asleep. I guess the cats felt sorry for him so they cleaned up the mess they made for him. Normally dogs and cats are enemies, but in this book, they are best friends!...more

Dog loves his owners. He loves the attention they give him and the treats. But one day they go out and leave him in charge of the five cats. It is a disaster! The cats are every where and every time dog tries to get them to behave he makes a mess. Then he eats all their treats which makes him sleepy. While he his napping the cats clean up the mess and then nap with dog. The owners come home and everything is perfect.

This book was so cute. The illustrator and author completely understand animals....more

Dog is a good dog. He is very good at following instructions and doing what his people say. Dog is a smart dog. He understands what is expected of him. When his people go they tell dog that he is in charge and he must “Watch the cats, and make sure they don’t get in any mischief.” Dog sure tries. But no matter what happens those cats just want to be cats and do all sorts of crazy things. Pretty soon dog is exasperated and the house is pretty much destroyed. As dog takes a cat nap, the cats prove...more

Dog in Charge is a book about some owners that leave their dog home to watch their four cats. Once the owners leave, the cats start to destroy the house. The dog is worried that he will not a treat when he gets home if the house is a mess. Once the cats realize that they are upsetting the dog, they feel bad and help put the house back together. The owners return home and the dog gets a treat. I really enjoyed this book and loved the illustrations I thought they were quite humorous. I think it wo...more

Dog loves the praise his family showers on him whenever he does something good. He also loves the dog treats they give him as a reward. But when the family leaves him in charge while they go to the store, things go awry. He can't find the five cats, and he's supposed to keep them in line. As he hunts them down, he causes quite a mess. He even ends up gobbling up their cat treats. While he sleeps, the cats come to his rescue and clean up everything. Dog is a very well behaved Bulldog. But how will he cope when he is left in charge of 5 independent cats, when his family goes out? wp Will he be able to keep tabs on all if these rambunctious felines!? That's the basis if this well illustrated short story in picture book style. K.L. Going does a great job on her first picture book, creating a charming character that is immediately lovable. Who wouldn't burst out laughing at a Bulldog in a tutu? Ben Santat's illustrations are expressive and fun...more

I love this book! I am a devout "dog person" and did not expect to be equally captivated by the feline characters in the story-- but I was! In this case the dog and cat characters together are what make the story engagingly and unbelievably cute, funny & sweet.

The illustrations by Dan Santat are spectacular! They fill the pages and take on a decidedly three-dimensional feel as you read. Young readers will find reading this book similar to experiencing Dreamworks-type animation--without the s...more

This book about a tutu-wearing dog and his five feline housemates is cute. The illustrations make it even cuter. It is lively but sparse story about what happens when the humans leave dog in charge while they are away. He tries to herd the cats, but as you know....herding cats is never easy. So he must wait for them to make up their minds to help.

Charming, funny book I recommend for 3-6 year olds.

A fast and fun read for preschoolers and young children
When Dog is left alone to watch over his five feline companions, he thinks it will be easy. But five cats can cause a lot of mischief, and Dog learns that being in charge is hard work. Filled with beautiful illustrations, and cute characters, Dog in Charge is a fun read for preschoolers and young children.
Recommended for readers age 3-8.

This story is about a cute dog with big personality that is given the opportunity to be in charge at home when the owner leaves. He is supposed to watch over the five cats that live there with him. The cats end up making a mess and causing trouble. Dog tries to lure the cats to him by getting cat treats. Instead he eats them and falls asleep. This story is a great example for young students to see how and why responsibility is important.

Dog can sit, stay, and even dance in a circle--all of which make him a Very Good Dog, indeed. But when his human family goes to the store, Dog is left in charge of five mischievous cats and chaos erupts. Will his human family still think he is a Very Good Dog when they return? Pair this with Katie Loves the Kittens for a purr-fect storytime honoring cats and dogs.

This book is a lot of fun plus it's written by K.L. Goingand illustrated by Dan Santatso that's a great double bill! (I'm not a pet person at all but I got a BIG kick out of this one!)

This story shows how dogs feel they rule but cats do as they please. In the end all animals work together for the love of the family. The end pages on this book are very interesting with all the pictures of the dogs’ faces. As a dog and cat love this is completely how I see dogs and cats getting along then surrendering to the cat.

Fun story, excellent illustrations. Dan Santat's style is so distintive. I especially liked the facial expressions he is able to put on dog and cats. These share so much of the story. Could be a possibility in the Wolfcott, but the other Santat book, Oh No, Not again will get more love from 4th graders.

Pressure to be in charge of something is pretty heavy and grows heavy when things are not going very well. Choice of words are vivid and rythmical..like "fwomp!Kerplooie, poof, bonk, topple!"
Simplistic yet eloquent for describing moves of cats and the dog.. material like ash and powder.

Dog is set with the task to babysit 5 cats. Nothing goes as planned, but the cats right their wrongs out of love and devotion to Dog, which keeps him looking good in his owner's eyes. Great book for dog and cat lovers, full color cartoon-like illustrations. Good read aloud.

A beloved dog, adored by his owners, is left in charage of the cats while his people are away. Will the misbehavior of said felines endanger his status as "good dog?" Cute illustrations and a series of antics makes this a good read-aloud for preschoolers up to early elementary.

This was precious! I just got this book for my library (you know, preparing for future kids and to read with my niece and nephew when they visit) and I had to read it first. It is absolutely adorable and I love it - I'm sure the kids will, too! :-D

Poor responsible dog being put in charge of all these chaos-creating cats! But lucky reader who gets to giggle over the mayhem. The artwork in this picture book is so expressive. The silly story and the counting make this a fun (and instructive) read-aloud.

Bright colorful picture book about a dog that lives for praise and treats from his owners. One day he is left in charge of the 5 cats that also share the home. Will their mischievous ways make Dog loose favor with his people? Is he destined for the dog house?

pb5: I truly enjoyed this story. I feel that child with younger siblings should be read this book. It shows how even when things are going rough with the people around you that no matter what they love you and will have your back.

Cute. A dog loves the praise he gets from his owner. So when he is put in charge of five cats while she goes out, he fears he will lose his treats because the cats made a mess. The cats, however, surprise the dog in the end..

The best part of this somewhat predictable story is Santat's cartoony illustrations. Expressive and tightly composed, they keep us engaged as we watch to see if Dog can keep the cats in line while his owners are away.

A bulldog in a tutu, a cat with undie-pants on it's head. What's not to like? Nothing, that's what. After having read this about 3000 times in the past month I can recommend it without reservations :)

Cute, funny picture book! A little long for storytime, maybe good for a slightly older crowd? Definitely a good sit-down-and-read-together book!

LOVE the illustrations - Dan Santat has a way about him :)

Good book,
Smart book,
The very best book!

This book is simply awesome, and will strike a chord with single dogs who live with a clowder of cats--and the heads of such mixed-species households!
Kellee
What a great pairing here between Going's entertaining story and Santat's cartoonish, colorful illustrations. Love the message of friendship and the vocabulary Going uses.
