We are introduced to Beth (Elizabeth; Lizzy) and Rachel through Beth's flashbacks of their trip through Europe. Liz being the responsible one of the two. As usual, she watched over Rachel while she partied a bit too hard at a local bar. While there, they attracted the wrong kind of attention from Markko Bolvek, a local werewolf. He abducts a not yet sober Rachel and Liz. She watches Rachel get attacked and killed before managing to escape.

Flash forward 2-3 years, Beth has spent much of her time back in the US wandering from one place to another, always looking over her shoulder and never settling down. Not until she gets a job at a local coffee shoppe and cafe in Portland, Oregon where she forms a bond with the shoppe's owner, Angie and another employee. The two ladies make her laugh and without knowing it, help her get to a place emotionally where she can truly begin to rebuild her life.

Angie, a long-time mother-like figure in his life, tries to sway Braden Edwards, from approaching Beth when she notices his piqued interest in her. She warns, "Not that one. She's complicated. Not quick to socialize. There's a past there. She's not suited to casual romances." But, he can't resist. "He had to know her."

Braden's attempts to break through Beth's shell as they get to know each other were adorable. He's charming, handsome and funny. Beth's equally nervous, this being her first date in three years. Their dates quickly turn hot as Braden(view spoiler) is unable to hold back. From there, things are hot and cold between the couple as Beth tries to overcome the horrors of her past and the discoveries they make of each other.

Past and present collide when the shadow Beth's been hiding from emerges to have his revenge. There are a lot of things the couple haven't shared about themselves when he appears, throwing their relationship into a spiral and neither is sure what will happen next. Or if it's even possible to have a relationship at all.

Amanda Alvarez created a dark, emotional and steamy PNR that draws you in and keeps you intrigued throughout. I'd definitely read another book by this author. I also hope that this may turn into a series. I'd really enjoy seeing more of Braden's family, who were a great addition to the story. Especially Lucy, Braden's sister, who quickly fills the whole in her heart left by losing Rachel. Of course, I wouldn't mind reading more about his brothers either. :)

Hunting Human is a very compelling emotional read. Be warned this book can be brutal. I truly enjoyed this book I couldn’t put it down even though I found the story with a back in fourth relationship between the hero and heroine and the heroine Beth at times very shellfish. I just had to keep reading about this human lady being put in a brutal situation with a pack of wolves. The side-characters are equally just as lovable and the bad guy in this novel is particularly dark and warped. For me, the only thing missing was more werewolf action but I'm hard to satisfy on that front so I won't hold it against Amanda E. Alvarez.

The beginning chapters give readers a sneak peak into Beth's past. However, the story returns to present day before giving us a few of the key puzzle pieces. Don't worry, you won't have to wait until the end to find out what happened but yes, you do have to wait. I was left feeling curious, anxious and a little confused. But then we meet today's Beth and she seems to have a lot of issues. She doesn't trust easily and is incredibly strong-willed. It was easy to understand the reasons behind most of her actions but her stubbornness was frustrating at times.

Braden is the kind of guy that every little girl dreams of marrying when she grows up. He's chivalrous, sympathetic and a hurricane in bed. He forgets to think before he speaks a few times which made me tone down my crush on him a few notches but overall - two thumbs up. Also, there are a couple of bed-frame-breaking encounters between Braden and Beth that add a bit of spice to the overall werewolf action.

Be prepared for Amanda E. Alvarez's curve balls throughout this book. There are only a handful but when they strike you'll find yourself looking around trying to figure out where in the heck they came from. There's a bit of wolfish goodness peppered amongst the pages but most of the characters' problems seem to be of the human variety. I wish there'd been more four-legged action but the werewolf element was relevant to the overall storyline. That made me happy. One of my pet peeves is when supernaturals are added into a story as an afterthought and are generally irrelevant to the plot.

Braden's family was comforting and warm. I couldn't help fantasizing about pulling up a hair at their dinner table and joining them for a meal. They're all just so kind and loving. I took an immediate liking to them. Chase was a good addition to the mix as well. He's part of the family but also not and one of the only ones who could understand what Beth is going through.

Hunting Human is a fast-paced read that will keep you riveted from start to finish. The action's plentiful, the sex is hot and the plot will keep you guessing until the very end. This book ranks low on the werewolf but high on all of the others so I can't really fault it. This novel is a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.(less)

I loved this book. The werewolf culture was interesting, and I love the Braden and his family. The romance between Beth and Braden was sweet. In this book, the heroine (Beth) is the one who needs to overcome issues in order to move forward in life. Beth has to come to terms with werewolves, her past attack, the loss of her family, her entire life is different and she never learned how to cope. Braden’s family, the Edwards, really help her out. I enjoyed getting to meet the different members of the family, and I hope I see more of them in the future. There are serious issues in the book, like Beth’s violent attack, but there are also plenty of humorous touches and light-heartedness that make the book very well rounded. Plus, there are some pretty hot romantic scenes as well.
I loved the main character, Beth. She had been through a lot, but she was surviving. I like how she took her time getting to know Braden, she didn’t learn quite enough at first, but nothing is ever perfect. Beth is protective, caring, defiant when she needs to be, and she tries to he self-sufficient, almost to a fault. I like how she opens up to help when it’s the best choice, and can let her pride down when she needs to.
I have to hand it to Amanda Alvarez, for her first novel, this was excellent work. I am very pleased to have found a new author to follow, and I am very much looking forward to more excellent reading.

Finally able to settle down at least for few months at a job at a coffee shop in Portland, Oregon puts her in the path of Braden Edwards who very much wants to get closer to her. But he doesn’t tell her who and what he his. And the tenuous relationship they have begun, becomes complicated because being involved with Braden puts her in between a centuries-old rift between the Bolveks and the Edwards, two werewolf clans. Who are at war.

Hunting Human was an incredibly romantic read and there are points in the book that Alvarez puts a double spit-shine on her craft…when Beth and Rachel are hunted down…her eventual metamorphosis into a werewolf, her kidnapping by Braden (the trunk scene is great), and her turning away from Braden. It’s these outliers, these bits of intensity that show that Alvarez knows her romance, and what it will take to elicit thrills and suspense in her audience. I’d like to see more of this. We also have keen insight into who Beth and Braden are thanks to Alvarez’s easy dialogue, interspersed with a cast of great supporting characters.

Who intrigued me more was Chase, who was rescued as a boy by the Edward’s clan. There is a restless feel to his character, an understated violence that Alvarez wrests back…we see glimpses when he trains Beth…hints in his behavior, a self-destructiveness and also a yearning. And there is the muted attraction that Lucy and he have that I would like to see in the next Alvarez book.

Hunting Human might not reveal anything new in paranormal romance, but its focus was strictly set on delivering every drop of romance possible, and it succeeded. There is something to be said about the sultry unfolding of a romantic piece like Alvarez’s, seductive, intoxicating, getting just a bit tipsy before you realize it. It was an intensely satisfying read, full of passion, suspense, riddled with surprises, and just enough of a plot to keep the reader desiring more. I would like a second serving of Chase please!

I picked up Hunting Human by Amanda E. Alvarez because Holly at Book Binge had mentioned that she'd read it and liked it, and that the story had lingered with her. She's right. It's an interesting story, one I had my issues with, but overall packed a decent emotional punch.

It's an interesting story, one I had my issues with, but overall packed a decent emotional punch.

Elizabeth Williams is on the run. She has been for two years, since a nightmarish night in Estonia turned her world upside down. While on the typical post-college backpacking in Europe trip, she and her best friend, Rachel, are at a bar. She encounters a man who disquiets and frightens her, and she drags a drunken Rachel from the bar, rather than risk a confrontation with this scary man. Instead, she finds him about two blocks from their hostel. They are unceremoniously dumped into a van and taken to the wilderness. The girls find themselves being hunted by something that should only occur in nightmares, a pack of werewolves. Rachel is caught and is brutally murdered before Beth's eyes. Beth, whose fight instinct is strong, manages to kill the werewolf who attacked Rachel and escape.

When she returns to civilization, shes institutionalized immediately, and through therapy and drugs learns to deal with the traumatic after effects of Rachel's murder. Well, almost all the after effects. You see, Beth was bitten by the wolf, and now is horrified to find herself changing with the full moon. She's unable to control the change, and yet disgusted by the fact that she has now become that which killed her best friend. She's been on the run, trying to cope with the horror that her life has become.

For the last five months she's been living in Portland, OR, working at a coffee shop. One day, Braden Edwards walks through the door. Braden owns a successful construction company, and is immediately and irrevocably captivated by Beth. He realizes almost immediately that Beth has been traumatized and works hard to earn her trust. He woos her, taking her to dinner and getting to know her. And little by little they begin to trust each other. All of that changes when the brother of the wolf that attacked the girls arrives in Portland seeking vengeance against Beth. When Beth and Braden encounter Markko Bolvek, he attacks her. Imagine Beth's surprise when Braden changes into a werewolf and engages Markko in battle. Braden is shocked to find Beth bearing the marks of the Bolveks, his family's long time enemy. He and his brother restrain Beth, throw her in the trunk of his car, and head to his family's home to consult with his father about what to do next. Needless to say, Beth is mightily pissed off when she gets out of the trunk. Will she be able to explain her past to Braden? Will he be able to overcome his feelings of betrayal and listen to her? And will they be able to protect Beth from Markko Bolvek, who is intent on revenge?

There's a lot to like about this book. I love a traumatized heroine. One with *real* trauma. And Beth is that girl. She's a survivor, one who is trying so hard to cope with all that has happened to her. And the author does a very credible job in conveying both the extreme horror of what happened to Beth, and the guilt, and sorrow that she feels constantly. She's wary and scared, and the reader understands her reasons for being so. She's also sensible, and has a strong spine, despite being hurt. She's a tremendously likable character.

Likewise, Braden is likable. Although his reaction to Beth's change was extreme in my opinion, his apology is genuine and when he hears the story of her past, he's outraged on her behalf, and determined to try to help her deal with what she has become.

My issue with the story is that it takes a LONG time for Beth's past to come out. Too much happens that we don't understand before her past is explained. There were occasions while reading the book that I genuinely thought I'd missed a chapter. I understood that something horrible had happened, but it took too long for the truth of it to come out. That being said, once it did come out, I thought that both Beth and Braden reacted in believable ways, and the trust that is slowly built between them is lovely to read.

My second issue with the story is that there is a final action scene, which is well written, but the HEA after it is too rushed. The characters are just beginning to trust and truly love at the end of the story, and while the epilogue works to show the characters finding their HEA, I would have liked to see them spend more time together to solidify that relationship before Beth makes the decision she does. I felt her choice seemed to come out of left field.

Overall, the book is an emotional, strongly written romance with some flaws in the story. I think that Ms. Alvarez has a strong narrative voice and a good grasp on character development. I look forward to reading more from her, and will be interested to see which of Braden's brothers (and youngest sister, Lucy) get the next book. She's definitely piqued my interest. Hunting Human is an interesting werewolf story, one that is worth your time.

What can I say? I was enthralled with this title. Hunting Human is a must read for anyone that loves a good paranormal romance! The cover is gorgeous too!

Braden was really digging Beth. He was starting to feel like she might be the one when all of a sudden he realizes she's got connections to one of his family's oldest enemies. He isn't sure what her connection to his enemy is, so he does a little kidnapping of his own. Naturally this doesn't endear him to Beth. Can the two of them work past their distrust of each other to defeat their enemy? And will love triumph in the end?

This book was much darker than I expected it to be. What happens to Beth in the beginning of the book was heartbreaking. To survive something like that and come back from it relatively whole is a pretty amazing thing. For her to open herself up to Braden was a pretty huge thing, which meant what she considered his betrayal of her was even more devastating.

Even though I was angry at Braden for the way he treated Beth at first, I understood his reasons for being suspicious of her. Likewise, Beth's anger and mistrust worked in context. What didn't work was the way Beth blew hot and cold. She'd snuggle up to Braden willingly enough, then push him away, disgusted with him as much as her own reactions to him. I understood at first, because Braden had betrayed her trust, but the longer it went on the less sympathy I had for her.

As I said, I was angry at Braden for the way he treated Beth, especially considering a lot of it was motivated by hurt pride. As the novel progressed, however, I was able to move past that because he truly wanted what was best for Beth. Yes he made a mistake, but he admitted it and apologized.

The shifter dynamics here really worked for me. Beth has denied her animal side, never allowing herself to learn to shift. Braden and his family help her learn to accept it and show her how to shift. That was one of the most fascinating parts of the novel.

This isn't a perfect story, but I couldn't stop thinking about it once I finished. The contrast between human emotions and animal nature made for a fascinating read.

I had a couple of friends recommend this book to me, so I thought I better check it out and I ended up being glad that I did.

I liked Beth, you knew she was running from something bad, she was so skittish you wanted to know what it was. I liked how Braden didn't come on strong with Beth, she wouldn't have responded well to that. Their romance at the start had me smiling with how sweet it was.

The title says it all: Hunting Human. Heroine Beth Williams is living in present day Portland, Oregon, with one hell of a horrible past. One that left her privy to witnessing the death of her sister-like friend as well as leaving her with an additional outcome that can not be reversed. Jumping from city to city in hopes of avoiding her past and coming to terms with her 'new' self, Beth finds herself finally comfortable in her surroundings and in the attention of handsome Braden Edwards. However, Beth stubbornly refuses to let down her guard, open her heart to, and trust Braden. But, when vicious Markko shows up to finally claim his vengeance, Beth will have to learn to trust someone -- either Braden (who has a secret of his own) or his family, who embodies everything Beth has ever wished for.

Hunting Human gives readers a nice action-packed romance as well as the intricate and hurtful backstory of heroine Beth. The plot of the story and the writing structure are approached from a different direction. Readers will only get to see Beth's horrible backstory experience at certain times throughout the present day story when it's necessary to reveal a little more information as to why she feels or acts the way she does, or why something is taking place. I really liked Ms. Alvarez's decision to take this approach because I felt like it helped in adding to the suspense of the story.

Readers will see one side of Werewolves who take advantage of the power that their uniqueness gives them and how they use it for evil and harm. Ms. Alvarez then demonstrates the counter-balance to that side with compassion, true family values, and a pack that harnesses their gift and embraces the good in it. I appreciated that the author substantiated the fact that there are good and bad in all creatures, including those that abuse power. This added to the overall feeling that what you were reading could happen in real-life (if, of course, werewolves were real! *g*).

Conflict isn't just saved for the plot in Hunting Human. Amanda Alvarez brings these characters to life through realistic human emotions, the good and the bad, and gives them personalities that you can believe. She establishes a fantastic balance of light and edginess through the different forms of interactions and dialogue, and even adds some fantastic humorous lines!

The two main characters, Beth Williams and Braden Edwards, seem like they could be your neighbors. The shy waitress who keeps her life a secret and distances herself from others in fear of them seeing who and what she truly is, and the charming, older brother disposition found in business owner, Braden. Their attraction is instant, but especially cautious on Beth's part. While everyone once-in-awhile I wanted Beth to so badly let go of her past and trust Braden, it is also very clear (especially as the book progresses) as to why she doesn't, so I couldn't fault her too much. Not to mention, Beth undergoes the most substantial character growth in the book. In order for the fabulous ending to take place, she has to be in that doubtful, untrusting, angry, and hurting disposition throughout a large part of the book. Because of the hardships that have littered Beth's past, this story is about growth, trust, and acceptance of one's self and others that are like those who destroyed her past.

The romance is subtly fantastic!! Ms. Alvarez has the notion of show not tell down pat. I absolutely loved how Braden was always there for Beth, allowing her the space she needed to come to terms with what she had been 'turned' to become and how he assisted her throughout the process. Braden never pushed during the story, but still let Beth know just what she meant to him. *swoons*

Heat graces the pages, but the sex is without graphic details and somewhat 'light'. Or maybe that's just because I read a lot of smut? LOL! There are more interrupted moments than anything.

The secondary characters are fabulous! It doesn't take long for Beth to be introduced to Braden's family -- and not in a traditional way either. His family is so vibrant, well developed, and likable that I seriously wish I knew them all! Younger sister Lucy, is full of life, gives great advice, and is the doted-on sibling. The brother I most wish to have his book next is Chase! Wow! The brooding, alpha male caught my attention very early on, and the more page time he had, the more I wanted.. well, more!! :)

Hunting Human is a great addition to the paranormal romance genre. Readers who delight in romance reads with dynamic and three-dimensional characters that face realistic challenges and feelings, who may also like a little edginess with their romance, and who thoroughly enjoy empowering and swoon-worthy endings are sure to enjoy this book! This is a keeper for me and I'm definitely looking forward to what Ms. Alvarez will give us next!!(less)

Review: This book absolutely blew me away! It was amazing from beginning to end. It was extremely well written with characters that I could see coming to life as I read. After reading this book, I have decided I want to become a werewolf. I read this book in one day. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about reading it. This is the type of book I enjoy. This book sticks with you and you will not forget it.

Beth is an independent woman with few acquaintances and no close friends. Running from a painful past that she cannot bring herself to face, she does not want to have friends that she will just end up leaving behind. She is about to learn, though, that sometimes having the right friends can help her come to grips with the pain from her past and to accept her future with open arms.

Braden is a solid man who comes from a close and solid family. When he sees something he wants, he goes after it and he wants Beth. There is just something about her that calls to him. Now he just has to figure out how to get passed her defenses to make her see that she can trust him.

In this book, Beth has to learn to trust Braden and to let go of a past that she has held on tightly to for years. She also has to learn to accept a part of her she has tried so hard to ignore. When an enemy from one horrible night years ago finally tracks her down, she will have to decide whether or not she can trust the love that Braden and his family have for her.

This is definitely worth curling up with and reading. I would suggest, however, that you prepare yourself to read it all in one sitting.(less)

This isn't a typical shifter book. It is a paranormal, but I would categorize it more as horror paranormal. The book was at times brutal and very graphic. It had a great depth of emotion and kept me hooked throughout. Fantastic story! I fell fast and didn't put it down until it was over! I love the fresh new take on the whole werewolf idea! If this first book is any indication of how great future books will be I can't wait!

A really good shifter book is hard to lay your hands on and I’ve got to admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve read one. Except for one thing, I would have given this book a 5 star rating. I felt like the author did not follow through on the ending. Mostly, I felt like Braden was more intelligent than Alvarez gave him credit for. I know there needed to be a dramatic ending but that’s all it was, a dramatic ending that just felt rushed and a bit out of character.

It takes a pretty special shifter book to hold my attention in a market that’s been glutted with shifter books. This one did ... to the point that I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it, and wanted to be reading instead of doing pretty much anything else.

This one did ... to the point that I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it, and wanted to be reading instead of doing pretty much anything else.

That’s not to say the book was perfect, it wasn’t. But it was pretty darn close.

We start with a strong, independent heroine who’s clearly a nurturer and protector – in the beginning, she’s taking care of her less strong best friend in a situation that’s terrifying. Before we discover what the resolution to that is, we flash forward a couple years to our heroine today. Beth is in a seemingly mundane situation, working in a coffee shop, joking with her boss, and meeting a hunky guy that tempts her, for the first time in a long time, to think about dating.

It’s here that Ms. Alvarez well and truly hooked me. Not that the beginning wasn’t exciting, but I’m a fan of character driven stories, and her characters were amazingly real. Unique. Three dimensional. In only a few pages, she managed to populate her story with people I could care about and enjoy. From grouchy but caring Angie, to sexy and sweet Braden, and even Marianne, who’s barely more than a walk-on character. They’re all distinct, interesting and real.

Truly, it’s because we do care about all these people that the book is so stellar, because as the danger grows, and more people are pulling into it, we worry. The antagonist here is incredibly evil and terrifying, and he thrives on making the people he stalks afraid. So we are afraid.

The plot is full of conflict, angst and twists. And through it all, Beth acts in a way I understand. She struggles with trust issues, and a paranormal world she barely believes can exist. When it seems as though she is betrayed by the hero, Braden, she doesn’t forgive him immediately despite her attraction. While hormones certainly rage on through this book, and the heat between Braden and Beth constantly simmers on the pages, it doesn’t rule either one of them.

Braden is a fabulous hero. He has his flaws, thankfully, because who wants perfection? But he’s got a heart the size of Texas and is sexy and smart. It’s no wonder Beth can’t seem to stop how she feels for him, especially after she meets his family. And, I really loved his family. Kudos to Ms. Alvarez for her skill in characterizations. I know I said it before, but I’ll say it again. The only one of the main characters that felt a little hazy was Braden’s brother, Caleb. But this story is clearly meant to be one in a series, and I’m betting the author rectifies that in the future.

The only thing that kept this from being a “best book” for me was one thing, one TSTL thing that the hero does near the end. I understand that it was necessary to set up the climax, but I couldn’t help but think he was smarter than that. It’s a little thing, but it bugged me the more I thought about it, so I couldn’t give this story perfect marks. In the grand scheme of things, though, it won’t keep this book off my keeper shelf. And it won’t keep me from waiting anxiously for another book from the author. If she keeps up this level of writing, she’ll be an auto buy for me for sure.

Truthfully, this story had everything I enjoy: excitement, great characters, plenty of heat and lots of sweet romance that made my heart happy.

Beth Williams watches her friend be murdered by ruthless wolves that were hunting them in the woods. Hunting Human by Amanda Alvarez creates an emotional and steamy story that will satisfy any paranormal romance reader. Beth tries to start a new life in Portland Oregon but her past and lose of her friend are always at the back of her mind. Beth is being hunted by one of the men who kidnapped her years ago and he wont stop until he has his revenge.
While working at a local coffee shop she meets Braden Edwards whose attraction to her is undeniable. They start a steamy but short-lived romance once her past and his secret come crashing together. Braden isn’t human; he’s just like the man who his hunting her and Braden discovers that she too is one of them.
Hunting Human is romantic and I enjoyed the way that Alvarez writes the story of the present and the past around each other. You get Beth’s perspective on what happened to Beth and her friend at the start of the book and later on find out how her friend died and how Beth escaped. When Braden finds out Beth is connected to his long time enemy the one who originally kidnapped her he takes her home with him, well in his trunk, which is an interesting scene and not the most pleasant way. Their interactions are intense and exciting, you really have an idea how these two are fighting their true emotions for each other.
Braden has a great family, many who are wolves themselves and create a more family feel environment for Beth, which gives the story a happier tone. I really enjoyed her interactions with the family and her friendship with Braden’s sister Lucy. I also liked the character Chase, who is not their bother by blood but he has a connection to the man after Beth. He is very protective of the family and very much of Lucy, which is a whole other story that I’m interested in.
The story is the typical werewolf paranormal romance, but the side story over the romance keep me reading and liking it all the way through. You get some hot and steamy scenes, the romance and passion between the characters is defiantly a high point. It had surprises and action, with lots of conflicts that keep you wanting more. I hope that we get another book, possible one with Chase or Lucy?

RECOMMENDATION:
This is an adult novel that carries a lot of adult elements such as, sexual content, violence and mature settings. I would say from ages 18 and up. Recommended for fans of Nalini Singh, Lora Leigh, and Larissa Ione.

And their courtship is great romance-reading. But neither of them knows that the other is a wolf. What’s more, Markko, the werewolf behind Beth’s attack all those years ago… is now searching for her again. And he happens to be from a clan that is Braden’s family’s greatest enemy. Of course, when each of them finds out that other can shift, there’s mistrust, ansgt, and a lot of drama. And that’s just the beginning. Markko is stalking them both.

There were so many things I liked about this story. I think my favorite was the initial relationship between Beth and Braden. It was sweet, sexy and believable. So when they turn on each other, I found myself gripping my e-reader, anxious for a reconciliation. The back-story of Beth’s attack is played out in a series of flashbacks. It’s terribly effective, because the horror of it all is meted out in increments, over time. The secondary characters are fleshed-out and likeable. (I’m still trying to find out who Lucy was trying on that dress for! I’d love a sequel featuring her, or Chase… or both.)

The only thing that kept me from 5 stars on this one was an angst-overload between Beth and Baden about 3/4 of the way into the book. I was ready for them to start understanding and trusting each other a bit before they got there.

Overall, I’m so glad I gave this book a chance. I only wish I had read it sooner. I hope to hear more from this author. 4 1/2 stars.

I was really excited to get this novel. It's one of my first with werewolves (does Twilight count?), and I expected a lot of violence. Instead, I was confused. Beth and Braden spend a lot of time bouncing back and forth with each other, sometimes on the same page! First they like each other, then they play the cautious role. They sleep together again, but she decides she doesn't trust him. You read about her yearning for him, and he leaves for a week. And this goes on and on. I just couldn't get a grasp of what they really wanted from one another.
Hunting Human starts off with a lot of chemistry: dark, steamy, dangerous. But it fizzles and the rest of the novel feels a little dry. I also felt like the author was also leading me off on a tangent with one of the main characters, hinting that he was one of the "bad guys" but doesn't follow through and re-introduces a character who hadn't been seen since the very beginning of the novel.
I felt like there was no real character depth. It felt a little wooden to me. And while I don't want to spoil anything for other readers, some things seemed to have been left without being wrapped up, but not in some obvious lead in for a second novel (it seems like there may be one).
There was just a lot of back-and-forth for me that didn't make sense. I didn't understand why characters chose the actions they did and other characters seemed to be there as props.
Good character development is important to me, so I can identify with them, and understand them. I just don't feel like this had it. The plot was murky and a little unbelievable (even for a fantasy novel).
I can really only give this two stars, because it certainly wasn't terrible. It just wasn't great.(less)

This was a very decent wolf book (and we all know how picky I am with my wolves)

The descriptions of the transformations/shifting were very interesting and the details were fab. I loved how the author explained things when the humans changed into wolves.

I did think that they're minds should have gone all canine instead of retaining their human ones... but that's just me. It was still very nice.

The only problem I had with this book was the romance part. It seemed a bit rushed.

What Beth needs to realize is; no matter how hard you try your never gonna out run your past. Before you know it, your face down feeling it sink it's teeth into you. So here's my thoughts on this. Well lets just say there isn't many bad ones. Actually only one so lets get it out of the way. I did feel like the relationship between Braden and Beth, however great, was a bit rushed. Not so much the sexy parts, as much as the emotional/possessive parts. I would have liked to see a bit more building in there. That said I LOVED this book. I imagery was amazing! From the surroundings to the way things taste, all of it. Ms.Alvarez paints a great picture. I feel like I understand so SO much more about werewolves and the transformation because of it. For that I thank you!! The ending was a little to "happily after ever," for me, but then again that links back to the rushed romance. Even still I do believe I am gonna have to read this again....lets face it, I just want me some more Braden or maybe even a little Chase. *purrs*

All in all this was a great fast read that I devoured and I hope to see more from this author. Maybe make this series??? hint hint

Her friend didn’t make it, and Beth has not felt safe in any city she has chosen. Having once gone to college with high hopes to be an architect, that is all history after the attack. For the past few months she has been working in Portland at a local coffee shop. She has finally found real girlfriends, and although still on edge, she can take a deep breath and appreciate where she is. But Markko is not happy Beth escaped him, and caused harm to his family. And he is on the hunt.

Braden Edwards who works for his family’s construction firm just also happens to be a rival family of Marrko’s, He meets Beth by chance and there is instant chemistry. It takes Beth a lot to overcome her nervousness and go out on a date with Braden. All goes well until Marrko arrives in town. Not only is Markko hunting Beth, but the bad blood between these two clans leads everyone to be suspicious.

Hunting Human is the debut book by Amanda Alvarez. For the most part, I enjoyed this one. In this world, being a shifter is not the end of the world. Besides Beth not knowing a lot about the lifestyle, when they shift, they are not out for blood. They come across more as big dogs. Now, if you are violent and evil in real life, of course you can use that when shifted for your evil cause. But it is not emphasized in here that just because you are a werewolf, you must live in a pack, or you must live under alpha control. It is a nice change from the strict worlds in other books.

For the first few chapters there is a lot of mystery surrounding the characters, and what exactly happened the night Beth was kidnapped by Markko. Through flashbacks, we slowly learn all of the events of that night. While the prologue (which is a flashback) is very creepy, I think the other ones lose some of that steam. At one point, as Beth and her friend are running from Markko, Beth even makes a joke about needing to go to the gym more. I wanted more terror and biting my nails action, and instead while there is a violent moment, it comes across a bit too easy for me.

I do like this author’s writing style. This story is really easy to get into and flows nicely. Beth and Braden get together pretty quick, which I like – but then doubts and possible treachery come into play which throws their relationship into the dumps. Once in a while Beth felt a little too “woe is me.” I get she has a lot of crap going on in her life, but I wanted her to trust the Edward’s family more.

There are great supporting characters in this book. The entire Edwards family made me smile – and I of course fell in love with Chase – Braden’s brother who is more of the bad boy. I hope he gets a book!

Overall, a nice start to what I hope becomes a series.
