This is probably the most overlooked of all the Anne Calhoun stories so far. On the surface, it's just a short, kinky little tale. This was my first Spice Brief. It was about 52 pages on my Kindle, and honestly? I wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of "story" Anne Calhoun was able to provide in the very short story.

Tess is standoff-ish and proud, but clearly in love with her boyfriend, Drew. Drew is a Navy SEAL and often disappears for periods of time with not so much as a by-your-leave. Drew has been gone for a few weeks when the story opens. Tess is dealing with sweltering weather and an AC that is on the blink. Her house is located in a sketchy neighborhood and Drew has warned her over and over again that sleeping with the windows closed is not a good idea. In fact, despite his very laid back personality, it is the *only* thing he's every really been insistent about telling her that he's going to "spank her until she can't sit down for a week" if he finds those windows open. So when Tess comes upstairs and finds Drew in the shadows of her bedroom, she realizes immediately that Drew is going to back up that threat. What she doesn't count on is how sensual she finds her "punishment."

The story is really a vignette in this couple's life. But we know that they've been dating for about six months and that she's an artist, and he's a soldier. We know that they love each other (although it's first said during this story), and we know that Tess has trust issues. She doesn't want to accept the money Drew left to repair the AC, mostly because she doesn't want to rely on him to take care of her. Drew wants Tess to understand that he's helping her because he loves her, and wants a future with her. And that he is in this for the long haul.

As with Liberating Lacey, the author uses the couple's sexual encounters to build the relationship. Neither interaction is gratuitous in any way. While I can honestly say that I'd really have liked to read more about the couple, I think that this is a high compliment to the author.

Under His Hand is comparable to really delicious appetizer. It's delicious going down and satisfies that need for a quick and satisfying treat.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
This is good for an erotic short story. Most of it is one long sex scene with some interesting conversation interspersed. I liked the subject of Tess’ upbringing which left her with fear and abandonment issues. By spanking her Drew shows that she can trust him not to leave just because she did something to make him unhappy. Drew offers absolution and commitment. I don’t recall that subject being done much in the romance I’ve read, at least in the way the author did it here. So I liked that. It was more than just hot sex. If you’re ok with spanking, I’d say the sex was above average, maybe not the hottest but good.

The characters are very well done. Drew’s emotions, intensities, and physical condition made me feel like I was right there with a real Navy SEAL. It was so much better than just “saying” he was a tough Navy SEAL. This made me think less of other authors who never showed SEALS this way. The author paints him well. She also did some interesting things with Tess’ feelings. I like this author. She is coming out with a longer book (maybe next year?) which I plan to buy.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I'd read and loved Liberating Lacey not too long ago, and it's one of my favorite erotic romances out there because of all the emotion and plot she managed to pack into that book. (If you haven't read it, you should. It's so well done!)

When I read the blurb for Under His Hand, the spanking bit made me a little leery, but to be honest, the author had me at "SEAL". There were a few things that I had trouble coming to grips with in the plot, like Tess'...more

Oh I would have loved this to be full length. The story is complete within the novella, but I was captivated by the characters and the story. I don't qualify as an expert in whether this is BDSM or erotic, so for what it's worth, I call it both. Loved the hero, great heroine. Thought it was great! Short but fun. I liked the hero - maybe I need to read more Marine/Navy SEAL romances, heh. The only thing that nagged me was the scenario. My A/C went out for a week last summer and when it's 95 in the house, if my husband even thought about touching me, I'd have killed him dead. So all the sexytimes while dripping with sweat in a ridiculously hot house was just fantasyland, but I like Anne Calhoun's writing so much that I didn't care.

Bit of a waste of time. I don't think I do very well with stories where I'm catapulted into a situation and all the getting to know each other stuff is woven in later. Or maybe I just didn't buy the whole I'm spanking you so you'll trust me story line. Calhoun is a smooth writer but perhaps her stories are not quite fish and not quite fowl, for me.

Lots of potential with this one, but unfortunately too short for me to fully connect with the characters. I like this author's writing style though, and I'm curious enough to try one of her full-length books.
