This is not a story about a girl who disappears. This is the story of a little girl who comes back. As if from nowhere, she appears one day on a seaside promenade, with a black flower and a horrifying story about where she's been. But telling that story will start a chain reaction of dangerous lies and deadly illusions that will claim many more victims in the years to come...more

Steve Mosby's sixth novel is an intricate thriller, the theme of which is the idea that stories have power – in this case a deadly power.

Neil, a wannabe writer, finds a novel among his recently deceased father's belongings. It's called The Black Flowers, and is about a girl who appears from nowhere, apparently having fled the family farm which holds dark secrets. Is the out-of-print, disturbing novel true? Was the girl a real person, thinly fictionalised? When Neil's pregnant partner is kidnapp...more

I don’t read tons of crime fiction – I'm a dabbler. But Steve Mosby's name has been floating around the part of my mind devoted to the ever-present ‘what book to read next?’ question for some time, partly because of his excellent short stories in both Off The Record & Off The Record 2 - At The Movies - A Charity Anthology, and partly from seeing a recommendation for his book Black Flowers from Ramsey Campbell.

So I was expecting this one to be a bit tasty. I wasn't wrong.

Black Flowers tells...more

Oh, this was nerve-wracking. Gripping from the start. The evilness is surreal and almost beautiful, but horrible. I like it when books and writing play a role in fiction, but it can turn out wrong. In that case, bringing up books creates a barrier that prevents you from forgetting that you are merely a reader, sitting safely in the comfort of your couch with a work of make-belief. Mosby made it convincing and natural. The short draft written by one of teh protagonists creates the right atmospher...more

I wish I could give half stars as I would prefer to rate this one 2 1/2. 2 seems a bit meager but 3 overreaching. Though it starts off quite simplistic and almost cliched, it gathers momentum as the story progresses and generates some genuinely unexpected twists and tense moments. The ending however falls back into the old cliched pattern and some of the shock of the novel's climax is dulled by its over-ambition to be dark and horrifying.

I found the writing style to be jarring at first, swingin...more

Aspiring author and father-to-be Neil Dawson finds himself a bit overwhelmed with the idea of being tied down with a wife and child. It’s not that he doesn’t want them, he’s just not entirely sure how he will manage both them and his job, and still find time to devote to his writing.

To let off a little steam, Neil writes a story about the Goblin King. In Neil’s story, the Goblin King grants a young man his wish… that his girlfriend’s pregnancy conveniently disappear. Neil feels slightly guilty a...more

A very dark, horror-crime thriller. A little girl appears on a seaside promenade and tells an horrific story of where she's been. Neil Dawson's dad commits suicide and in his possessions he finds an old novel "The Black Flower". It appears to tell a similar story but things soon escalate and soon nothing is what it appears to be. A really gripping page-turner. Highly recommended

Mosby's new novel is yet another real pageturner.
The story alternate between different perspectives and characters but they are seamlessly interwoven. You never have the feeling to lose the thread and pace of the narratives, and the collusion of the stories really is built up to a climax.
It is written in graphic details and the tension is perceptible

This book was recommended to me, i'd never heard of Steve Mosby before but i'm very glad i've heard of him now ... this is a great book & a good story with a nice twist ... but the best thing about this author is his turn of phrase, his atmospheric scene setting, his beautiful emotive sentences ... it was a joy to read & i've already ordered his earlier publications and await them with baited breath .....

It's the first crime novel I read and I am glad that I picked it. The description is very graphic, it is as if I am watching a movie instead of reading a book.

A dark and unpredictable story, a must read!

Seldom does a book defeat me as this has done and I was unable to finish it. I will return to it and have another try at a later stage.
My reasons for disliking it were that I felt complete disinterest for the protagonists and the plot.
Jane Fenn
Incredibly compelling story. It starts with a missing girl appearing mysteriously on the sea front. Intricate plot lines intertwine, with fact becoming fiction and fiction fact. Behind it all, a gruesome and disturbing story of horrors.
Jill
At first I was totally lost. I couldn't keep track of the characters and couldn't follow all the stories. However I ended up loving the way the whole murder-mystery came together. It kind of felt like reading an episode of Criminal Minds.
Caroline Barr
Really enjoyed the book a lot of characters with similar names though and it was gruesome it bits

One of the most ludicrous, unbelievable setups for a novel ever. Still, it was good fun.

I thought this was all in all a good read. at times a little confusing with the switching between characters, but there were some good twists and genuine tension at the end. Enjoyed reading it.

A dark crime novel that pulls you in to it's gripping story. I loved it.
Phil
Definitely worth a read, but for me, it tailed off a bit after a gripping start.
David
a very confusing book found it hard to read and never got hooked
