I have just experienced a wonderful and enlightening love story that has moved me deeply. Indeed, Paulo Coelho's "By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept" is a must read for people who have lost, found, or still seeking for love.

I have made some references to this novel in some of my past blogs. But now, I am writing more about it on my personal realizations after experiencing this enigmatic literary work.

I have jotted down some lines from the book that struck me the most, and taken note of my...more

Thank you, Mr Coelho.
At a time when my parents and my son are dying, and can't accept love, help and support, this one paragraph in your Author's Note gave me joy and hope:
"But ultimately there is no good reason for our suffering, for in every love lies the seed of our growth. The more we love, the closer we come to a spiritual experience. Those who are truly enlightened, those whose souls are illuminated by love, have been able to overcome all the inhibitions... They have been joyful — because...more

By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept" tells of Pilar, a frustrated scholar looking for some greater meaning in the endless cycle of her days. When a childhood friend contacts her, she is surprised to learn that her former playmate is now a charismatic spiritual leader, someone revered as a miracle worker. She is even more astonished when he reveals that Pilar has always been his great love. Confused by this sudden opportunity for a new chance at life, Pilar gradually comes to realize that the...more

B E A U T I F U L is the appropriate word to describe this novel. ;)
A Novel of Forgiveness and Self-Discovery -- what else could you possibly wish for? :p

The story could more easily be described as a story of love, as it strives to show that “true love is an act of total surrender”. At a deeper level, Paulo Coelho also gives the message that there are no rules when it comes to love. :D

The novel also shows how "TRUE-TO-LIFE-SITUATION" of love is ridiculously connected to fairy tales (as quoted fr...more

That was actually a very good read. :) I think I'm starting to like Coelho. Hahaha. Sincerely, a Sparks enthusiast. It was a very light-read, and I just felt so at ease while reading it. The beginning parts of the book already caught my interest a lot, and often I was at the edge of my seat waiting for what's gonna happen next in the little love story between the main characters.

I would like to share this very tiny part in the book, that really amused me.

“By the River Piedra I sat down and wept. There is a legend that everything falls into the waters of this river – leaves, insects, the feathers of bird – is transformed into the rocks that make the riverbed. If only I could tear out my heart and hurl it into the current, then my pain and longing would be over, and I could finally forget.”

And so the novel starts out. The most beautiful opening paragraph I’ve ever read in my life. And unless you are heartless or have never been in love, I don’t k...more

This is another book of Coelho which couldn't give me satisfaction as what The Alchemist does. I learn a lot from The Alchemist.

However, it still a nice one.
It gives proof that Coelho has a deep knowledge and skills about diverse religions, although it is clear that that He has more about Christianity. However, it might be hard for those non-Christianity readers when they read this book (this is only a guess).

Above all, I do believe that GOD has feminine face. Why I can say that? Well, we are,...more

Like a certain book collector known to wake up every morning and arrange his books, I woke up and felt that irresistible urge to fiddle with my books: check them, arrange them. It was then that I decided to spend the not so unusual evening by re-reading Coelho's book. I realized as I reached the middle that IT IS AN INTENSE BOOK. Re-reading books are always good, especially those that befuddled you at first read and leave you hanging, forever contemplating the mystery behind the lack of...someth...more

Sweet yet profound, as are all Coelho's works. Short and sweet—Packs a punch. This a journey story. In more ways than one. A journey of the heart, a journey for lost faith, as well as the physical journey through villages, across mountains seeking that eternal something.

This is not my favorite book of the tree that keeps leafing out, as Paulo Coelho expands his visionary ministry into the mysteries of faith, the spirit-world, and the longing of the heart. But it fits in nicely and I'm not sorry...more

A very thought provoking book about exploring the Feminine face of God and how our lives expand when we consider for a minute that 1. it is not only men who are made in the image of God, but 2. as women God also speaks in and through us and grants us access to an incredible wisdom -- if only we would embrace it.

The book focuses on the relationship between Pilar and her childhood friend who is becoming a priest and can perform miracles through his dedication to the Blessed Mother. He is being cal...more

True love is an act of total surrender.

By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept, by Paul Coelho is one of the most beautiful book I’ve ever read. It brought me to tears. It’s a short and sweet love story and yet, very meaningful and full of lessons in life and love as well. I am so deeply moved with the love story. And No, it’s not a typically just another love story about two childhood love interests going back together and pursuing their long-lost love. It’s about what real love is and the diff...more

By the River Piedra, I Sat Down and Wept

The book that I’ve read is “By the River Piedra, I Sat Down and Wept” from the author Paulo Coelho, who is famous with his books fraught with spiritual and religious messages. The reason why I had chosen this book is that it’s the first part of Coelho's trilogy "On the Seventh Day", which I started by reading “The Devil and Miss Prym.”. I was always interested in Coelho’s romance – philosophy – fiction books and I thought continuing...more

Goodreads - Meet your next favourite book. This is a must-read for all the people looking for love and also for the ones who have lost the love of their lives and do not believe in it any more. True Love means Complete Surrender. Letting go of The Other. To Love is to Let Go. Do Not Be a Mountain. So many more life changing truths. His writing style is simple, lucid and easy to understand. It's just another love story. And until you reach the last nineteen pages, it will be just a love story. Bu...more

Beautiful. The last time I read a book by Paolo Coelho, I wasn't actually interested as I was reading it. But this is different. MAybe because it has a touch of romance and faith, though I don't practically agree with some of Paolo Coelho's ideas.

Pilar, a lady (girl/woman --whichever you prefer), had been waiting for a special childhood friend of hers. Her special friend traveled a lot and she was stuck in the place where she's most familiar of --along with its daily routine. They still have bee...more

Demasiado intenso.

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite authors, and The Alchemist is one of the most influential books I have ever read. I always enjoyed sharing it with my AP English students and watching them become mesmerized by his work as well.

So, I really enjoyed this love story; it is a beautiful tale of forgiveness, happiness and love restored.

Two of my favorite passages:
"The Other is the one who taught me what I should be like, but not what I am. The Other believes that it is our obligation to spend our e...more
