Shelves: non-fiction
Not a picture book, this is probably on the level of the Usborne encyclopedias. It gives a good background on the Wampanoag people and their relationship to the current US Thanksgiving holiday. It tells much of the story by talking about the people -- Squanto, Massasoit, Mary Rowlandson, etc.

It has nice timelines and both photos and illustrations. It points out the illnesses that the Europeans brought and how both the illnesses and the fighting affected the Wampanoag.

I have a special interest in Native American studies, so the appeal of this book is fairly obvious. The book includes many forms of illustrations, photos and other visual text. I thought the book was well organized and informative. I was especially pleased to discover that some of the more unsavory acts committed by Europeans were not whitewashed over. The book discusses the taking of Natives as slaves, the decimation of the population by disease brought over by Europeans, and the fact that not ...more
