It appears that we still believe, as Jaroslav Hašek wrote in his Introduction to Book One, that "Great times demand great people." Once again we "can run into a shabby man in the streets . . . who himself has no idea of the significance he actually has in the history of the great new era." The difference is that nowadays it might be the streets of any city anywhere on this ...more

Review of this first part only.

I suspect that the humor in this black satire of life under illogical but dictatorial conditions (both the government and the army) will appeal more to those who have experienced such conditions themselves. Even so, I did find parts of it pretty funny.

My biggest complaint is that Hasek sometimes goes on about an idea or situation too long.

2.5 stars.

This wasn't my sort of book. I'm glad I read it to the end though, because I enjoyed the last few chapters and the afterword more than the rest of the book.

Military discipline and a rigid, top-down command structure instill a bit of anarchy in the soul of every common soldier. His effectiveness, his sanity and possibly his very survival could depend on reserving the right to interpret with a certain degree of flexibility the orders his superiors expect to be followed to the letter. However, the good soldier does essay to achieve the goal the order intended, even if sometimes by means the issuer of the order did not foresee and might not approve.

This book contains some the most hilarious--though somewhat coarse--scenes I’ve ever read, such as vol. 1 ch. 8, describing the attempts of involuntary recruits to the Austro-Hungarian army (during World War I) to escape service by simulating serious injuries and diseases, and the measures taken by the army doctors to counter these ploys.
A note on translations: I happen to have read it in German, in the translation by Grete Reiner, which I think is very good, though I have no knowledge of Czech

A Czech colleague at work leant me the Penguin Modern Classics version in paperback format. I wanted to read on Kindle but I could not find the same translation so got this instead. This is Book One and does not have the illustrations that are in the paperback so I have the Kindle version and the paperback side-by-side.

I was a bit unsure to begin with but I am actually enjoying very much. I have no doubt that some of the parts I am not getting just due to me not being of Czech origin but this ha

I give it only 3 stars, because the whole book sooner or later becomes repetitive, not to say boring. But it's a good read, with a pinch of laugh. Remind me of much better Paragraph 22, because of it's antiwar character.

Nick Klagge
Finished, but I am going to suspend judgment and postpone a full review until I have finished the subsequent books. At the risk of being a bad Czech, I'll say that I'm not very into it so far.

This was hilarious. I really liked this satire of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, especially as Transylvania at that time was just a province of this state, just like Czech lands. Josef Svejk, the main character, is also extremely funny with his innocence and stories he tells all the time. This makes the book very entertaining, despite the bitter taste left after some careful thought on the topics presented. All the human nature problems, like greediness, drunkenness, corruption and others are f ...more

As a boy, I was reading it while in waiting room of a doctor. Some people were looking at me surprised that I'm laughing out loud in such place, but the way Švejk mocks the bureocracy and such things is just flawless.

Beg to report, sir that the Good Soldier Svejk is a humorous tale of the first world war - the first of which I've encountered in my WWI reading for the centenary.

Jaroslav Hašek (April 30, 1883 – January 3, 1923) was a Czech humorist, satirist, writer and anarchist best known for his novel "The Good Soldier Švejk" (Czech: Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války), an unfinished collection of farcical incidents about a soldier in World War I and a satire on the ineptitude of authority figures, which has been translated into sixty languages.
