The Herdmans plus Halloween have always spelled disaster. Every year these six kids -- the worst in the history of Woodrow Wilson School, and possibly even the world -- wreak havoc on the whole town. They steal candy, spray-paint kids, and take anything that's not nailed down.

Now the mayor has had it. He's decided to cancel Halloween. There won't be any Herdmans to contend

The least exciting of the three stories in this collection.

How do you protect the town at Hallowe'en with the Herdmans on the loose? Cancel the trick-or-treating and keep the candy away from a potential blackmail or bartering situation. When the Woodrow Wilson PTA decide to host a Hallowe'en night event, everyone cowers in fear, until they learn the Herdmans won't attend. With the event moving forward, a few strange events occur, though no one has seen that group of six unruly children, so it mu

The Worst Best Halloween Book Ever...

So my son needs to get 24 AR (Accelerated Reading) points this month and I needed a Halloween book to read for my Halloween Book Bingo: "Set on Halloween" square so I thought we could kill two birds with one stone so to speak, by listening to this audio book in the car on the way too & from school. The book has a grade reading level of 5.5 and an interest level for grades 3-5 so since Reece is in 5th grade I thought it might just work.
Well it didn't! And

After creating havoc at Christmas, the Herdmans are back. This time, their previous antics lead the town to cancel Halloween since the holiday has devolved into little more than the Herdman family laying in wait to beat up and steal unsuspecting trick-or-treaters candy.

This sequel to "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a bit of a one-joke story, spread out over the course of a hundred or so pages. The central conflict is the Herdman's have led the town to cancel Halloween, which makes all the k

My class is using this book as a read-aloud and they are loving it and making all kinds of text to text connections with The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

I kept seeing this book at the bookstore and finally decided to pick it up just before Halloween because I wanted to read at least something relating to the holiday.
This book is about a town where there is a very disruptive family called the Herdmans. The whole town is basically done with their bad behavior and the mayor decides to cancel Halloween so that they cant do anything bad. After many pleas from the people he finally decides to make a party for the children at the local school. A number

Last evening I was reading a teacher site I sometimes frequent. There someone asked about this book. Someone else provided a very detailed project packet, which I downloaded. I made plans to run out at lunchtime to get the one copy Cumberland County has. Upon entering school, I thought to check our school library, just in case. Sure enough, we have a copy and no one had checked it out two days before we celebrate.

I have read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. It's a very fine tale. This sequel, wr

Recommends it for: children starting to read chapter books
This book is one of three stories written by Barbara Robinson about a community who is terrorized by a family called The Herdmans.

I had found this book a long time ago and tucked it away in our container of Halloween decorations with a few other Halloween-themed books. I figured that our girls would be old enough to want to read this someday.

This year, we pulled the book out and started reading it. I have to admit, though, that it just didn't seem to engage us. I kept falling asleep as I read

The theme of the book The Worst Holloween Ever is to say that there is always good in somebody. The Herdmans on Halloween have always created a disaster. Every Halloween, the Herdman kids steal candy, spray-paint other kids, and take everything that isn't nailed down. There are six Herdmans and the worst one is the youngest one, And this year the Mayor decides to cancel Halloween, because of the Herdmans. That means there'd be no Herdman trouble to contend with, but that also means no candy, no

I'm reading this one for my class. I am currently working with students who have autism, so we are waiting until the week after Halloween to read this book with the class so that they will have their new experiences for reference. I plan on finishing it this weekend.

Cute story. I like the Herdmans and their take on life. They manage to make the ordinary exciting and interesting!

The Best Halloween Ever skews to the younger side of middle grade, if it can even be considered middle grade. What’s between picture books and middle grade? Whatever that is, The Best Halloween probably ever fits into that category. I chose to read The Best Halloween Ever because I loved the first book in the series, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. (I loved the made-for-television movie even more.) The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was written in 1971, so I assume this book, even though it wasn’t ...more

Have you ever thought about a Halloween with no candy or trick or treating, not even costumes?

The theme of my story is Halloween. It takes place in Woodrow Wilson School. The conflict of my book is person vs person.Well in this story it talks about 6 Herdmans stealing candy and this year ended up to being the same until the Mayor decides to cancel Halloween you might thing that the Herdmans won't be a problem on Halloween which might show as i stated before that would mean no candy trick or treati

Maybe I'm just having a sensitive moment here, but one major aspect of this book really bothered me. The Herdmans within this book are bullies, thieves, and troublemakers that don't pay attention in school and don't read the paper and seem to abuse animals on a regular basis. Fine. Dennis the Menace types. No problem there. But then it's emphasized throughout the book just how poor, white-trashy the Herdmans are by presenting them as this ridiculous stereotype of a poor family. The mother is a s ...more

I think that the best halloween ever is such a funny book becuase the herdmans brothers how they make such trouble with one little situation.Like when they went to the bank they were seeing what would happen if they all got in the door and when they did it they got stuck.Which they had to call the constructor and to tore the door apart and the manager was mad at them and the officer was seeing what to guard so he chose the fish tank.Nobody could of blame him becuase the herdmans always destroy t ...more

I’m happy to report that Robinson shines again with The Best Halloween Pageant Ever. Consider the opening line: “It was the principal’s idea, but it was the Herdman’s fault, according to my mother.” In the very next paragraph, we learn the scandalous facts that the Herdmans piled eight kids into a revolving door and put live guppies on a pizza. Then, horrors upon horrors, we learn that because of the Herdmans there isn’t going to be any Halloween. Who wouldn’t want to keep reading after that int ...more

"The Best Halloween Ever" by Barbara Robinson is book three in the books about the Herdman family and their antics. This Halloween instead of all the kids trick or treating and getting their candy stolen by the Herdman's the school PTA decides to do the party at the school. The Herdman's think they're too cool for the party so all the other students are looking forward to a "Herdman free" Halloween even if their parents will be there too. Then weird things start happening and kids go missing.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've yet to read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever so this is my first exposure to the Herdmans. With having nothing to compare it to, I have to say that I really did enjoy this book.

The Best Halloween Ever is the story about a town that decides to cancel Halloween in hopes to not be terrorized once again by the dreaded Herdmans. Halloween instead will be an awful sanitized candy-free and safe celebration at the school, leaving all to wonder, will the Herdmans show up th

I was excited to see this book on the shelf as a sequel to one of my favorite kids books-(Best Christmas Pageant Ever) involving my favorite holiday
It was a quick read but not a very fulling one. This was written 30 years after the original and it was unclear of what time period it was set. I'm assuming its the same "present day" setting because these children have very few similarities with kids of today.
It was very chaotic and I didn't understand the conclusion. I agree with other reviews sayi

The notorious Herdman kids have stirred up plenty of trouble around town by the time school has started and the adults fear what could happen on Halloween. The mayor cancels Halloween "out of concern for public safety." While it means no worrying about the Herdmans, it also means no trick-or-treating or candy for everyone else. The principal announces an all-school event to celebrate Halloween in a controlled environment. None of the students are thrilled with the sanitized event since they'd ra ...more

The herdmans just make it more interesting. you should read this book if you like short, and easy to read books. This book starts out with the characters blaming anything that ever went wrong on the Herdmans. This book was funny and very interesting to read. At the end of the book the Herdmans filled up the boiler room with candy and gave back to the children and the community.
I found myself liking the book mainly because it was enjoyable to read. I do think this book could be used in the class room as a fun way to teach the children not to put permanent labels of people. The moral of this story is that th

In The Best Halloween Ever, on Halloween night the herdman kids all ways go around causing damage. Setting fires and smoking cigaretts, and even going and stealing the other kids candies. The mayor of the town couldn't handle it any more so he knew he had to do something about it. He decided he had to put an end to it, so he canceled Halloween because of the herdmans. But will this years Halloween be any differnt? or will the herdmans just cause destruction like normal.

I still prefer the Christmas one, but this one was cute, too. You would have to read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in order to have a proper introduction to the characters, but this wasn't too bad.

Imagine everything that could possibly go wrong at a Halloween party taking place in a school......and triple it! The Herdmans have done it again - they, in trying to spoil Halloween, have saved it.

This one I read every year at Halloween just for fun. It's a hilarious book about a bunch of elementary school kids that get in trouble all the time. Their back story is kind of sad actually, but you can't help but laugh at them. This is a read for everyone, young and old, as are all of Barbara Robinson's books.

Very funny, I love her books. I wish we had experienced a Halloween party like they did.

I never heard about the Herdmans before, I was working with a fifth grade teacher and the students did a peer book study on the Christmas book. We laughed so much along at the Herdmans, that I had to add them to my must read books.

This book isn't nearly as good as the Best Christmas Pageant ever but I liked it simply because it was about the characters I loved from that book. I read this aloud to my kids and my 7 & 9 year olds enjoyed it.

I grew up in a southern Ohio river town -- Portsmouth -- and that small town atmosphere has affected most of my writing.
My mother, widowed when I was three years old, taught school for forty-nine years in that same small town, and her major (indeed, only) extravagance was books. I grew up with, and quickly adopted, the notion that reading was the only way to fill up every scrap of loose time you
