You know, I wish Andrea Speed was a crappy writer, because then I wouldn't give a crap about these characters, but this is not the case at all. This is technically the 3rd book in her Infected Series, which started off as an online free story. The first commercially released book Infected: Prey contains the first two "books" of the series. In all of these books we are introduces to a society where the cat virus is spread much like AIDS. There are virus children and people that get infected. Ther...more

Brilliant meticulous torture. Emotionally epic. Ultimate loss.

First of all-
It is imperative you have the background of the first book before boarding this heart-twisting ride. It’s crucial to properly understand the continuation of this series.
Second-
Muster courage, for you will need it.

Having read and adored Prey, I was aware of the emotional demon drop I was surrendering myself to. It was no surprise that there would be grief, heartache and sorrow.
It was a surprise however, how genuine the p...more

I read this book as soon as it came out since I loved the previous book in the series so much. I obviously loved this one as well. However, it is much harder for me to review this book, particularly if I want to avoid spoilers. I had to think about it for a while.

All of the things I said about Infected: Prey remain true for this second volume. The finely-honed world building, smart plotting and great pacing were all here as well. Andrea Speed has done a spectacular job of creating a world in whi...more

I like the mystery, but absolutely love the interactions between Roan and Paris. Sometimes the story spends too much time in the details, which sadly slows down the plot. There is a major spoiler in the next part of my review, so beware.

(view spoiler)[ I was not expecting so much heartbreak when I started this series! You knew Paris would die during the entire book and sadly there was no miracle that saved him. I definitely respect the author for this though, only it breaks my heart. I absolute...more

”You should charge admission into your life. It’s a trip.”

There is no possible way to explain the gut punch this book threw at me. Tears stinging and threatening. Stomach and heart knotted. Trying to hold on. Then all of a sudden, I’m just an all out hand over my mouth, tears streaming down, big 'ole ball of sobs and snot! Cried myself to sleep actually. And….

I would do it all over again!

Andrea Speed’s characters, world, and writing pulled me in with emotion, humor, mystery, and love. A writing...more

I cried. I have cried maybe three times over books in my entire life, but this one made me cry. I read a LOT of angst-filled books, and they never make me cry -- but this one did.

Why?

Well, probably because Speed does such a great job here of presenting emotions with a clear-eyed honesty and directness. It's NOT going to be okay, there ISN'T going to be a miracle, and you just have to get through it. This is the book where the cat virus comes closest in its parallels with HIV/AIDS and the pain th...more

I knew this book would be heartbreaking from the very beginning. After falling in love with Roan and Paris in the first Infected book, I had been debating how quickly I wanted to delve into this one. I decided on the cowardly choice and read a much lighter book instead. But the characters kept calling me and truthfully, I just had to know what happened next.

As expected, the sniffles started from the very first page. Andrea Speed has created such a mesmerizing universe here populated with beings...more

Loved it - best yet in the series from so many perspectives. Tightly written, a mystery I didn't figure out on my own, and a beautiful tragic romance that ripped my heart out with a steady drumbeat from beginning to end. I hesitated to finish this book, but I shouldn't have. The ending was perfect.

The Infected Series is first and foremost about Roan. The world-building is wonderfully done, the mysteries are engaging, but it's Roan who carries each story. He's so wonderfully flawed - hard on the...more

Holy crap! Major props and applause to Andrea Speed for going there. (view spoiler)[Too often in genre fiction, when a major character is threatened by death, they avoid it at the last minute in some clever or exciting way. Life isn't always like that, though, and in fact, in some cases, a last-minute reprieve cheapens all the worry and fear and anticipatory grief that came before. That's the case here; letting Paris live, having the doctor come up with some miracle cure in the eleventh hour or...more

I. Am. Speechless. No, that’s not a particularly eloquent summarization or review, but it’s the truth. I’m afraid any semblance of eloquence bites the dust in the wake of the overwhelming emotions this book has inspired in me.

A comprehensive critique is supposed to contain a short plot summary, but for the love of all that’s holy, don’t give away the ending. Well, what happens, then, when you finish a book and all you want to discuss is the ending? What happens when the ending of the story defin...more

This one is also not technically a romance, but I placed it on my romance shelf just because there's more focus on their relationship in this one. The ending is so sad! I knew I should not have read the end at work at lunch time. Can I blame the puffy eyes on allergies?

Anywho... the beginning was a little slow and I unfortunately didn't remember enough of the first two stories so flipped back to remind myself of a few tidbits that weren't explained in this one. Weren't many, though. And I hate...more

What did I think? It was... was.... great. Solid. NOT a tear jerker, too well written for that, but I cried like it was my own heart breaking.

Book 2 of the Infected series was definitely a 5-star read for me.
Book 1 was really good; this was virtually perfect.
I was in real floods of tears at times, because (view spoiler)[I cared so much for the characters by then and Paris' death was devastating. (hide spoiler)]
I already have the rest of the series, so I'm going straight to book 3 in the certainty it will be good.
Andrea Speed is becoming one of my favourite authors.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? It has everthing a great read should have and more. The world building, characters, and pace are what kept me up into the wee hours reading it just so I could see what happened next. I wasn't disappointed. Of course, being the die hard romantic that I am, well, let's just say that this is one of the very few books I have ever read that has made me cry my eyes out. That scene will stay with me for a very long time. (sniff)
