You know, I wish Andrea Speed was a crappy writer, because then I wouldn't give a crap about these characters, but this is not the case at all. Ther...more You know, I wish Andrea Speed was a crappy writer, because then I wouldn't give a crap about these characters, but this is not the case at all. This is technically the 3rd book in her Infected Series, which started off as an online free story. The first commercially released book Infected: Prey contains the first two "books" of the series. In all of these books we are introduces to a society where the cat virus is spread much like AIDS. There are virus children and people that get infected. There are four strains of cat: Leopard, Panther, Lion and Tiger. Being infected is a death sentence in general. The transformations are painful and difficult on the human body.

Roan, a private detective, is a virus child. His husband, Paris is his assistant, the love of his life, and infected with the most deadly of cat strains, The Tiger strain. In this book they are dealing with the reality of their situation while trying to solve the case of a missing rich girl, brought to them by an old friend.

Read it. Read the whole series. The only thing is that you have to really remember who people are because she doesn't waste a lot of time reiterating things in each book. I have to say I spent some time going back through the last book reminding myself who characters were and what their story was. It makes sense, if you are reading a chapter every week as they were originally released, you'd remember like you do with TV. I think I might make myself a cheat sheet by re-reading the first one so I can remember everyone's backstory. It dosen't take anything away from the writing though.

His husband, Paris, has his health deteriorating. Roan knows that any day now, he might have to let Paris go ... that it'll be inevitable. He feels powerless to stop it -- and it feels so unfair for Roan, that he cannot help the only man he wants to help. That Paris is getting worse while Roan's is getting stronger and able to control his lion.

While the mystery is very, VERY good, I totally enjoy the mystery on the why and the who, I can't shake this dark cloud that seems to shadow the pages. Do you know that feeling, when you know something bad will happen in the end of your book, you know that you must say goodbye to someone you already come to love?

I try as hard as I can to prolong reading this; because sadly, I already know what will happen (though not in details) because I spoil myself with Infected free stories at Andrea Speed's site, prior to the release of book. So I have a melancholy feeling, hanging and gripping my heart. Then, as I get near the end, it's like I'm in a slowly moving car, but steadily going to a train-crash site. Like Roan, I can't deny the ending but I will get there no matter how bad I want it to end differently. It's an emotional read -- but at the same time a very good, real, honest, and raw story about what one person who has a terminally ill life-partner is going through . There is no miracle, no help from God, it's simply a fact of life ...

My heart is breaking when I read how Roan tries some desperate attempt to save Paris. My heart is breaking when I read how Paris making arrangement to ensure that Roan will not regress and turn into his lion when he is gone. My heart is breaking when I read how Paris accept his fate with big heart; he feels that he already lives in a borrowed time (because tiger-strain infected people never live long) and that his life with Roan is something he cherishes.

And well, let me just tell you when I read this line "I'm doing it tomorrow", my waterdam bursts and I am drowning in tears. Never that I find those 4-words sentence to make me feel as hollow as I am right now. When life ends in whimpers, isn't it shattering your heart more than the one with a bang?(less)

A comprehensive critique is supposed to contain a short plot summary, but for the love of all that’s holy, don’t give away the ending. Well, what happens, then, when you finish a book and all you want to discuss is the ending? What happens when the ending of the story defines what it means to be human? What happens when the ending is so all encompassing that it leaves room for nothing more? What happens when the ending is the undiluted manifestation of love, life, commitment, joy, pain, sacrifice, passion, compassion, endurance, and courage? What happens when the ending exemplifies a love story so sublime in its depth and perfection that you want it to go on and on, even though you know there are a finite number of pages? What happens when you want nothing more than to celebrate the power of free will and the sense of empowerment resulting from regaining control of the uncontrollable? You shut your cake hole and deal with it, that’s what.

Roan McKichan and Paris Lehane were introduced in Infected: Prey. The world they inhabit, a world where a virus enables those it infects to morph into cats: lions, cougars, leopards, and the rarest and deadliest strain, tigers, is one in which the police department has a division dedicated to kitty crimes, those crimes perpetuated by and upon infecteds. Roan and Paris, infecteds themselves, are partners in life, as well as partners in their detective agency, working to help solve those crimes.

Infected: Bloodlines continues the precedent set in the previous book, introducing an engrossing mystery that begins with a kidnapping and ends with the murder of a decidedly damaged girl from a wealthy family. Matt Skouris, the scene stealing young man who is still hopelessly infatuated with Roan, has discovered the girl’s disappearance and engages Roan’s services to help solve the puzzle of her vanishing. Though consumed with and distracted by Paris’ declining health, Roan reluctantly takes on the case that finds the two men navigating their way through the twists, turns, and personal dangers involved with solving the riddle.

To the reader who enjoys a complex mystery, Infected: Bloodlines is incredibly satisfying. To the reader who enjoys the allure of urban fantasy, the world is undeniably intriguing. To the reader who enjoys a powerful love story, Paris and Roan’s is simply breathtaking. To the reader who demands an author be true to his or her vision, characters, and the world they inhabit, Andrea Speed delivers in spades with a story steeped in conflict and emotional depth.

Infected: Bloodlines is a first rate tale filled with charismatic characters who inhabit a world where those who are different are feared and treated as outcasts and rejects. Its themes illuminate the basic flaws of human nature—those of blind prejudice and the inclination to condemn those who live outside the boundary of what is considered to be “normal”.

As with all good things, the story must come to an end. And in the words of Paris’ namesake in Romeo & Juliet, “O, I am slain!”

I read this book as soon as it came out since I loved the previous book in the series so much. I obviously loved this one as well. However, it is much harder for me to review this book, particularly if I want to avoid spoilers. I had to think about it for a while.

There is no possible way to explain the gut punch this book threw at me. Tears stinging and threatening. Stomach and heart knotted. Trying to hold on. Then all of a sudden, I’m just an all out hand over my mouth, tears streaming down, big 'ole ball of sobs and snot! Cried myself to sleep actually. And….

I’ve loved the world building and the characters in Andrea Speed’s Infected series, so much so that even though I knew this was going to be a sad book without any hope of a HEA, I still got my box of tissues ready and sat down to read.

Ironically, as...more I’ve loved the world building and the characters in Andrea Speed’s Infected series, so much so that even though I knew this was going to be a sad book without any hope of a HEA, I still got my box of tissues ready and sat down to read.

The book follows on from Infected: Prey. Roan and Paris have just recently been married in Canada and since then Paris’ health has been deteriorating at a fast rate, as each time the virus forces him to change into a tiger, he grows closer to death. Ironically, as Roan notes on several occasions, the circumstances of the previous book has caused Roan to find peace with his inner lion, leading to an increase in Roan’s health and vitality. When Roan is approached by a friend to discover the whereabouts of a missing troubled girl, Roan is torn between his job as a PI and spending as much time with Paris before the inevitable happens.

Infected: Bloodlines is really divided into two areas. The first is the mystery plot surrounding the missing girl. This was a tightly written but fairly insubstantial story and Roan solves the mystery reasonably easily. Having said that, this part of the book allowed us to see how far Roan has come in controlling the lion beneath his skin. It also provided some interesting themes around power, corruption and the lengths people will go to in order to retain that. Alongside the mystery is the ever present continuation of the theme of both the virus and of being gay. Roan encounters a few characters with differing views on their own sexuality, and of being infected and I felt this offered up a well rounded set of views on some of the major themes of the book.

The second area, and perhaps the main focus of this story, is Roan and Paris’ relationship in the face of Paris’ declining health. Those of you who were hoping for a miracle cure or a last minute reprieve for Paris are going to be disappointed. You will cry. I did – so much so that I could barely read the last 10 pages through my tears. However, before that, the main aspect of this part of the story is the comparison between how Roan and Paris are facing up to the future. Paris has made peace with his death and faces it with dignity, more worried about how it will affect Roan than for his own fears. Roan spends much of the book trying to ignore it and push the thoughts of Paris’ death away. As a result, his feelings are internalised, only showing when he knows he is alone or displaying themselves in anger. It was heartbreaking to read, especially as we spend most of the book in Roan’s head, experiencing his absolute love for Paris and his fears and frustrations that he cannot defeat death for him. As a piece of writing exploring the effect of oncoming grief and loss of a partner, this was superbly written and extremely moving. The story ends at what I am hoping is the bleakest point for Roan. I know there are more books in the series and I’m hoping that after this point things will get better.

I did have a few niggles about the story. Firstly, there was something odd going on with the narrative style in places, especially when the narrative moved away from Roan. I think this was because there was an over-reliance on the passive voice in these sections which jarred a little and pulled me out of the story. Secondly, although I didn’t guess the bad guy, the mystery was a little weak and relied quite heavily on supposition and accidental discovery.

These are only small niggles in a story which hooked me from page one and I couldn’t put down until the end. There were other things I liked too, such as the way that Paris was preparing for his death behind Roan’s back, or that the author feeds us in several ideas about secondary characters which will probably be picked up later in the series – or at least I hope they are – which made the plotting in terms of the overall character arc for Roan and the other characters in this series subtle and interesting. I also enjoyed being back in this complex Urban Fantasy world and all the intricacies of living in a world where those with the cat virus are treated with a mixture of fear, disgust and awe.

I know that many of you will be put off by the lack of HEA. I knew before I even started the book that it would not end well, and in a way that was easier for me. It’s certainly made me look forward to reading the next book in the Infected series which I hope will be out soon.

I cried. I have cried maybe three times over books in my entire life, but this one made me cry. I read a LOT of angst-filled books, and they never make me cry -- but this one did.

Why?

Well, probably because Speed does such a great job here of presenting emotions with a clear-eyed honesty and directness. I knew this book would be heartbreaking from the very beginning. After falling in love with Roan and Paris in the first Infected book, I had been debating how quickly I wanted to delve into this one. I decided on the cowardly choice and read a much lighter book instead. But the characters kept calling me and truthfully, I just had to know what happened next.

Loved it - best yet in the series from so many perspectives. Tightly written, a mystery I didn't figure out on my own, and a beautiful tragic romance that ripped my heart out with a steady drumbeat from beginning to end. I hesitated to finish this book, but I shouldn't have. The ending was perfect.

I must start off first and foremost by saying that this was a brilliant world with supremely well-crafted characters, the best closing line I think I've read in years (I mean seriously, that could NOT have been more perfect), and enough emotional punch to leave me in tears. I was literally crying hard enough to make reading the last few pages a challenge.

I also want to applaud Andrea Speed for having the courage to end the book the way she did. When you create such lovable characters, treating...more I must start off first and foremost by saying that this was a brilliant world with supremely well-crafted characters, the best closing line I think I've read in years (I mean seriously, that could NOT have been more perfect), and enough emotional punch to leave me in tears. I was literally crying hard enough to make reading the last few pages a challenge.

I also want to applaud Andrea Speed for having the courage to end the book the way she did. When you create such lovable characters, treating them like she did can get you lynched by your readers. But this ending was truest to the story and served it best. I think a lesser author might have whipped up a miracle to avoid the hard choices.

For me, this would have been 5-star read if not for craft issues, which were fairly significant in some places. As with Infected: Prey, Infected: Bloodlines has some serious flab. Literally not one meaningful thing happens in the first 16% of the book; it was all backstory and setup, clumsily done and not interesting at all. Had I not already been so invested in the characters, that beginning would likely have led me to put the book down and not pick it back up. And of course there were also the paragraph-long physical descriptions of every character to wander onto the page, no matter how minor, that tighter editorial control would have caught and cut. There were also some strange POV shifts, where she'd head-hop into a minor character for one or two paragraphs in the middle of the scene, and then hop back out again; and some fairly stark factual inaccuracies that I felt there were no excuse for in a book about cat shifters (cougars can't roar, and boy how did that throw me out of the story when one of hers did, but I'll concede that probably not too many people know that). It's hard to reconcile all these craft issues in the beginning and middle with the ending, which was sleek and elegant and beautiful; I'm not sure how they came from the same author.

Despite these things, this was a brilliant, affective read. I recommend this series quite highly, and I look forward to seeing Andrea's next work. (I'd especially like to see her publish at a house with a deeper editorial touch; hands-off editorial can be a joyous thing for those eagle-eyed writers who can really cut their own works to the bone, but most of us can't, and need the editorial assist. I think if she had that oversight, her work would be masterful.) I hope she revisits Roan, because after leaving him bleeding and broken at the end of Bloodlines, I'm desperate to see him find some semblance of happiness again.

And now I need to go watch kittens playing, or something, because this book basically punched me in the solar plexus and then killed my dog. Which is an amazing thing, to be moved like that. But it also kinda sucks :-p

Infected: Bloodlines is a first rate tale filled with charismatic characters who inhabit a world where those who are different are feared and treated as outcasts and rejects. Its themes illuminate the basic flaws of human nature — those of blind prejudice and the inclination to condemn those who live outside the boundary of what is considered to be “normal”.

As with all good things, the story must come to an end. And in the words of Paris’ namesake in Romeo & Juliet, “O, I am slain!”

This story has two main parts.
The first being the murder crime solving side.
The second being the relationship (Roan and Paris) side.

This was like two different books for me - one involving the mystery that needed to be solved and the other only about Paris. I confess I had read a couple of spoilers before I started. I confess I had to set my e-reader aside a few times and read something else to settle my heart. I confess to being scared at the outcome that I knew was inevitable. I confess to being just as worried about Roan as I was about Paris, and I confess to tearing up periodically throughout the whole book, even more so in the last 20 pages, and then crying like a baby in the last 5 or 6.

Roan and Paris' relationship is one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever read, even more so when you take into consideration the strength it took for Roan to sit back and let Paris make that final decision, to watch and wait as the love of his life did what had to be done, to hold him in his arms and give him that last ounce of dignity that he truly deserved. The final scene between them broke my heart but it also made me respect the author in a big way. I know that there will be those who question why Paris had to do what he did, and in a small corner of my heart, I'm one of those people, too, but I also understand the reality of what Andrea was trying to maintain in the series and I believe she handled it in the most realistic and respectful way she could. She allowed Paris to keep his dignity and Roan to get his closure in a scene that will be with me for a long time.

I'm not going to talk about the plot or storyline because right now for me it's all about the emotion that I'm still feeling even a few hours after finishing the story. I said before that I understood the reality that Andrea was trying to achieve and I believe she did it spot on My only wish is that reality didn't have to hurt so much.

If you're read Infected Prey, I highly recommend this book, even to those who are scared of the final outcome, as I was. Don't be afraid of a few tears when the love story that's revealed and cherished within the pages is one that is truly unforgettable. (less)

This one is also not technically a romance, but I placed it on my romance shelf just because there's more focus on their relationship in this one. The ending is so sad! I knew I should not have read the end at work at lunch time. Can I blame the puffy eyes on allergies?

Anywho... the beginning was a little slow and I unfortunately didn't remember enough of the first two stories so flipped back to remind myself of a few tidbits that weren't explained in this one. Weren't many, though. And I hate...more

Book 2 of the Infected series was definitely a 5-star read for me.
Book 1 was really good; this was virtually perfect.
I was in real floods of tears at times, because (view spoiler)
I already have the rest of the series, so I'm going straight to book 3 in the certainty it will be good.
Andrea Speed is becoming one of my favourite authors.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? It has everthing a great read should have and more. The world building, characters, and pace are what kept me up into the wee hours reading it just so I could see what happened next. I wasn't disappointed. Of course, being the die hard romantic that I am, well, let's just say that this is one of the very few books I have ever read that has made me cry my eyes out. That scene will stay with me for a very long time. (sniff)
