For the first time, Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor speaks directly to his fans and shares his worldview about life as a sinner. And Taylor knows how to sin. As a small-town hero in the early '90s, he threw himself into a fierce-drinking, drug-abusing, hard-loving, live-for-the moment life. Soon Taylor's music exploded, and he found himself rich, wanted, and...more

“The seven deadly sins are bullshit.”

And so it begins… the book I’ve wanted to read the second I found out about it. And I’m so very happy to say that I wasn’t disappointed, displeased, or dissatisfied in anyway. This book is not; however, for the masses. For starters, this book is not an autobiography of Corey Taylor’s life and is not some in-depth heartfelt retelling of his life of sin. It may be a retelling of his life of sin, but it’s far from heartfelt. It’s honest, straightforward, brutal,...more

I loved this book. While it is autobiographical in the sense that Corey Taylor talks quite a bit about his life, from his childhood up to the present time, it also comes off as a long, detailed essay. He talks a lot about religion—specifically Catholicism—and, of course, the seven deadly sins. He goes through each sin and talks about why he disagrees or agrees with it. His thoughts and the way he expresses them are both highly entertaining and persuasive. An aspect of the book–and his style—that...more

A strong-willed rant against organized religion (not much of an autobiography). It’s tone is a mixture of Chuck Klosterman’s (Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story) easy going story telling and the unnecessary anger of a high school dropout metalhead. It is written with 6th grade bathroom stall humor and somewhat forced college textbook philosophy. The philosophy is one-sided and filled with holes. Taylor makes some valid points about social class and politics,...more

Like everyone else in the reviews, I expected an autobiography and some crazy tour diary of one of the world's best front-men. In a way, this IS an autobiography - not of Corey's life, but of his thoughts. I sure as hell didn't get what I came for and that's okay - I got something different.

There are some great thoughts and quotes in here. Creatively, his writing shines through crazy metaphors and his sense of humor. I like the whole idea of "sins" being an outdated dogma and coming at somethin...more

As a fan of Corey Taylor's musical output I will admit to being surprised that he has chosen to write a book, especially one that does not fit the stereotype of the rock and roll frontman autobiography, i.e. i drank this and then had sex with her for 400 pages. He has for the last decade written an opinion piece in the British Music Publication Rocksound, which although the magazine does not cover my music tastes is an amusing read, which has showcased his sense of humour and his view on a wide...more

Great book, fantastic read! I got stuck in as soon as we got home from the book reading. The book details the 'seven deadly sins' and how Taylor himself perceives them, he also adds snapshots from his own life throughout to show certain things which are perceived as deadly sins but which he uses to prove they are not really deadly but normal traits that normal people do all the time. He almost uses the book to reassure people that the things they feel guilty about such as slothfulness and envy a...more

*Back-dating reviews based on snips I find*

Corey Taylor’s tagline on the cover pretty much sums it up: Settling the argument between born bad and damaged good. This book is going to piss a lot of people off. One, you might not get his humour. Two, you might have the religious standing points that get battered throughout this book. Three, you might just flat out hate his attitude.

Thankfully, I don’t fall into any of these three problems so this was read in a stupendously quick time with a lot of...more

I love this book. And I'm also a faithful church going Christian. The concept that he's preaching is actually quite accurate if you ask me.and there's also some really good advice for someone who may be feeling lost if they find themselves in a similar situation. His stories at hilarious. It's extremely vulgar, that's something you are either cool with or you are, Ian find with it. This is one of my faves, I've read it time and time again.

I picked this up not really being a fan of slipknot however being a big metal fan, and knowing a fair bit about the band I was just curious. half of my problem with this book would be that i was expecting an auto biography so i guess its unfair of me to criticize to harshly because of my own expectations.

Not to be dismissive but if I'm looking for a analytic of the human race and its vices I do not go to rock stars, Corey waxing philosophically throughout this book tended to just annoy me, he co...more

"The way is never shut if the light you seek is bright enough. If you are feeling a little dark, you can always change the bulb. Never let the limits of your understanding dictate how far you can go. We can be better."

Personally, if you had told me that a high school drop out, former addict, and heavy metal rock star had written that I would have laughed at you, but I guess I like to be proven wrong. This book was nothing what I expected, but FANTASTIC none the less. I had imagined that this boo...more

Seriously.. this is my favorite book of this year. Non-fiction at least. Corey Taylor is an effing hilarious genius. His arguments for all the reasons why the seven deadly sins shouldn't be what they are currently are brilliant. And his justifications for what should actually be the real seven deadly sins are rather enlightening. I will not spoil a thing for you as to what he posits they should be. All you need to know is that, while this book is actually informative, biogra...more

To be honest this book is pretty poor,if i was still an angry 18 year old i think i'd probably like it, but there again when i was 18 i hadn't read the Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey which is where the whole premise of this book is lifted from.In the Satanic Bible the idea that the seven deadly sins are merely part of human nature and to be harnessed for your own gain is covered in about ten pages tops, this book drags this out over the entire book interspersed with autobiographical examples of ea...more

First things first, Corey Taylor does not mince his words.

This is not an autobiographical book, although he draws upon his own experiences to dispell the seven deadly sins and it works to great effect in what is more of a conceptual rant. During his stories I thought he was beginning to deviate from the point too much, but then he'd bring it round and tie it all back up in a way that the relevance seems to perfectly click into place.

I may have bias, being a fan of Corey, but I found myself agr...more

I received an advance copy of this for review a few months ago from my editor. Since this guy's band is a magnet for proudly ignorant Midwestern dropouts, I decided to give it a cursory read, just for laughs. It's not that amusing, intentionally or otherwise. I can respect Taylor's candor but his attempt to intellectualize predictable, self-destructive behavior is dull and meandering. He's got nothing innovative or unique to say about being a victim, addict, rock star or malcontent. Were he not...more

Full disclosure: I'm a huge Slipknot/Corey Taylor fan. That might color my opinion, but I did genuinely like this book. It's like nothing I've ever read. I felt like Corey was there reading the thing to me. (Which makes me super excited for the audiobook!) I also felt like I was in the middle of a full blown manic episode. His writing is frantic and hard to keep on point. It's also a little weird. It's actually just what I would expect from the man who wrote Stone Sour's Omega. That being said,...more

I gave this five stars for being entertaining. Although I don't agree with some of the things Taylor wrote about, it held my attention more often than not.

I give this book three stars out of five for content.

(view spoiler)[In general, I agree with his debunking of the "original sins"-- they are out of date, and most are just normal, human experiences we all face. I agree with other reviews that he does get redundant about some topics (ie: his view of fundamentalist Christians) and begins to glo...more

Anyone who has listened to Corey voice his opinions before had a good idea of what we were going to get when we picked up this book. Anyone who read his columns in Rock Sound or was a fan early enough to frequent an old message board years ago when 'GBM' used to post his thoughts knew we were going to get something honest, brutal, funny but something that also made you think things through a little more.
Like he mentions in the book, you don't need a degree to write about something if you have l...more

This book is brutally honest and in your face. If Corey Taylor has something to say, believe me, he says it. This book had me mesmerized from beginning to end. Actually, I read it twice. Even if your not a fan of Slipknot or Stone Sour, this is a very compelling book that you either love or hate, agree or disagree. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is a firm believer in the seven deadly sins, because Corey dissects the so called sins one by one calling bullshit on each of them while adding h...more

This book is interesting to say the least. I love Corey's music and his style, but picking up this book for the first time I was a little taken aback. I am Catholic and this goes against everything I "stand for" but the oddity of that seems that I loved this book so much more. It's an eye opener of how one man sees the things that are pushed onto him and he stands up and yells, "Fuck you" to the world. He tells them what he really thinks, and it all makes sense. He's just a guy who's telling his...more

The new bible that all should be reading. Every argument is backed up with thought and good points. Definitely reading this again in the near future.

I knew this book was not about his music, nor was it an autobiography, per se, but a treatise on the historical "Seven Deadly Sins". Interesting for me after I got through the "rough" language (which I thought was a little over-done), I agreed with his premise that the "sins of old" are not really sins, nor are they "deadly". His thoughts on lust and greed were particularly "spot on" and his New Deadly Sins are true to the mark. Murder and child abuse are much more deadly and horrible as a "sin"...more

Taylor pohtii kuitenkin synt...more

Being a HUGE fan of Corey Taylor I couldn't resist this. It's such a good read, but it didn't feel like I was reading it, it was like.... Remember when you were little and you would sit and listen to someone tell you a story? It was kind of like that. It was like he was talking you, not just putting words on paper. It's funny and sad and enlightening and thought provoking..I found myself either wanting to a healthy debate (or argument) or screaming "yes! That's it! Why haven't I said that out lo...more

Half argument, half autobiographical, this book was ok. Mr. Taylor had a few real gems in there. My favorite quote of the entire book is "Bad things happen when good people pretend that nothing's wrong." It doesn't get more true than that. The books wanders a bit, but he's a very descriptive writer. He says it took him 2 weeks to write this, and I'm not suprised. It is sort of written like he writes his songs. Half autobiographical, half this is what I think about that/response. Honestly, I woul...more

The book genre is autobiography. It's about Corey Taylor life and how he went though the seven deadly sins. How he became the lead singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour. People that like metal and fans of Slipknot and Stone Sour that who I would like it. My reason for my rating is it written good but makes fun of religions. My favorite quote is "If I get angry, a majority of the people will automatically think I am going to kill someone or beat my kids or rape a horse or something else equally insip...more

I thouroughly enjoyed this book. Corey Taylor took a different apporoach to the Seven Deadly Sins, than well, anyone else I have known, or have read. He disputed and cast them all out as rubbish and I for one agree. Society has advanced, religion and definitions of sins have not. Until now no one has had the gall or the audacity to say so. He also offers a new list of sins to take the place of the original seven and I believe that is a list that should be taken into consideration, used, and foll...more

"You cannot place blame on sin for one simple reason: If you blame one, you must blame all. If that is the case, we are all guilty."

"There is no book, there is no script. There is no Godly Guideline."

"You might ask yourself, 'Where the hell is he going with this?'"

Welcome to Seven Deadly Sins, a whole book devoted to Corey Taylor's random ramblings about what he thinks of religion. This book is full of hypocritical and completely ignorant statements, the first two quotes perfect examples of it....more

I noticed one reviewer would recommend this book for satanists. And I would almost have to agree. It comes off in a way that seems like he is attempting to make some of the messed up things he has done in his life ok. It's like he is preaching to his congregation about how all the "sins" they commit are fine. He does seem to draw the line at murder, rape, child abuse and so on. In my opinion it becomes very obvious, Mr. Taylor is an athiest or even perhaps believes in a darker spiritual being. A...more

I don't like people being hypocritical. But everyone does it so it's understandable. What usually gets me is when people are being hypocritical about being hypocritical. They lack the necessary knowledge in order to form a good argument against someone, thus committing the same follies. This is exactly what happens in this book. I don't care who you are, if you are going to write a book criticizing something, anything, know what you are talking about first off. It is the basis of forming a good...more

I LOVED this book! It may have helped that I LOVE Corey Taylor too as I think he is a literate, intelligent and talented individual, but this book was awesome.

There were so many bits in this book that I wanted to highlight, that it is the first book that wasn´t related to study/my job that I actually stuck post-its in or scribbled notes in pencil. I loved it that much. It´s funny, it´s honest, it´s from the heart. It moved me, I related to it, I understood the point he was making and quite ofte...more
