It's been awhile since I have read Barbara Freethy, thanks to free books on my Kindle I am rediscovering her. I enjoyed this book...mystery, romance, family issues.
Barbara Freethy does a good job of introducing a variety of settings in her books. This one had a lot of Chinese art information, life in Chinatown in San Francisco. Yet it's not just boring information, but information woven into the story line. The one warning I have after reading three of her books, she's an excellent writer with an interesting story, but seems to include several unmarried sex scenes in her stories and they are all the same. I think she just changes the names of the character...more
To escape the enemy during WWII, two soldiers and a local Chinese man devise a plan to smuggle ancient artifacts into the U.S. After a mysterious fire, the artifacts are lost and the men part ways. Now, more than 50 years later, the sins of the fathers have come to light and it is up to their 3 grandchildren to make things right.
Another good romantic suspense from Freethy. Lots of family emotion and Chinese lore. Freethy always includes a list of book discussion questions. Similar to K...more

Golden Lies is a well written and well thought through suspense novel that is written around a mysterious ancient Chinese artifact and its significance to both a family who understands its mystical worth and the characters who are interested in its monetary value as an antique. After a couple of interesting chapters where I was given the insight to characters and their surroundings there was a murder. From that point on the story unfolds nicely. Freethy did a nice job giving me a real feel fo...more
By chance I brought this book to the beach, having never read any of Barbara Freethy's novels before and I was wonderfully surprised. She will be on my list of authors to look for in the future. Golden Lies was a page turner, kept my interest and the dialogue between her characters was great. She is a super storyteller. This book involves three families and the how they are brought together. There is history,mystery/suspense,family secrets and romance in this book, what more could you ask fo...more
This was my first book by this author, and I thought it was a good page turner. I mean, it has the usual male character who WILL NEVER LOVE ANY WOMAN EVER ... and that gets a little old period, but the story itself is well thought out and do we ever really think that the man isn't going to fall madly, deeply, truly in love with the imperfect woman? No, of course not. I will admit right from the get-go that I continued to read her because her books were cheap. Yes, that is true.

Three families in San Francisco, one wealthy - the Hathaways, one middle-class McAlister and one Chinese. The grandfathers of the three stole 2 dragons and a box in China during WWII. The grandchildren meet and the dragons are rejoined.
After The Swerve, I wanted something light. I didn't realize this was kind of a mystery/romance combo, so the romance part was super cheesy, but it was still an OK quick fiction read just to recover from the last book.
At the end I was still curious to what happens with some of the characters. I felt like it kind of ended abruptly without any full closure. But otherwise it was interesting reading about the Chinese culture and seeing the story develop for Paige and Riley.
Suspense, mystery, and a glimpse into Chinese culture in San Francisco. Held my interest from beginning to end and the main characters had just the right spark between them to make the book a good choice for a weekend read.
I thought this book started off slow - but I stuck with it and really enjoyed it. I loved the mystery and all the twist and turns. I really enjoyed all the Chinese history and references. That much have taken a ton of research.
Quick, light read with just enough mystery and romance, current day, to get lost in a book for a while.

Barbara's love of writing developed out of a love of reading. Growing up in an all-boy neighborhood, she spent quite a bit of time reading through her mother's large library, many of which were romantic novels. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, she went into Public Relations, but soon discovered that writing was her true passion.
