In the classic nursery rhyme, "Pussycat, Pussycat," the Pussycat travels to London to visit the Queen. But where else does the Pussycat go?
Dan Bar-el's vivid, dreamy text tells the rest of the Pussycat's adventures, from France where he sails down the Seine, to far North where he sees pods of grey whales, and the sands of Egypt where he charts the stars and visits the pyra...more

I confess, I really, really, really hate badly scanning poetry that tries too hard. The book has a cute and what I thought would be an engaging conceit of a pussycat traveling the world with the text based on the question and answer rhyme "pussycat, pussycat, where have you been?". But try as I might, the book lost me from the first page.

I stumbled over the altered text from the familiar rhyme. Why change "to visit the Queen" to "to see the Queen"? Why change "I frightened a little mouse under a...more

I had the good fortune to be on the road with the illustrator of this gorgeous book this spring. We travelled with the BC Book Prize tour on the Peace country leg. This story immediately took my breath away. Rae Mate, the illustrator, calls it the hero's journey and a love story. It struck me that way, too. Pussycat, Pussycat, Where Have You Been? is a finalist for the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award.

Dan Bar-el takes the familiar nursery rhyme about the pussycat and extends it far beyond Buckingham Palace. A girl is entertained by the pet she loves, who re-enacts his travels around the world. The kitty uses rhyme to tell her about the people and animals he encountered in Northern Africa, Europe, and the far north. He doesn't hide his emotion...more

In this version of an old nursery rhyme, Pussycat doesn’t stop with visiting the Queen in London. He travels to many exotic locations and sees many amazing sites.

“Pussycat, Pussycat,
What seas did you course?

The frozen cold water
That lies to the North.

Pussycat, Pussycat,
What did you see?

Pods of gray whales
Swimming so free.”
Polly
Gorgeous illustrations, although I agree the rhyming isn't great.

One of my favorite rhymes as a kid, expanded and made into a picture book.
