An epic story that manages to hold together despite its vast array of subjects. Quality work by the Reeves-Stevens couple, "Federation" is an ambitious book that combines different areas of the Star Trek universe. It has an amazingly wide scope, as it unites different eras of the Federation's history, combining them all together, and creating a tale of epic proportions. I just finished reading what is probably the best Star Trek novel ever written. Federation by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. I read it for the first time a good while a go, I was probably in 8th grade or so. I knew then that it was a book I would probably re-read someday, but since I'd borrowed it from the library, I couldn't exactly keep it. I read a lot of these franchise novels, back in elementary school probably. The franchise tended to be irrelevant; there were lasers and shit, especially shit that got blown up real good. Funny aliens were included. Such books tend to be like madlibs, with a big concept conceived first and details of character, setting and the like penciled in later. Excellent, even if it would be better if a few of the preachy bits were removed.
One of the best time-travel books I've read, in large part because it really didn't involve much time travel!

Curious book.
At first I thought we had four discreet stories with some tie to one another. There was a framing story told at the Guardian of Forever. Then there was a Zefram Cochrane story, a Kirk Enterprise story, and a Picard Enterprise story told in mostly rotating chapters. Most novels like this eventually bring the three stories together. This one is in a different class from the other Star Trek novels I've read. It's much less like a well fan-ficc'd episode of the show and much more like a movie. It's epic in scope and spans three time periods: Shortly after Zefram Cochrane's development of the warp drive, Kirk's time, and Picard's time. While this book took a very long time to read and I absolutely loved it.
The amount of work and thought put into this title really blew me away. It surrounds three pivotal men in the history of the Federation, Zefram Cochrane, James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard. All three of them end up having to work together in order to defeat a common foe.
But really it's the themes of this story that make it make the impression that it does. Honor, duty and love. It is expressed numerous times through the text...more

If you're a Star Trek fan, this is a good read...but beware. It was written in 1994, therefore the events of First Contact and this book contradicts the life of Zephram Cochrane and the first warp drive attempt. The way this book was written was intriguing, with 21st, 22nd and 23rd century events happening concurrently between chapters, but the way the writers wove in episodes from The Original Series and Next Generation was done very well. There's epic, and then there's "epic". The novel's release was enhanced by the end of TNG on TV and the imminent arrival of "Generations" at the multiplex...god, it was a good time to be a Star Trek fan.
But aside from the glow of the times, this is just a smashingly written book in its own right. Some of the facts ended up being sidelined by the arrival of (god help us) "Enterprise" on TV...but in every way, THIS is the superior product. Well done. This is no longer considered Star Trek canon anymore, since First Contact reworks a lot of elements in this story, but it's still a great work of fiction. Federation spans 300 years of future history and two different Star Trek series, weaving together elements from 3 different time periods into a seamless whole that makes sense and is not hokey. Reeves-Stevenses, I expected better of you! 3 stars because the large cast is characterized perfectly. Unfortunately the book is boring and self-important, trying too hard to be Epic. This is Zefram Cochrane's story. He's an icon in his own right with plenty of insight to offer about the development of the Federation. I can't remember exactly when I read it, I know I need to read it again. I'd received a Star Trek novel for Christmas, & it set in motion a voracious appetite for Star Trek books. This tale spans Earth's history from a pre-warp drive civilization, through the Star Fleet era of Kirk, up to Picard's timeline, & well beyond. Both Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens are among the best writers of Star Trek novels, with an uncanny knowledge of the Star Trek universe.

I loved this book! It's the best of Star Trek, TNG, and of course, the beginning. I will admit that my lack of true science knowledge stumped me in 2 or 3 places, but I was able to pick it up quickly. I loved the tie in's of several episodes and my favorite characters. Too bad they weren't able to make this a movie :)
Using the original series episodes "Metamorphosis" and "Journey to Babel" as launching points for three separate stories, the lives of Zefram Cochrane, James T. This book is fun but not true to the history of trek. It's set in between Generations and First Contact (in Picard's timeline). And it goes askew from what happens in First Contact( meeting Cochrane). That was my only sore spot with this book. If you love trek then check it out just let history bend a little.
I will read anything that people leave in the marina lounge. Star Trek novels are better than anything else that seems to get left there, but still not up to my usual standards. Read this if you are a hardcore Star Trek fan, otherwise don't bother.

This was a great book. Loved how even though a VAST amount of time was covered and the story jumped around, it was super easy to follow along and the flow was not interrupted at all. The story easily kept my attention through out the book.
Everything that we hoped "Generations" would be but wasn't.
The first meeting of the classic "Trek" and "Next Gen" is one of the better Trek novels written by someone not named Peter David.

I like the interweaving of the three generations. This story has been a favorite of mine for some time. It's not canon, so if you're confused why Zeframe Cochrane isn't the same guy that Picard and crew met in First Contact, that's why.
The best Star Trek novel ever written. Enough said! Highly recommended, even if you are not a Trekkie but simply love a good sci-fi story about an all to probable vision and future of humanity...
I had I hopes for this book thinking it was going to be a direct crossover but it was more of a parallel story that tracks in both eras that converged slightly. There was no direct interaction.
Good mix between original crew and next gen. crew. Interesting enough story with enough action to keep me involved. Basically a mash-up of the movies Generations and First Contact, but without the Borg, the idyllic paradise, or Whoopi Goldberg. I recommend, but only to trekkers.
Many people list Federation as one of the best Star Trek novels of all time, and I'm hard-pressed to disagree. Epic in scope and rich in characterization and history, Federation was a true pleasure to read. Federation displays an unfortunate occasional tendency among the Star Trek novels to insert blatantly irrelevant references to the Borg in order to capture readers' attention.
The best ST novel ever, so much better than the movie generations. Must read for serious Trek fans. also best villain after khan.
Written before First Contact, this book weaves Zefram Cochran, Classic Trek and TNG very well. Once you get into it, hard to put down.
