SPOILERS

Starting points - they're easy enough to create but it's developing them and turning them into something and then ending them that makes a story. Unless you're creating a lengthy series in which case, say, in the first book of a comic book series you introduce a load of characters and throw in a barnyard full of starting points to be developed later. And that's precisely what you get with "Volume 1: For a Better Future".

Except it's not enough. It's not enou More...

I picked this up on a whim the other day having heard a lot of hype on line. I enjoyed it but I'm left with mixed feelings. The characters are interesting enough though a little generic, some better developed than others, the dialogue is natural though reminiscent of Joss Whedon (not a bad thing mind) and we're thrown right in at the deep end plot wise. This book is all about mystery.

Many (many) concepts are thrown out there with absolutely nothing explained. That intrigues and wor More...

I would like to state that I wasn't gung ho about this series when I picked it up. It sounded too violent and a bit cliche to hold anyone's attention. That's when I read the first ten pages and got bitch-slapped in the face and sucker-punched in the gut. This graphic novel is a fast-paced psychological thriller. Yes it's violent, and yes there's some romance, but it's also got more twists than the first season of Lost. I kept reading it and thinking, "What the what?" Well that's not re More...

Morning Glories has been hailed as a combination between Runaways and Lost, with good reason. It mimics a lot of the strengths of Brian K. Vaughn's series, but it also copies some of the weaknesses. The plot begins with six kids of different backgrounds being thrust into a mysterious academy. They are each given broad strokes of personality, with the potential of being fleshed out as the series goes on. However, the writing sometimes threatens to veer into caricature, and the dialogue is geared More...

I have a passionate and shameless love for this creepy little book, and I can't quite figure out why. I mean, when I started watching Lost a few years ago, I gave up after half of a season because I was so frustrated with a new mystery every week with no resolution - this book does exactly that, and it deserves all of the Lost comparisons that it gets, but somehow it is a beautiful and audacious piece of storytelling that I can't stop reading. The basic story is that a group of gifted but broken More...

I'll just do a quick review of this, because I don't really have any thoughts.

Art
Pretty generic art that's clear, well coloured but rather dull and uninspired. All the girls seem to share the same build, including slightly odd shapes, and the same goes for the boys, although a little bit more variation occurs with them.

Characters
They're nicely distinct in the writing, but the six main characters seem to be rather generic, at least on the male side. As for the More...

Okay. Gathering thoughts. Which is difficult to do when you don't have many. I'm pretty slow so I was quite confused by this book.. So let's see what we have:

Plot: A group of six teenagers begin school at the prestigious Morning Glory Academy. We are led to believe that each of them has certain abilities, apparently unknown to them, and that these are the basis for their selection. Upon arrival, one of the girls calls her parents to assure them of her safe journey, only to discover t More...

Six kids, each with a special talent, recruited to a special prep school, only to discover that there's more going on than expected, and that the school is a Prisoner-like trap.

Really fun stuff, full of anger, cunning, betrayal, and even a bit of friendship. The protagonists are all interesting, the antagonists appropriately mysterious, and the book ends with at least as many questions as it began with.

The art is the only weakness here. It's good, but sometimes difficult to More...

Not my cup of tea. We have six (strangely connected) teenagers entering a shadowy school with a hidden agenda as they encounter all manner of violent and weird people and events. All six are gifted --- supposed in physics, but their actual skill sets appear to encompass all sorts of super-science and general bad-assery. We have twists and turns (including a few I didn't foresee) and a shocking cliffhanger.

But it's all Shocking Twist Theatre without the resonance. The book and sev More...

Morning Glories has been described as Runaways meets Lost, although there's a fair bit of Prisoner influence as well.

Welcome to Morning Glory Academy, one of the most prestigious prep schools in the country. Meet Casey, the strong-willed blonde girl. Meet Zoe, the bitchy Indian girl. Meet Jade, the emo redhead. Meet Hunter, the geeky redhead. Meet Ike, the sociopathic rich boy. Meet Jun, the strong Japanese boy.

They're being watched. They're being observed. And they can't lea More...

Has an interesting premise but the execution is less than ideal. The dialogue sounds fake, character reactions to stressful, shocking or sad situations are completely unnatural and unbelievable.

The art is ok stylistically, but with amateurish execution. For example:

- All main characters are sixteen and Rodin Esquejo (the cover artist) does a great job at depicting them, but Joe Eisma (the interior artist) draws everyone of the same gender with the same body type and face. L More...

I'll definitely check out Volume 2 to see if it's worth digging deeper into this, but so far I'm not convinced. At this point I'm only slightly more intrigued than annoyed with the progression of the story--largely because there doesn't seem to be a clear tone.
That is, the story combines elements of the supernatural with science and some kind of secret-society-style conspiracy where the students of Morning Glory Academy are expected to have some great purpose for which they are being groo More...

I picked this book up because it is nominated for the Eisner award and because a comic store worker recommended it to me.

The story is about a group of six kids who are brought to this school, Morning Glories Academy. Things turn hostile and they begin to question why they are there. There is a question of whether they have powers or not and who's on whose side.

I must first say that I really enjoyed the art. The colors were vibrant and the panels were laid out well for the More...

Delving into the world of comic books and graphic novels, it's hard to know where to start. Oh sure, there are the big names in the field and the superhero dramas that I read growing up. But at some point, I feel like I want to branch out a bit and try something new or different. The question, as always, is where do I start?

My local library offers a wide variety of graphic novels and collected arcs from various comic books. That's a huge help given the sometimes higher entry pri More...

While this graphic novel is reminiscent of The Prisoner, this is so much more strange and surreal that I didn't know what to make of it, as each new page provided twists and surprises. The central characters all arrive at their new boarding school home, only to find out that things are very strange and that they all share the same birthday. Attempts to call home either fail or are met with baffling and even sinister results. Then it gets weird...

Got this on the recommendation of the same cute comic book girl who suggested Cinderella From Fabletown With Love. Unfortunately this one didn't live up to the recommendation like Cinderella did.

It was good, with some very nice twists and turns. But on the whole it didn't really explain all that much of what the story was about and the last section was very confusing and the cliffhanger didn't work for me. It left me wanting the next part in the story, but not in the good way that cliffhangers normally work. It more made me want to read Vol. 2 so I could see if the next volume would make any more sense. It was an interesting story with some really intriguing aspects to it, but it just n More...

Being selected for an exclusive prep school should be an honor; the first few pages of Nick Spencer's Morning Glories shows that the selection of 6 birthdate-sharing kids might be the start of a horrible nightmare. The mysterious experiments, cruel and violent staff, sadistic school nurse, and state-of-the-art security locks in our protagonists, sending them on a roller-coaster of twisted discoveries. Having only heard the initial reviews, I was blown away by the first story arc! Gifted Casey, t More...

I'm not usually a reader of comic books/graphic novels, but this looked intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It gets off to a rather unnerving start, it seemed too rushed to get into things. The action was happening without much of an intro to the characters or why anything was happening, which was rather offputting. Looking back on it after getting to the end, I think that might have been the point.

I saw comparisons made between this and Lost (the TV series) and I can More...

I saw that volume 2 came out and thought I'd check out this series. I didn't really know much about it, but I'm a sucker for creepy stories with kids in school uniforms.

Overall this comic is fricken awesome. It starts out with a group of high school kids that are recruited for a prestigious prep school. They soon find out they all have the same birthday (no this is way better than that John Cusack movie), and that the school is conducting violent experiments on them.

This was a strange one - I felt alternately like too much was going on and yet not enough in this trade edition, and I find myself curious to read the next one, even though I didn't find this satisfying in the least.

The premise is intriguing enough - six bright students with the same birthdate are enrolled into a private boarding school with a nefarious and mysterious agenda. However, it's all flash and violence with no payoff. A lot of curious plot threads are picked up, bombarding More...

I've been hearing about this forever. And I picked up the first set a while back when people were crazy rabid, raving about it, and kept picking up. But without actually delving into it. Tonight I finally cracked the spines and sat through most of it gaping and aghast.

It's completely warped and twisted, and you really have no idea quite what is going on anywhere. But I'm definitely compelled to see where this one is going. I like some of the character highlights we've seen so far -- w More...

First, be aware that Goodreads has the wrong cover for Morning Glories Vol. 1.

Second, looking at the real cover, you might think this is a teen angst, young-punks-in-prep-school tale, but it's not. It's been called LOST with teenagers, but there's much more to it than that. Although like LOST, it throws a lot of questions and weirdness out there without answering much of anything. That's okay, though, since this is the first volume. I'm much more impressed with artist Joe Eisma's an More...

I know a lot of people are gaga over this relatively new series, but honestly, I don't see where all the enthusiasm is coming from. All I could think as I read Nick Spenser's first narrative arc is what Gertrude Stein wrote in EVERYBODY'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY: There is no there there. Also, Eisma's art is generic, unremarkable, and the kind that is pumped out in many other (and similarly thin) comic book series.

Then again, I tend to be more critical than praising, and I'm less willing tha More...

Here is an easy test if you will love Nick Spencer's Morning Glories: Were you, or are now, a fan of the TV show Lost? If yes, then this series will fill that spot missing in that mystery shaped hole in your heart. I told this to my wife who looked at me as if tuna were swimming from my ears. I know we all have misgivings about Lost but we both feel it was a remarkable show that was like an old friend. How could anything take its place? It's been a while since I've read a graphic novel, but this one sounded very mysterious. Also, it was a pretty fast read.

Ok, so the plot is fairly interesting. There is some gore, which freaked me out, but at the same time I enjoyed it. However, most of the time I was confused as to what exactly was going on. All we know is that these 6 kids are special and for this reason the school is trying to torture them into doing something (we're not sure what) but are not killing them. But it i More...
