The Royal Mess is the third novel in Davidson's Alaskan Royal Family series. If you've read and enjoyed the first two, this one will also be a fun read. If you are familiar with the Betsy Vampire books, this story is similar in tone but without the supernatural angle. The story is fun, because it involves the "what if...out of the blue you find out you are royalty. And this really, really hot guy lives to protect you." The story is a fun read that is perfect for the beach or lawn chair. In it, N...more

Yuck! I hated it. I rushed the reading as much as possible to get it over with.

A reviewer for Romantic Times described the book as follows. "crude, quick language" and "Readers will delight in the everybody's-thinking-it style statements made by the characters." I did not enjoy the crude language at all. Two examples follow: Nicole's mother had died of cancer and Nicole took care of her before she died. Christina asked "you took care of her?" Nicole replied "No, I slammed her a__ in a nursing ho...more

This is the last or next to last book in a series, I can't say for sure as I ran into this book by accident. I thought that I had all of MaryJanice's books, but after finding this one, I guess I don't. Nicole's mother has just died and her last request was for Nicole to write to her biological father of that fact. Up to this point Nicole has never known who is was. She write the letter and then the "fun" begins. I really had to laugh on this one and think that Nicole really could really roll wit...more

This is the second book I read by MJ Davidson and it will be my last. I also read "Really Unusual Bad Boys" -- it was a really unusually bad book.

The characters in The Royal Mess were stupid, rude, nasty, over the top. I had no idea how anyone could love anyone. The relationship between Princess Nicole and body guard Jeffrey could have been good, but it was never really developed. All of a sudden they were in love... how? when? and most of all, why???

There was a lot of cursing in the book and al...more

At first the dialog of the family was funny, then it just became annoying. Imagine if the Osbournes became royalty.

So, I kind of love MaryJanice Davidson. I have, somewhat slowly, been getting through her books, and while I’m trying not to do it too fast, I just want to read them so badly, and I usually finish them to quickly. I have not read any in a while, and just got a couple more, so we’ll see how fast those go by.

While I have finished her Mermaid series, and have not been able to find the next Vampire Betsy book, I have been pretty much picking up whichever book of her...more

I won this book through Good-Reads and I really wasn't expecting this. At. All. I was in a rush and I usually end up entering random contests in hope that one day, I would win one book. Well, I did. And it happened to be this one. I legitimately thought this book was about Polar Bears. I am not even kidding, I know that sounds silly but the cover was very deceiving. I thought this book was a generally good book. It was funny and cute and at times I was literally laughing out loud. There were 2 s...more

This is the MJD style I remember fondly. Cute, sweet, ridiculous stories that make me laugh. And make me want to punch someone.

MJD has two character templates: dry, droll, long-suffering figures balanced against loud, outrageous, good-hearted-yet-violent ones. It's a formula that deprives some characters of individuality. But when all you're seeking is endearing popcorn fun, that aspect doesn't really matter.

It also makes it much easier to dive back into a series - whether it's been a few months...more

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed The Royal Treatment, but it was still extremely funny. The dialog was so quotable that even my husband enjoyed parts of it. It was an odd story for me in general as everything seemed to line up too quickly and was wrapped almost too nicely at the end. Of course, it's just a fun beach book/chick lit book, so I'm not complaining too much. It was a lovely way to spend a few hours of my day. ;)

i bought this at Kinokuniya Plaza Senayan few days ago and it was labeled 70% discount. So what's more tempting than big discount on books?

I like the trash talking among the family members, but the truth is it's kinda hard to like this book. I don't know, it's just---I don't think there's an important main story. Too many people, too many conversations. I don't know. Just not my type of book.

A little explicit (warning for those who don't like that). Standard story, spunky characters but a lot of unnecessary language. Brilliant basis for the book: What if Alaska fought free of Russia and became a monarchy...what would that look like. Standard romance aside from the background premise.

The third in a trilogy, some parts of this book were humorous and some weren't; some parts were good and others weren't. Like the first two books of the series, I enjoyed the family dynamics more than the romance portion. And this one isn't about a man obsessed with penguins/animals!

This was a short easy read. It wasn't great but is wasn't bad either just a middle of the road unmemorable book to me anyways =( This is the 1st book I have read by this author and I have several more on my tbr that are part of another series so I hope that it gets better.

I read should have a shelf that says great midless fluff for mass transit and airplanes. THis fits the bill, it was very amusing and original modern romance, includes a fictioanl "royal family" of Alaska that's a hoot! NOw I will go back to read the two prior books.

This was my second (or maybe third) read of this installment in The Alaskan Royals trilogy. And I STILL loved every second of it. What's not to love? Snarky as hell characters, hot men and a couple of steamy sex scenes. I just wish MJD would write more!

Final book in the Alaskan royals trilogy was a fun read. Nothing too deep. Nothing too sad or happy. Just a fun little romance romp in 210 pages (really less if you count all the white space). I enjoyed the other two books in the trilogy (The Royal Treatment and The Royal Pain) but this one was probably my favorite. The characters were fun; not in a “I connected to them” way, but funny characters. The rest of the royal family was a hoot, per usual. I still think my favorite character in the enti...more

The concept of Alaska as a country is interesting and the plot element certainly could make a good book, but it was surprisingly quite boring. Way too much dialogue and a lot of crude language that does not help make a plot. Nothing wrong with a happy sappy book, I guess, but it seriously is way too over the top with everyone being okay with whatever goes on and no one ever seeming to really have any emotions. I know it is probably stereotypical and romance novels maybe can have an actual plot,...more

Another fun read. Even though MaryJanice Davidson says this completes the Alaskan royal family - I hope not. This was a fun read. There are more storys to tell with this wacky family. The characters are more developed and I've grown to love them even more.

I read the other two books in this series years ago, and I didn't realize the third had ever come out. I was happily surprised to find this on the shelf at the library. It does tie up the series. It's a typical MJD book. Not a bad read.

I really hope that MJ picks up this series again. I'd love to see a few more books since there are so many siblings involved. I would even accept them in e-format (and you know how much I dislike that). Please MJ, may we have some more?

This one was okay. Not the best of the Royal series. It had its funny moments, though (mostly King Al this time around). If this is the last of the series, I won't really miss it. I'd like to see more of her Gorgeous series instead.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I was torn between 2 stars and 3 stars...I'd really like to give it 2.5 stars. The story had a cute and quirky concept, but I felt it was poorly delivered. The characters fell flat and were way over the top. I was expecting this book to be funny and a bit crass, but it just fell short of the mark. The concept of Alaska being its own country and run by inappropriate royals sounded like fun...but the execution wasn't there. I understand that this is a part...more

I liked the third (and purportedly final book) in Davidson's Alaskan royalty series. In this alternative reality (where Alaska is a country all its own) King Al finds out that he has another child in the illegitimate Nicole Krenski. Nicole is reluctant to join the royal family but soon finds herself falling for her bodyguard Jeffrey. Davidson's books are always light and fluffy and so short and fast that your gasping for breath by the end of it. Nicole is the usual Davidson heroine--a variation...more

This book was great! Imagine that Alaska never became part of the USA, but became it's own country. And has a very down-to-earth Royal Family. Very funny! MJ Davidson is a great writer. Can't wait to read the other books!
Jenn
A little more brash than I can normally handle, and I'm a pretty brash person myself... But otherwise it's alright. Fairly interesting and different angle. Funny thinking of Alaska as it's own country!

I think both the author and I were losing interest in this set of characters by this book. It was about 100 pages shorter than the other two, which was fine. The plot line was rushed and predictable.
Emily
A cute, fun ending to a trilogy. Obviously Alaska is not a country, or even a monarchy, so a little bit of imagination is needed, but it was fun to read. Not a typical "royal" romance book.
Sarah
Although this book was about Nicole and Jeffrey, I was more interested in Prince Nicky. I was sad to see the Author's Note indicating that this was most likely the last book...

This was a delightfully entertaining read. I enjoyed the premise of an Alaskan Royal family. It was a good laugh for a rainy Monday evening.
