4 stars. Dark subject matter, though it's handled well. Strong likable characters. Likable as characters I mean, not all of of them were "likable." A quick paced story that includes the best parts of suspense, thrillers and action crime novels.

Lucy is wonderful. A strong female character who, for a wonderful change, is not looking for love, battling divorce, though she has the normal frustration and fears as anyone about their relationships when things get tough, and, a mother. She comes across...more

This was an okay crime drama novel...nothing fantastic though. I enjoyed the beginning, but as it progressed I really just found myself wishing it would hurry and end. I liked the first half of the book better; interesting, well-written, suspenseful...but the second half just seemed soap-opera-ish, overdramatic, and unrealistic. :/ ...I mean really, a horde of snakes twice in one day? And a narcissist psychopath who is willing to bomb the hospital?...which doesn't even make sense, because narcis...more

"Snake Skin" by C. J. Lyons was some thriller with mystery, suspense and a lots of action. Now let it be said early this is for the Adult reader and if you love snakes you are right where you need to be. In this novel we find Supervisory Special Agent Lucia Guardino who is part of the FBI's Sexual Assault Enforcement squad that handle crimes against children now...trying...more

I just finished the first book in the Lucy Guardino/FBI Thriller Series by C.J.Lyons. Breathless! It was amazing read and a huge improvement over some of the not so great books I've been reading lately.

Lucy Guardino is a wife, mother, and FBI agent who just happens to have broken the glass ceiling without giving up her morals to do it. I love her character. She struggles with all of the same worries and concerns most working mothers deal with. Her job just happens to involve carrying a gun and...more

I was on the last leg of a 600-mile car trip (with a lot of books on my iPad) when I began reading Snakeskin in early November. Initially, I wasn't sure I would like it and to be perfectly candid, I wouldn't have purchased it based on the title alone—because Snakeskin didn't tell me anything about the book. Plus, I don't read thrillers, because they normally contain too much blood and gore, profanity and/or sex for me. All of the above, though, say more about me than they do about the book itsel...more

Wow. That one word pretty much says it all. With the opening page, C.J. grabbed me by the throat and didn’t let go until the last page. Snake Skin is definitely one of the best suspense novels I’ve read.

Lucy Guardino is a typical soccer mom, except that, as an F.B.I. agent, she carries a gun and hunts down vicious perverts who go after children. In this book, she’s up against one of the worst she’s ever faced. Faced with the threat to her own daughter, Lucy does what is necessary, even if it mea...more

In CJ Lyons’ Snake Skin, we meet Supervisory Special Agent Lucia Guardino who is part of the FBI’s Sexual Assault Enforcement squad that handles crimes against children. Lucy has just transferred to Pittsburg, Pa. - with her husband, Nick, and daughter, Megan – to assume the lead of her new unit. Lucy is an amazingly strong woman. In addition to balancing relationships with her husband and her daughter, she’s leading her squad in the apprehension of child predators. They’ve just wrapped up a cas...more

CJ Lyons writes “thrillers with heart” and loves to involve the reader in the life of the protagonist, how the job affects them and how their family life is affected. In Snakeskin, we see Lucy Guardino who is a FBI agent working against child crime and child abuse.
I spoke to CJ Lyons and she did spend time with the FBI for her research. This is a very hard area to work in. CJ also works in pediatrics so the topic is close to her hea...more

In Brief: Ashley is a disturbed teenager, trying to escape her current life — but she ends up being abducted. Can Lucy Guardino, FBI agent and loving wife and mother, solve the crime in time to save Ashley?

I thought: Within the first 20 pages, I found this book a bit disturbing. (NB: I don’t usually read thriller-type mysteries.) It’s violent, and features kidnapping, vulnerable and abused children, corrupt cops, sexual objectification, and plen...more

Probably a 3.5 would be better, but I enjoyed it well enough to round up.

Snake Skin has a little bit of everything. It's got some humor, some touching scenes, fast paced action, and of course a few more disturbing moments. Though, content wise I don't think anything all that horrible happens; most of it is implied off screen, save for maybe one or two detailed mutilated corpses.

It's strong points are probably the character interactions; everyone from Lucy to her daughter is full of life and char...more

I like this kind of story, but with a plausible story line and characters. The action was plentiful, although a bit overdone, and the characters were on target, except for the superhero traits that seemed to plague the book. I have difficulty believing an FBI agent who is obsessed with her job can have such an easy-going husband whose worst show of emotion is to frown at here when she abandons her own daughter's life and problems thinking another girl's life (not her own daughter's) is more impo...more

Author CJ Lyons shows her command of the craft in Snake Skin, the story of Supervisory Special Agent of the FBI Lucy Guardino heads the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Squad/Crimes Against Children (SAFES/CAC) detail in Pittsburgh. Published by Create Space and released January 19, 2011, Snake Skin shows an artist at her best. The characters are detailed and rooted in reality, the plot tense, gripping and rapidly paced.

Lucia Theresa Guardino was recently promoted and moved her family from Vir...more

Overall it was a good book, not quite a REALLY good book but better than average. The plot was decent but the villain wasn't really believable either because we were not given enough back story early on of the characters or the foundation wasn't laid out by interweaving the dots to connect later in the book. There were a few times when I jumped in and said "oh, it's this character" and I was right, but hoped that I wasn't because it was too obvious but still far fetched.

The "snake" connection w...more

In Lucy Guardino, CJ Lyons has created a woman to admire, but not one you’d want to cross.

Guardino, who heads an FBI sexual assault unit in Pittsburgh, is smart, tough and an innovator. She’s also a mother. wife and daughter who’s a bit concerned she might not be up to doing her job and fulfilling her obligations to her family.

This combination of concerns sets the stage for a gripping story when Lucy and her team are involved in efforts to save a missing teen at the same time Lucy’s young daught...more

I won't spoil the story line here, but I will tell you that this book kept me up all night. The main character, Lucy Guardino, is torn between her work ethic and quest to save the life of a missing (troubled) teen, and her commitment to her own teenage daughter who feels neglected by mom, and her loving husband.

The authour exhibits a sensitivity for the work of the investigators, a compassion for family and an understanding of how children experience neglect and fears of abandonment. CJ Lyons k...more

This book could, and probably will, inspire a fear of snakes in just about any reader, and I like snakes! Like Lucy, however, I found my appreciation of them faltering by the end of this tale. The plot, which seems so straight-forward, twists every which way in this fast-paced read. And the villain sinks his fangs into the reader time and again, as he slips in and out of view within the story. Minor villains rear their heads and rattle their tails just enough to keep you guessing until the big r...more

I chose SNAKE SKIN because I wanted to read a book written by a woman, and with a strong but believable female protangonist. I'm always learning, and as part of that I enjoy trying new authors. And wow, I got what I was looking for with CJ Lyons!

I found the central character, Lucy, and many of the other characters to be nicely three dimensional, with lives that felt real, and yet CJ Lyons has somehow included all that detail without slowing the breakneck pace of the story. Brilliantly crafted, o...more

I was underwhelmed with the characters in this book, particularly the lead hero. Reading her heroic feats over two days was a lot like watching the endless sequels of "Friday the 13th as each closing scene seeing Jason being killed only to return in the next episode.

The plot was okay, but it was all over the map. In 2 days, she solved a case of religious nuts, a case of Canadian perverts, and a kidnapping case. The first 2 cases weren't essential to the story and were more of an aside to the ab...more

I am always a fan of strong female characters - in books, in movies, in life. Lucy Guardino does not disappoint. Like most career women, she struggles to balance family (her psychologist husband and teenage daughter) with the stresses of being the new woman in charge of a new FBI unit. Juggling the political nuances of the "good ole boy" club of alphabet agencies with the drama at home when her daughter takes ill with a mysterious illness, you root for and cheer her along every step of the journ...more

Being a Big fan of C.J. Lyons medical thrillers, I was eager to read one of her books outside of her Angels of Mercy series, plus I received Snake Skin as a free download. :)!

If I had to label Snake Skin in just a few words I would use "dramatic suspense/thriller". As with Ms.Lyons medical thrillers, from the opening pages to the very end, the action is non-stop. I almost get out of breath just reading it. :) So much happens that at times I think, wow, is this over the top -- but no, it seems to...more

First book I've read by this author & won't be my last. Definitely a fastmoving thriller with lots of twists & turns. The lead character, Lucy, is a strong woman who heads up an FBI division that finds & brings home abducted & abused children & sets up stings to bring down the people who spend their lives committing these crimes. Lucy has an amazing husband, Nick, who loves her & a twelve year old daughter, Megan, who Lucy feels guilty about leaving as she strives to put...more

Once again, a CJ Lyons book I could not put down. I read it in one sitting and it was at once terrifying, thrilling, and a look into what is normal in the lives of FBI agents. It is also a look into the life of the girl that FBI Agent Lucy Guardino is trying to find and of the choice she faces when confronting the man who has kidnapped the girl.

There are scenes featuring snakes that are not recommended for those who may have issues with snakes (even reading about them), they fit the story and gi...more

Even though I love chick lit and all things girly, I am also a fan of mysteries and thrillers. When I reviewed my first book from CJ Lyons, Blind Faith, I was blown away by the creative story lines, the intense drama, and breathtaking speed at which I flew the story. When CJ approached me and offered to send me a copy of Snake Skin, of course I said yes!

Snake Skin follows Lucy Guardino, or Supervisory Special Agent Guardino when she is on the job. Lucy is an average mom, in love with her husban...more

Not my usual pick or genre. I guess I was hooked into buying this book after seeing it in a couple of 'Best Books' lists. Also, it takes place in Pittsburgh. I must say it kept me in the edge of my seat. Very unsettling and disturbing subject though; FBI team dealing with Sexual Assault, trafficking and pedophiles; and an unlikely heroin, Lucy Guardino, a likable super mom, super agent and at times, super human character. I don't think I will indulge into any other of C.J. Lyons stories. Althoug...more

Lucy Guardino is a supervisor for the FBI in the SAFE unit. She loves her husband and daughter but loves her job more. In 2 days it seems like, she stops a church from buying a child after they throw her into a snake pit. Then another girl goes missing. Her daughter becomes ill and ends up in the hospital. After escaping a house being blown up and having metal penetrate her back, she still manages to go back to work. Then the person who took the girl holds her at gun point, twice, before she man...more

This book appears to be a fusion of adult and young adult fiction. It begins strongly and credibly, then lapses into the improbable. The leading character is capable of intuitive leaps that defy logic, while simultaneously behaving in such a careless manner that the safety of others is jeopardized. The ending is a bit sappy. There are a few editing errors. This writer obviously has talent. With better editing and some critical advice from her reviewers, she could be topnotch. A little more matur...more

When I initially started reading this book, I didn't think I was going to like it. But as I began to get deeper into the book, I became more engrossed in the book, finally finding myself reading it at the expense of everything else I had to do. The book turned out to be a really, good read, with unusual twists and turns that kept the reader's attention. Since this was my first read for this author, I have definitely put her on my list of authors to keep reading. I would definitely recommend the...more

At first I didn't think I would like the book, but it held me captive till the very end. The identity of perpetrator was difficult to figure out, it wasn't who I thought it was.
The only thing that in my opinion I would of like to read more of, was the interact between Lucy, her husband Nick and daughter Megan.
Over all if you want something to read that keeps you on the edge and keeps you hooked to the very last page this book is a must read.
I will diffently be reading more of C J lyons books.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the main character, Lucy, and her struggle with the pressures of work and home. I thought that she was made out to be a bit superhuman, given the amount of injuries she sustains, and how she heads right back to work. The bad guy was creepy, and I didn't figure him out before the reveal. Looking back, I could see the foreshadowing in his scenes, but during my first read through I didn't pick up on it. I look forward to reading the next book in the serie...more
