A Bride's Portrait of Dodge City, Kansas
By Erica Vetsch
This interesting book might take place in Dodge—but it’s not “Gunsmoke.”
The setting is not the Long Branch Saloon, with its “attached” brothel. Much of this book takes place in a photography studio, the sheriff’s office, the mercantile, and the Wild West’s streets.
The leading man does carry guns on his hips, and he’s a deputy working for the legendary Bat Masterson. Of course, the leading lady is the photographer.

Very enjoyable; reviewing coming soon.Addie Reid has worked with her Uncle Carl in his photography business since her parents died during the Civil War. She moved with him from Abilene to Dodge to open a new studio. Addie herself has considerable skill and talent as a photographer, which her uncle has encouraged. Here in Dodge, she's made a new friend, Fran Seaton, and things are looking good.
Until Carl dies of a heart attack not long after they open their new studio.

Most romance novels are predictable, so what makes one good is a combination of great characters and unique circumstances (whether it be action, setting, etc). The characters and the heroine’s unique profession for the time make this book an enjoyable read. Adeline came to Dodge City with her uncle to escape her past. When he dies, she’s left to run the photography studio alone. However, her past comes back to haunt her when a shopkeeper is murdered and her shop is vandalized. Will she finally b...more
A Bride's Portrait of Dodge City, Kansas by Erica Vetsch is delightful—doubly delightful in fact. Not only does the reader enjoy the tale of spunky photographer Adeline Reid and hunky deputy Miles Carr, but that of a second deputy and his shopkeeper's assistant sweetheart as well. Vetsch has crafted engaging characters I liked from the start. Addie's strength is admirable, but its her sheltered heart that drew me in. Miles is bold on the job, but he harbors doubts about his new-found faith that...more
Erica Vetsch wove a masterful story set in the booming cowtown of Dodge City during it's developing years when Bat Masterson ran the county with a silver-tipped cane and a lightning-fast draw. Twists and turns abound in the story, offering not one but two potential romances, each with multiple suitors. The multiples continue with a plethora of antagonists. Some of them, oily characters that make you want to cringe and curl your upper lip, provide minor annoyances. Others, including complete surp...more
Addie and Miles are lovable main characters, and their goodness flies in the face of Dodge City's drinking, gambling, whoring, sinning cowboys. Their struggle with Vin Rutter, a member of the notorious Cliff Walker gang, helps build their relationship and provides a mystery for the novel to solve. Spoiler alert: I guessed that the missing money was hidden in the pillar about halfway through. Most of the story lines are resolved to my satisfaction, although Hap did not make a believable madman. Liked the story, and being a Kansas native, I was excited to read something set in my home state. However, I felt that the descriptions of 1880s Dodge City were a trifle vague, and while some aspects (the cowboys, law, etc.) were pretty good, other areas like what buildings looked like, or the wilderness outside of town were sadly neglected.
The love stories between Miles & Addie and Lucas & Fran were well told, and I was pleased that there was more than just a romance going on, since so...more

If you like a good western, well then grab your Stetson and run down to the nearest book store and pick up A Bride's Portrait of Dodge City, Kansas!
Ms. Vetsch skillfully paints each character in such a way that you can almost see them before your very eyes. Every character was unique and had their own kind of charm. It's not often that I find a book with such good character development of such a vast array of the characters. My favorite character was Miles Carr, I couldn't help but relate to hi...more

Nothing brings Addie Reid more pleasure than standing behind her Chevalier and capturing the potential of a person, and no place proves to be a more opportune locale for her portrait studio than Dodge City, Kansas--Queen of the Cattle Towns. When a dangerous acquaintance from her past steps into Dodge City, everything she has worked to build--and conceal--is threatened.

A fun read! Addie's got ninety days to pay off the mortgage on her portrait studio or she'll lose everything. She doesn't have time to fall in love with the handsome deputy Bat Masterson just hired. But she does need his help getting her home safely through the masses of rowdy cowboys.
Erica Vetsch does an excellent job interweaving the hero and heroine's secrets, including a secret that endanger's Addie's friend's life. I loved learning about early photography - an interesting combination of ar...more

This was my first book by Erica Vetsch and though I don't read a lot of historicals I found this book to be a delightful and snappy read. Addie was a sweet and quiet heroine desperate to make a fresh start in a new city. I couldn't help but empathize and cheer for her as she fought for her independence in a rough cowboy town. The balance of history was woven beautifully through multiple story lines and drew me in for a few delicious hours of romance and suspense in Dodge City, Kansas. Can't wait...more

Cute story, and well written. The opening was my favorite scene, definately one of the best I've read in a while. The murder mystery was interesting but uncomplicated, and I wished I could have experienced more of the 19th century Kansas setting. The author did a superb job on the details of Addie's profession as a photographer, and I felt like I was taking pictures right along with her. If you like murder mysterys, photography, and western settings, this may be a fun read, sure to put a smile o...more

4.5 stars
This was my first book by author, Erica Vetsch and I was pleasantly surprised. Originally I had expected a bit of a romantic, historical fiction with a slight Christian themed undertone; which is correct, however, I was not expecting the mystery aspect of this novel.
Taking place in 1878; Vetsch sets the stage in Dodge City, Kansas. Imagine if you will, an old western movie complete with cowboys, stage coaches, saloons, fancy dresses and a single, well-stocked m...more

What do you get when you have a talented female photographer, a newly-minted town deputy, and a scoundrel of the worst sort who has come back to haunt you? You get this book--A Bride's Portrait of Dodge City, Kansas--and it's a good'un, too.

I have a fine rule that I play in my book reviews: don’t mention the author. It’s just my personal choice when it comes to writing these things.
I’m breakin’ that rule, because…I really, really love Erica Vetsch’s writing!
From the first story I read, I feel in love with the style and voice of Vetsch and boy did I adore this latest title. The character arc, the setting, the action…it ALL seamlessly came together for a really riveting plot. I stood out in the cold, while our family roofed our hay...more

Even though Erica Vetsch has set aside her career teaching history to high school students in order to homeschool her own children, but her love of history hasn't faded. Erica's favorite books are historical novels and history books, and one of her greatest thrills is stumbling across some obscure historical factoid that makes her imagination leap.
