Can't remember if I read this back in college, in a History of Theatre class or not, but I was surprised as I read this for a class now because I thought it'd be about an IMAGINARY Invalid (a la Harvey) or an Imaginary INVALID (a la people who fake a limp to get handicap parking). I much prefer the other translated title of Hypochondriac, as that's what it's really about...

The plot feels very classical--confused identities, lying servants, etc. I can't imagine how the quick changes Toinette has

This final play by Molière isn't as hilarious as his best plays but was still pretty fun. Molière was ill while writing this so choosing to satirize doctors and apothecaries makes sense and explains the bitter edge to some of the speeches.

My edition, from Project Gutenberg, was a prose translation by Charles Heron Wall. I didn't have any complaints about this translation but I missed the rhyming couplets in Richard Wilbur's translations of several other Molière plays. Also, the text of this ebo

I can scarcely believe that, as an undergraduate College student at Bradley University, I read this in the opriginal French, with comments that I made (sometimes in French, and sometimes in English) in the margins, as I explained what specific words might mean or what concepts might be relevant. This is a comedy, focusing on a hypochondriac, Argan. Making the original play more intriguing, the well known composer Marc-Antoine Chapentier provided music (or at least that's what my handwritten note ...more

Très drôle. Hilarant ! Superbe ! Un grand classique vite lu !

"Argan: Tu m'as laissé…
Toinette : Ah !
Argan : Tu m'as fait égosiller, carogne !
Argan: Quoi ! coquine…
Toinette: Si vous querellez, je pleurerai.

Le Malade Imaginaire by Moliere
From a Positive Psychology Perspective, checking the list of Jacob Socol

The Imaginary Invalid is a famous comedy to which I listened again this morning, trying to see what the positive message might be.
At first glance, apart from the laughter, there couldn’t be much to learn from a man who sees himself as sick, all the time. And yet, there are some possible Optimistic conclusions.
Argan derives pleasure from finding new signs of…disease.

Hilarious !

The play of Molière criticizes the doctors and pharmacists practices in the time of Molière where they used to diagnose, mostly, rich people with diseases they are not infected with in order to make fortune.

Molière discussed in his play, love and greed in a sense of humor.

I strongly recommend this play for all those studying or working in the medical field.

Y me hizo reír a carcajadas.

This was a nice read and still stikes a cord even with today's advances in medicine. Molière must have really hated doctors towards the end of his life if he used his name directly in the play on the side opposed to the profestion.

This play is seriously funny. It’s a comédie ballet with lots of singing and dancing in between, which was much liked at Molière’s time, especially by the nobility and Louis XIV. Le Malade Imaginaire is the first Moliére I have read and it was his last play. He died on stage, Playing Argan, the protagonist in this story, in the 4. recital in 1673.

Molière was born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in January 1622 in Paris. His father signed him up for law school, which he mastered with excellence but his he

(Note: Goodreads has the translator listed as author. The author is Molière.) This play cracks me up and is a perfect text to teach genre with a nice dose of theatre history. The scene that never fails to kill me is when Cléante pretends to be the music teacher and he and Angelique improvise a duet "Fair Phyllis, this silence is killing me," etc. It's too funny!!!!!! I'm quite fond of the Sorrell translation and am glad it's the text used in the class I teach.

This particular translation is not worth much as the translator simply tosses his/her hands up at the last major scene and declares it utterly untranslateable being a mixture of pig latin and french. I imagine it is if one is translating without creativity, but it is the job of the creator to read and understand the intention of the author and, if necessary, rewrite the entire scene preserving the essence of and intention of the author. The three stars are not for Moliere nor his work - within w ...more

Definitely my favorite of Moliere's works. As a bit of a hypochondriac myself, I can certainly relate to some of the hilarious situations in this play. Just as funny now as it would have been in Moliere's day.
