Kathryn Lively takes us on a quite a journey with Lerxst Johnson. This book is a semi-indulgent trek through a seemingly odd set of circumstances. We aren't talking your average stuffy gumshoe here. The character is a rocker by night, guitar instructor by day. He tends to attract interesting people and to say he has a bit of girl trouble is the understatement of the century. I read this one from beginning to end! The story started off with the simple question of "Why was the mysterious woman was trying to kill him?" to a bigger plot that no one saw coming until it sprang up! The story was engaging and you couldn't help but love Lerxst and the characters he meets along the way.

This book is full of rock music and pop culture references as you follow Rush/Grateful Dead tribute band guitarist/music teacher by day Lerxst as he follows the bread crumbs to figure out why anyone would want him dead. A good chunk of the music references are related to Rush ("Thank Ged"...love that!), with a heaping dose of the Grateful Dead and the Beatles thrown in for good measure. Matt "Lerxst" Johnston has woman trouble. I'm reminded of the song "Take it Easy" by Jackson Brown, only for Lerxst it's three....one that wants to kills him, one that wants to seduce him, and one...well, I'll leave that to the author to tell you about.

Matt "Lerxst" Johnston teaches guitar lessons by day and rocks out on stage with his Rush/Grateful Dead cover band, Dead Barchetta, by night. A trite as it may sound, I found myself not able to put this one down. Lively has a gift for mixing suspense with the truly unexpected, often with darkly humorous results. You never quite know what the next page is bringing, but odds are that it will only add to the delightful mix of calamity and hilarity that surrounds our boy Lerxst. I so want to read this book. As a huge fan of the band Rush, I love it already for the title.
I want more from Ms. Lively and I want more "Lerxst"!!!
This book has all the good stuff, especially if you're a music fan! It's suspenseful, funny in parts, and poignant in others. I don't think I've read a story quite like this in a long time. It's a great fast-paced read!
