Music tutor by day and tribute band guitarist by night, Matt “Lerxst” Johnston doesn’t have an enemy in the world…so he thinks. One night a pretty young woman tries to smother him in his sleep, and it’s not for the usual reasons a woman would have for wanting to inflict harm upon him! The dream he enjoyed at the time quickly spirals into ...more

4 1/2 stars
Right in the middle of a kick ass rock and roll dream in which he is the star, Matt Johnston awakens to someone trying to smother him with a pillow. Knocking his assailant away from him, he discovers it’s a small framed girl who has a huge grudge against him. Years ago a person with his name wrote a nasty letter to the producers of a series that had just begun which was going to give her father his big break as an actor. The series was cancelled and her father eventually co...more

Kathryn Lively takes us on a quite a journey with Lerxst Johnson. This book is a semi-indulgent trek through a seemingly odd set of circumstances. We aren't talking your average stuffy gumshoe here. The character is a rocker by night, guitar instructor by day. He tends to attract interesting people and to say he has a bit of girl trouble is the understatement of the century. There is a great buildup throughout, to a spine-tingling conclusion. There is lush character development which is so...more

What would you do if you woke up to a pillow over your face with someone attempting to smother the life out of you? Matt "Lerxst" Johnston winds up talking down the would be murderer who reveals a tale of mistaken identity and craziness that follows a twisting path from Virginia Beach to New York and back.

This book is full of rock music and pop culture references as you follow Rush/Grateful Dead tribute band guitarist/music teacher by day Lerxst as he follows the bread crum...more

I read this one from beginning to end! The story started off with the simple question of "Why was the mysterious woman was trying to kill him?" to a bigger plot that no one saw coming until it sprang up! The story was engaging and you couldn't help but love Lerxst and the characters he meets along the way.

It had plenty of musical references and a great deal of dark humor but the book didn't bogged down at any point. Instead, it moved at a quick pace and had you looking f...more

This book is full of rock music and pop culture references as you follow Rush/Grateful Dead tribute band guitarist/music teacher by day Lerxst as he follows the bread crumbs to figure out why anyone would want him dead. A good chunk of the music references are related to Rush ("Thank Ged"...love that!), with a heaping dose of the Grateful Dead and the Beatles thrown in for good measure. With the addition of Facebook, Twitter, and the threat of GPS tracking from your cell phone, this bo...more

Dead Barchetta is a mystery novel. More than that, its hero is not a gumshoe, but a music tutor by day and tribute band guitarist by night. Matt “Lerxst” Johnston doesn’t have an enemy in the world…so he thinks. And as for women, what rocker doesn’t have them wanting him? Except for one young woman, who tries to kill him by smothering him while he is sleeping in his bed. With mistaken identities (another Matt Johnson in Virginia Beach is found murdered), fear of his grandmother’s special “herb” ...more

Matt "Lerxst" Johnston has woman trouble. I'm reminded of the song "Take it Easy" by Jackson Brown, only for Lerxst it's three....one that wants to kills him, one that wants to seduce him, and one...well, I'll leave that to the author to tell you about.

The story started out a bit slow for me and Lerxst made a couple of bone-headed decisions that made me shake my head; however, the characterization was rich and I was invested in Lerxst's journey, so I had to see wher...more

Matt "Lerxst" Johnston teaches guitar lessons by day and rocks out on stage with his Rush/Grateful Dead cover band, Dead Barchetta, by night. He often finds himself passed out on his couch, but one night he wakes up feeling like he's suffocating. Indeed, some strange girl is trying to smother him. Once he gets her to back off, she tells him it was a case of mistaken identity. So he spends a while getting to know her. But soon, he discovers her story isn't quite right, and finds himself...more

A trite as it may sound, I found myself not able to put this one down. Lively has a gift for mixing suspense with the truly unexpected, often with darkly humorous results. You never quite know what the next page is bringing, but odds are that it will only add to the delightful mix of calamity and hilarity that surrounds our boy Lerxst. Being a quick and engaging read, I don't want to reveal too much in this review, but if seemingly odd bedfellows such as fake limbs and bombs sound intriguing,...more

Rock Deadly is available for now in Kindle format, but the Dead Barchetta version is still in paperback. There's no need to buy Rock Deadly if you already have DB.

Thanks!

This book has all the good stuff, especially if you're a music fan! It's suspenseful, funny in parts, and poignant in others. I don't think I've read a story quite like this in a long time. It's a great fast-paced read!
