There are a lot of books out there about getting started in homesteading in urban environments now, and the truth is, I don't think you can have too many because a lot of them offer different approaches and information.
This book is great for beginners. It's easy to get overwhelmed when you're first getting interested in trying to grow more produce for your dinner table or when you're considering taking the next step in homesteading.Renee writes in an easy and clear way. It's so easy to read that...more

Sixth generation gardener and homesteader, Renee Wilkinson shares generations of knowledge in thie easy to read book. Books on city homesteading are a bit harder to find than the full farming types of books, and Renee solves that problem by designing her own helpful resource.
Even if you are nestled deep in the heart of a city there are basic things you can grow and raise for a healthier lifestyle.

general overview: finding space to make your homestead, gardening, livestock (chickens, ducks, goats, bees), preserving the harvest.
My favorite part was in the intro of this book. Renee Wilkinson can trace her family's ancestry back to pioneers on the Oregon Trail. She discusses how those original pioneering families were mostly city-dwellers without knowledge of food-production or livestock. Many of them only had small pamphlets of information a...more

From composing to bee keeping to raising ducks and chickens to the smallest of gardens this beautifully organized and photographed book is a delight to the home gardener who loves to read as well as garden. Showing pictures of real gardens in tubs, pots and even a bed of sideways cinderblocks is an inspiration to even the most space-bound and reluctant gardener. I learned a lot from this gardening book, and even more important to me, I love the process of reviewing and using some of the informat...more
A good springboard with basic information on many topics. I would have liked more specifics, but this book was a good starting point. Now I have to find the specific books on the topics I want to know more about.
This book has some great tips, although it can get a little repetitive at times. The photos in this book are lovely and illustrative. The recipes are awesome.
Overall a good book to start with if you are interested in gardening and homesteading.

This is a good, solid book about urban/suburbia homesteading. There were color pictures and a few extra tidbits not included in the other books I've read (for example, a whole section on duck raising.) However, I didn't appreciate the author's voice as much as some of the others I've come across. Nor could I shake the feeling that despite my desire to raise chickens and keep bees, I just wasn't 'hip' enough for Renee Wilkinson.
