The Plot - Callum is a teenager with some freaky gift. He can see ghosts. So far so cliché, right? Ok, but this is the least of his problems cose there’s a monster that is after him and all of those who are just like him. It’s called The Hunter and it kills it’s victims in a bloody way ripping their eyes off their sockets. Why? Well, that’s something to discover by reading the book. *evil laugh*

1.What is the author's purpose in writing the book?
Adam Slater presented an interesting idea involving mythology as well as the supernatural with “The Shadowing." He wanted to attract the younger population with this book. The author does something that has been lacking in Young Adult fiction lately – he brings in supernatural creatures that aren’t “mainstream”. You won’t find vampires or werewolves here! Instead we’re talking Grims, Chime Children, and the Bo...more

♥… ❤ …...more
I began reading this with a bit of fear and trepidation. It has "horror" in its labelling, so I was a little afraid it would be too graphic. While there is a graphic murder, it isn't gratuitously violent. Slater wrote a book that I couldn't wait to get home from work to read, staying up into the wee hours to read.
This story, written in third person, is almost exclusively from the point of view of Callum Scott - a teenager who has had the ability to see ghosts all his life. However, there is a d...more

There are creepy stories that make your skin crawl and then there are some that give lots of hype and promise but somehow manage to fall short. I can promise you “The Shadowing: Hunted” by Adam Slater will not disappoint.

A decent, though rather pedestrian read in the popular YA supernatural genre.
Cal is the quiet type who lives with his grandmother in a tiny house in a poor village in Britain. He can also see ghosts although apparently can't interact with them and has kept this ability to himself. Now the time of The shadowing is upon them and soon the walls between our world and that of the demons will start to thin. Cal is clearly going to be on the front lines in the upcoming war.

I am not usually a fan of horror at all. This is more of the creepy sort of book rather than a really gory sort of book. Callum is 14 and lives in a small town in England with his grandmother. He has always been able to see ghosts around him. But now things seem to be changing. He is starting to see what will happen in the future. And one of the things that is happening is that teens are being murdered. And he is seeing the murders in his dreams before they happen. The ghosts are also behaving s...more

I chose to read this book on impulse, because I liked the blurb but one of the two available covers scared the lights out of me (the gory, not-portrayed-on-this-blog one, if you’re terribly curious).
I can’t stress it enough, how glad I am that I were so visceral... because this is one great visceral book.
Nowadays I find that many authors seeking to thrill, to scare their readers, will resort to gore as a means to shock, as if that was supposed to be the terrifying thing. Mr Slater does not do su...more

Fourteen-year-old Callum sees ghosts everywhere. He also experiences premonitions and has a strange sixth sense, which he calls his “Luck”, that alerts him to danger. These abilities, along with the fact that he lives in a tiny cottage with his grandmother, are the kind of thing that makes a teenager a prime target for bullies, so Callum does his best to pretend that he’s just like everyone else. Soon, though, things start happening that are out of the ordinary even for Callum, and he finds hims...more

Callum Scott has always been able to see ghosts, but when the veil between the human and demon world lifts, he discovers that his destiny is to fight and protect those that are hunted.
In my opinion, if you are going to write a book about demons and paranormal warfare, it has to be done in a way that avoids some of the most obvious cliches. Unfortunately, this book did not accomplish that. I found the characters...more

I have had this book for a while from netgalley. My first thought was if I saw the above book cover in the shop I would not buy it, however if I saw the following cover I would pick it up straight away and not even see what it was about.

I recieved this book from NetGalley in return for my honest review. Callum has always been able to see spirits and ghosts. But something has changed. The ghosts seem spooked and there is a new creature that has been hunting down people and tearing out their eyes. With the help of his friend Melissa from school, a ghost named Jacob, and his Grim called Doom, they will try to uncover the reason behind the all the killings before the creature strikes again. One problem-the monster is after Callum n...more
I decided to start reading this book the night before school started. That, dear readers, was a big mistake! Not only could I not put the book down because it was so fascinating, but I was also scared out of my mind! I have not been this creeped out in a long time, and while I absolutely LOVE this novel, I do not recommend reading it right before bed. I ended up “sleeping” with the lights on, but didn’t find much sleep at all, which, of course, made for an interesting school day the next morning...more

I really enjoyed this book. It was dark and creepy with beings that come straight from horror movies. Callum of course is your typical loner teen with abilities that he keeps hidden from everyone. He sees ghosts but that's not the only strange thing about him. Callum is a lot more special than he thought and when a strange creature begins to hunt him and other children around the area, Callum has to confide in someone. He picks Melissa, a gi...more

Predictable can be good too, it just needs strong imaginative writing to support it. A good plot can only save so much.
And such is the case of Callum Scott in Hunted. The premise is familiar in itself, a boy born with special abilities tries to ignore them and pretend he's normal. Then something happens that makes him face the extraordinary side of himself and he embarks on a journey to the unknown - unknown called Netherworld in this case. He gains friends and allies and finds out about his mis...more

Horror is probably my least favorite genre. I just don't enjoy reading the gruesome tales -- psychological thrillers, yes please, but not the blood and gore. So, I knew before I even started it that The Shadowing: Hunted would probably not be my favorite.
I think that fans of the horror genre will probably love this one. There's a creature that's attacking teens and gouging out their eyes and eating them. That one fact alone will probably have many wanting to read it. I think the explanation of...more

The Shadowing (Hunted) is the first installment of a series that explores the idea of chime children: those children born during the hour of the chime that have a close tie the Netherworld. Callum, a very powerful chime child, has gone his whole life thinking that he was crazy for being able to see ghosts all around town. He never thought anything of this power until the day he was faced with the Hunter, a supernatural creature out to hunt down the chime children and keep them from thwarting the...more
In his grandmother's tidy cottage, Callum Scott is safe from the ghosts that he sees everyday on the paths of his small town. However, the ghosts have been disappearing as a new creature comes to town, a creature that eats the eyes of it's victims. Exploring his grandmother's books with the help of a friend, Callum begins to learn that his powers may be able to help him defeat the monster and prevent an even larger conflict from happening. Alternating between horror and the gruesome, Slater intr...more
'The Shadowing' is chock-full of thrills and packed with enough creepy supernatural goings-on to keep you up all night. You'll most definitely have to read this book with the lights on!

I'm so happy this book has been published! We need more YA horror (yes, yes, I know I say this all the time but it's true) so I'm really excited about The Shadowing series. This one will definitely appeal to boys (and girls) and it has a lot to offer - from great writing, a terrifying storyline and an awesome cover so I'm sure it's going to do very well.

At the start of this book, I enjoyed it--with reservation. It took me a couple of chapters to become engaged in the story.
Callum is one of those characters you'd love to have as a friend. He's strong, down to Earth, and a just really good guy. And Melissa, the weird girl at school, is fantastic. And don't even get me started on the Grim and his friend, Jacob.
This story reminds me of some of the books I read growing up. It--dare I say it?--reminds me a little bit of The Dark is Rising. Yes, I lik...more

Adam Slater doesn't scare easily, which is lucky because his study overlooks a graveyard. He has a degree in Folklore and an unhealthy love of horror films, both of which helped to inspire The Shadowing books. If he wasn't a writer - and if his girlfriend would let him - he'd be a stunt driver.
