The Plot - Callum is a teenager with some freaky gift. He can see ghosts. So far so cliché, right? Ok, but this is the least of his problems cose there’s a monster that is after him and all of those who are just like him. Callum Scott has been able to see ghosts his whole life. When he was younger, he would often embarrass himself by trying to talk to people no one else could see. Now he is in high school and has taught himself how to hide his “gift” from others: his friends, his teachers, and his Gran, who he lives with in a small cottage outside of his English village. One evening, however, Callum suddenly discovers that his powers have taken a startling turn: he now has the ability to see the future, sensing lurking danger when a tingling sensation overpowers his body. It also appears that the ghost population of Marlock has increased in size, with specters from all walks of life floating nearby wherever he goes. To make matters worse, Callum senses something evil. A bizarre and gruesome series of murders nearby have the village on edge. As more and more teenagers are killed, Callum begins to fear that whatever is hunting them is after him as well. Will Callum be able to use the powers he’s kept hidden for years to save himself and the people he loves from this new evil?

Short but creepy, this first installment in a new horror series for young adults packs a powerful punch for a book of its size. Author Adam Slater’s enthusiasm for the genre is evident throughout the novel. Suspense is built effectively throughout the story with genuinely scary moments, the right amount of gore, and an overall feeling of dread. Callum Scott is a likable protagonist, generally keeping to himself in school but still managing to be popular and easygoing. His relationship with his Gran is very pleasing, as are the descriptions of their quaint and cozy cottage in the woods. Juxtaposed with these more heart-warming aspects of the novel is the horror that is The Hunter. The Hunter narrates the book from time to time, describing in detail how it relishes murder and enjoys toying with Callum. Some of the scenes in the story are more than a little creepy and will certainly cause the reader’s eyes to dart around looking for signs of a monster lurking in the corner. Thrown into the mix are references to supernatural folklore, including chime children, churchyard grims, and various methods of warding off evil. Since it is so short, this novel would be especially appealing for reluctant readers who will respond to the quick pacing and entertaining story. It will also be equally enjoyable for both teen and adult horror fans as well. The second installment, The Shadowing: Skinned is set to be released in 2012.

I love a good ghost story, and I was definitely surprised (but pleased!) with how creepy this book was, especially since it is less than 200 pages. Although it is full of British lingo (kitbag, motorway, etc.), I think this novel would be great for reluctant readers, especially boys. The story gets going immediately, wasting little time between scares. It does manage to establish an interesting setting and cast of characters, however, providing opportunities for discussion or critical thinking. I look forward to picking up the second installment, both for the potential scares and the possibilities the series holds for sparking an interest in reading for young adults. (less)

Con 14 añitos, Callum ve fantasmas por todas partes. El “pobre” también tiene premoniciones que claro, le alertan del peligro. Vive con su mamama (no tipee mal, así le decimos en Perú a las abuelas :D) una abuelita bastante peculiar… y bueno, ver fantasmas y tener premoniciones no hacen que pases exactamente desapercibido así que Callum es acosado por el maton del colegio… lo que hace que todo se complique. Me ha sorprendido el autor, es la primera vez que lo leo… y por lo general las escenas con tintes gore y ese suspenso y ese estar al borde del infarto del genero no me llaman mucho la atención… pero ha resultado que este autor sabe lo que hace… por ratos es bastante explicito, eso sí, pero otros tantos te deja todo a la imaginación… lo que para mí ha sido un buen balance. Callum es un protagonista bien trabajado y aun con todo el asunto sobrenatural un personaje muy humano. Lo que me resulta un tanto dificil de lograr cuando los autores meten tanto ausnto sobrenatural. El ritmo estuvo bien… si bien no es una historia trepidante como pensarías es algo violenta en los momentos justos y algo racional y acompasada cuando debe. El suspenso… como se imaginarán, hay muuuuchas escenas de estas, algunas terminan en sangre y en algunas otras es solo “el viento” lo que sí… el suspenso esta en toda la novela. Claro, no todo es bueno… los personajes secundarios son algo planos… pero tengo esperanza que mejoren o evolucionen en los próximos libros. Otra cosa que tengo que criticar… aunque esto creo es más una critica al editor es la sinopsis… jooo que es una novela de terror! Con esa sinopsis una se sabe como empieza y como acaba el libro… no sabes los detalles y ese ambiente de misterio que logra el autor… pero es como un mega resumen (¿??)

En fin… que me alegro haber hecho a un lado los miedos y los prejuicios… es una historia que está llena de emociones y de suficiente acción sobrenatural terrorífica como para mantenerte despierta toda la noche (q pasó) y que leerás arropada y con la luz prendida hasta las tantas (también pasó) y que definitivamente te hará pegar de brincos cuando tu puerta se abra sorpresivamente mientras lees y sea el perro!!! (ok, lo confieso...sí paso ¬¬) una historia muy difícil dejar de leer por el suspenso que era insoportable. Y que créanme, no puedes ir a dormir hasta que llegues al final. Recomendada.

A decent, though rather pedestrian read in the popular YA supernatural genre.

Cal is the quiet type who lives with his grandmother in a tiny house in a poor village in Britain. He can also see ghosts although apparently can't interact with them and has kept this ability to himself. Now the time of The shadowing is upon them and soon the walls between our world and that of the demons will start to thin. Cal is clearly going to be on the front lines in the upcoming war.

I chose to read this book on impulse, because I liked the blurb but one of the two available covers scared the lights out of me (the gory, not-portrayed-on-this-blog one, if you’re terribly curious).

The story started off slow for me, but once it took off I was completely engrossed. I loved watching Callum go from a slumped shouldered unsure teen into a more confident young man. I liked Melissa from the beginning, and wish I had been such a confident young woman in high school. The villain in this story, “the hunter”, gave me goose bumps. I wanted more details of the Netherworld, and I am hoping Slater satisfies this in the next book. The book contains a preview to the second book in this trilogy entitled The Shadowing: Skinned. This reader to intends see where Adam Slater will take this story next.

I have had this book for a while from netgalley. My first thought was if I saw the above book cover in the shop I would not buy it, however if I saw the following cover I would pick it up straight away and not even see what it was about.

I decided to start reading this book the night before school started. That, dear readers, was a big mistake! Not only could I not put the book down because it was so fascinating, but I was also scared out of my mind! And such is the case of Callum Scott in Hunted. The premise is familiar in itself, a boy born with special abilities tries to ignore them and pretend he's normal. Then something happens that makes him face the extraordinary side of himself and he embarks on a journey to the unknown - unknown called Netherworld in this case. He gains friends and allies and finds out about his mission in life - the one he was born fulfil.

The concept of a chime-child is new to me, but I quite like the idea. Especially when it's coupled with a young male protagonist. And written in third limited. I swoon. I've read way too many romance centred books about girls who obsess over boys written in first and this was like breath of fresh air.

I just wish the male author hadn't discarded the sense of romance completely. At least it would have made a great distraction for when Gran finds Callum and Melissa alone in the cottage flushed and breathing heavily.

"Snogging were you? Aren't you a bit young for that." I was fully expecting to read that line, but no, Gran immediately jumps to protect her precious books. Not only doesn't her reaction make me as the reader suspicious, it makes Callum look more thick-headed than he has the right to be.

Rest of the plot, however, falls into place smoothly. Unfortunately, that's about it. The writing is just good enough to support the plot, but it doesn't exactly elevate it to something exceptional. I've recently read few very well written and plotted books, so I can tell the difference even if I'm not able to argue why. All I can say that with the obvious repetitions - like the word "corridor" repeated unnecessarily in two sequenced sentences - and quotes like "Now he was trapped. Or was he?" the author indulges in wooden and dumbed down text way too often for a work that's aimed for the adult audience.

Still, I liked the book well enough and hope that whatever issues I had with the writing are resolved before the sequel.(less)

Horror is probably my least favorite genre. I just don't enjoy reading the gruesome tales -- psychological thrillers, yes please, but not the blood and gore. So, I knew before I even started it that The Shadowing: Hunted would probably not be my favorite.

Callum, a very powerful chime child, has gone his whole life thinking that he was crazy for being able to see ghosts all around town. He never thought anything of this power until the day he was faced with the Hunter, a supernatural creature out to hunt down the chime children and keep them from thwarting the evil plans that have been prepared for the Shadowing. With the help of friends, both supernatural and human, Callum will come to learn how truly important he is in the war between the Netherworld and the earthly realm.

Honestly, as I started reading this book I became very bored very fast. It started out with your typical opening horror lines of prey being stalked by the hunter, with very simplistic language and poor writing style. I don't know at what point this changed for me, but suddenly I found myself immersed in the story-line and the characters. There came a point where I didn't want to put the book down because I needed to know what happened next. Apparently, the author took a bit longer to find his stride in writing this story, but in the end he nailed it.

The creatures that were in this book are not ones I hear of all too often, or ever. Creatures such as the Fetch, the Grim, Chime Children, and the Born Dead are all creatures I haven't heard of or at least not heard described in the way they were in this particular story. The authors description of the various creatures honestly had me horrified for the main character. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to stare down the fetch or be confronted by a Grim, both of which you had no idea existed or anyway to explain what they were. I look forward to reading more about Callum on his journey through the Shadowing in the sequel. The e-book gave a nice preview of whats to come, and I'm extremely excited to hear what happens.

Overall: The book didn't start well for me, but ended with a bang. The characters were sound, and the creatures were very creepy.

'The Shadowing' is chock-full of thrills and packed with enough creepy supernatural goings-on to keep you up all night. You'll most definitely have to read this book with the lights on!

I must admit that I was a bit apprehensive about reading this to begin with, as I'm not usually a fan of the horror genre. It's certainly not something that I would normally have picked for myself. It has the scariest cover ever! However, I'm so glad that I was sent a copy of this and gave it a go because it's a stellar opening to the series and has left me dying for more. I got sucked into the story and found it incredibly difficult to put it down as the suspense was unbearable. I couldn't go to bed until I'd reached the end.

The story centres around Callum Scott, a young boy who has the ability to see ghosts and who starts having strange premonitions which warn him about events to come. He lives with his Gran who is dismissive of anything to do with magic or the supernatural. When children start getting murdered, Callum may be the only one that can stop the strange creature responsible. But how can one boy stop a terrible evil?

Callum is a great central character as he seems so normal but has an incredible ability which may be the only thing that can save the human world from what lies on the other side. A little is told about Callum's family history but I feel like there's much more to come. I suspect a big secret could end up being revealed.

What I loved about 'The Shadowing' was that it was such a fast-paced and exciting read. Each chapter was full of thrills and spills and interesting plot twists. I had no idea what was coming next and spent most of the time on the edge of my seat. It had a stunning opening which really set the tone for the rest of the book and a fantastic ending which was jaw-droppingly brilliant.

This book will appeal hugely to a male audience who are looking for the next big thing in this genre but that's not to say that females won't love it too. I did! There are a couple of bits which made me a bit squeamish as Slater doesn't hold back from the gore-factor, so I probably wouldn't recommend this to very young readers but those who are slightly older will lap this up.

I'm eagerly anticipating getting my hands on 'The Shadowing: Skinned' which is the next book in the series. Who knows what's coming next!(less)

I'm so happy this book has been published! We need more YA horror (yes, yes, I know I say this all the time but it's true) so I'm really excited about The Shadowing series. This one will definitely appeal to boys (and girls) and it has a lot to offer - from great writing, a terrifying storyline and an awesome cover so I'm sure it's going to do very well.

At the start of this book, I enjoyed it--with reservation. It took me a couple of chapters to become engaged in the story.

Callum is one of those characters you'd love to have as a friend. He's strong, down to Earth, and a just really good guy. And Melissa, the weird girl at school, is fantastic. And don't even get me started on the Grim and his friend, Jacob.
