4 and 1/2 Stars! Love on the Underground Railroad: an Unusual English lord and an American Minx.

For those of you who love Horsman’s novels, be sure and read this before VIRGIN STAR if you can, as this comes first. This one is set in 1818 in New Orleans and VIRGIN STAR is set five years later in 1823—together they tell the story of two virile and worthy heroes who consider themselves brothers. Both were raised in Ireland though only Seannesy, the hero of VIRGIN STAR, is Irish.

PASSION’S JOY tells

I’m reviewing this as a book I purchased back in 1987 and have re-read a number of times; I still have my original copy. If I had been writing reviews back then I would have given this 5 stars. But as someone reading this story in today’s social climate, the very innocent and naïve persona of our heroine—of all of this author’s heroines—could be a little difficult to take if they hadn’t read the book before. The setting in the American South and later in England, prior to the Civil War, does app ...more

This book was just a little odd... I found that while the heroine was sweet and likable, I didn't like the hero... He was a jerk and CRAZY!!! I didn't dislike the book but I can't really say that I liked it!

Ugh!!!!

Where to start?

The book got off to a terrible start with me from page 1 onwards as it is clear from the outset that we are to have 'dear diary' entries inflicted on us throughout.

The heroine Joy Claret (not a good name) is the niece of a dying consumptive doctor who seems to have no idea what is going on in his home. They live in the south Pre civil war and she is engaged in helping run away slaves escape with the help of a drunken con artist minister and his freed man.

Shelves: historical
Let me begin by saying I am not a new fan of Ms. Horsman's work. I read Virgin Star (the sequel to this book, Passion's Joy) probably fifteen years ago or more. I loved her other work too but I particularly loved Virgin Star and re-read it many, many times. It is one of maybe 10 romance books out of twenty years that has remained on my keeper shelf. Somehow--I guess because I wasn't on the internet back then--I didn't realize there was this book, a prequel, telling the story of Joy and Ram.

If you like heroines in pursuit, or one of those stories that clearly shows the heroine loving the hero hell of a lot more than he does her, then this book will suit you. It sure isn't in my taste, I couldn't even finish it because the heroine annoyed me too much.

The hero (27-29) is a complete slut. His Mr Happy is kept quite joyous with all the numerous women he keeps busy around town, because apparently, he is busy denying his feelings for her or don't want to feel anything for her. Meanwhile,

Passion's Joy was my first book by this author. It's a true bodice-ripper with lots of drama, a hero that just can't seem to make up his mind and the usual innocent starry-eyed heroine that you'd find in this kind of historical novels. I was really enjoying the book but towards the end it just started losing points for me and I found myself skimming through the unending drama. (view spoiler) Passion's Jo ...more

Wonderful

I have always loved this book and read it many times over the years. I wish there was a true sequel to this story that would carry over tyo their children that were spoken of in this book.

This is one of the books that changed my life. There are some flaws, but as my father used to tell me "don't look for holes in the story" It is so beautifully descriptive that you can almost feel the sweltering sticky heat and hear the buzzing of the insects as the story takes you through the pre-civil war south. The characters are so real and fleshed out, I cry repeatedly when I read this (which I do at least once a year). It's got history and romance and adventure like you wouldn't believe. LO ...more
