I once upon a time read Luanne Rice. And then stopped reading her books because it seemed the characters were starting to overlap themselves in my mind. And even though it’s been years since I read Rice, it seemed like just yesterday, and the characters were once again typical of her novels. This book is all about the relationships between parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, and the choices they made in life. As a mother of a wonderful daughter I found myself often angry with L ...more

3 1/2 stars! I loved the characters and the backdrop of this book, the story line had a ways to go with me though. I felt the Climax came to early and Luanne Rice was grasping at straws to find the right ending...it just did not happen. I would have also liked a true Epilogue instead of one that really should have just been the last chapter.

Well , well ,well.I have so many things to say about this book, it pissed me off in so many ways!It took me a while until I managed to finish this story, the first part was just too depressing for me, I mean I went "WTF" a lot of times because the emotions and memories were so strong. I just have to get all of this out of my chest.

I had problems in understanding Lyra's tantrums and what made her fall into that big depression.I mean, co

A história é simples.

Luanne Rice is a wonderful writer and I enjoy reading her books. They are full of beautiful scenery descriptions and complicated relationships. Although this book has both of these, I did not feel it was as good as most of her other books. The setting is mainly the isle of Capri and it felt like I was there...wonderful imagery. The story is complex focusing on an estranged mother and her two daughters. The story is written from the oldest daughter's perspective intermingled with thoughts from th ...more

Really like Luanne Rice's books. Loved that she continues "Geometry of Sisters" with the other two sisters, Lucy & Pell. Story set on the island of Capri where mother and daughters reunite after 10 years. Read to find out what happens

Pell and Lucy Davis are 14 and 16 going on 30. They have survived their mother, Lyra, abandoning them at at young age, their father dying of a brain tumor, and have learned to only trust themselves. As The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners opens, we meet Pell on her way to Capri to reunite with her mother, seeking the truth of her departure, and hoping to restore their relationship for her and her sisters sake.

I would recommend this book to individuals seeking a quick summer read. The author's descri

This book made me want to book a flight to Capri. The authors visualization in setting the scenes in Capri made me feel I was there. Pell travels to Capri to see her mother, Lyra, for the first time in 10 years to try to reunite with her mother and convince her to come home. Having lost her father to a brain tumor, she desparately wants to have a parent in her and her sister Lucy's lives. Lyra left the girls in their childhood after suffering from severe depression, and the feeling she needed to ...more

A departure from her normal books (you know, woman gets beat up by husband and escapes to start a new life only to find love again...or womans husband dies and she finds out deep dark secrets about his past. etc.)

Years ago wealthy and priviledged socialite Lyra Davis battled depression and anxiety. She cannot be who she feels she is supposed to be, rather she does what is "expected" by her family, and is never happy.
So she does what she can to save herself and her sanity... She flees from her ma

I never met a Luann Rice book I did not like. I'm serious. I love the way Luann does families. I eat it up. I can't get enough. It's one of the things I try to emulate in my own writing--portraying those really complicated issues that family members and close friends face, the price you pay for being close to another person, what they feel, who they are. This really emotional connection with the characters is what I like best about novels.

In The Deep Blue Sea For Beginners, sixteen year old Pell

Não que alguma vez eu tenha posto os meus pés em Capri (quem me dera) mas basta ler ...more

The Summer of our lives was the first book I read of this author, and to be honest not much excited me a lot.
This book talks about, forgiveness, hope, reconciliation, love, the departure could be tonics for a good novel, but turned out to be a very exciting book. The story takes place in the beautiful Capri, the author manages to describe beautiful landscapes, and sites that we want to convey to there, so long the narrative we enter then into Lyra's life, a woman who abandoned her daughters and

here are my thoguhts on the book: it started out a little slow and i dont think that a lot of backround information about Pell and her mother's relationship was given up front and so i didnt get the depth to that as much as i would have liked in the begining.
also, i was disgusted by max's affections toward lyra. a grandfatherly relationship would be just fine.
i found rafe's character to be the most interesting. i liked the little pieces you learned about him especially with monica and the inci

I've read some Luanne Rice books better than this one and some worse - this was about middle of the road with the typical Rice characters trying to deal with a myriad of life trials and angst. In this book, Pell and Lucy, two teenagers, are trying to come to grips with a mother who abandoned them when they were 4 and 6 years old and went to live on the island of Capri. After their father dies and Lucy starts exhibiting some strange behavior, Pell, the older of the two sisters, decides it's time ...more

Nisto temos ainda o relato das imens ...more

The book was okay, easy to follow. But holy moly. The verb "said" was used over and over and over. One time I counted and it was fourteen times in a row. Every now and then the author would throw in "answered" or "replied" or something similar. If I had lots of time, I would take this book and search how many times "said" was used versus another verb for that purpose.

Luanne Rice writes very well about all kinds of relationships. This book shows that she can handle the subject of depression and recovery, too. As in real life, the "bad person" is not always all bad and the "good person" is not always all good. Life is more complicated than that. It was a good story.
It also left me wanting to fly to Capri.

It took me awhile to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. There were a couple of things that really angered me about this book though:

1. Lyra left her kids and didn't even return to be there for them when their father died. That is the height of selfishness right there. And once Taylor died, she had no problem leaving her girls in the clutches of her mother who had basically sucked out all Lyra's dreams and will to live? REALLY??

2. Lyra was bitter with Rafe for most of the book beca

I just finished my second Luanne Rice read and ir just happened to be a sequel to The Geometry Sisters. I find it interesting that I just randomly picked about both books from the library having no idea what either was about. Although I wouldn't say that I loved the story, I do enjoy her writing hence the second random read.

Both reads about "ghost in the nursery" meaning family secrets that slowly shake the very foundation of homes, lost love, and bonds that distance and time can not erode.
