Poetry. A limber and vivid sad clown routine of a collection, reading SMILES OF THE UNSTOPPABLE is like knowing the secret password to an illegal speakeasy of imagination. From knife fights between Sharks and Jets to Chewbacca Last Suppers, these are poems that belong in the cold kitchens of the heart: hilarious and swooning, caramel in sensibility, and endless in feeling. ...more

This book made me rethink
line breaks.

Bredle doesn't sound like anyone else.

He does retro-pop culture in a way that feels universal and lasting.

I like when he writes about love. Also chocolate milk and cheesy burger macaroni.

It's an acidy, imaginative book with juicy-juice imagery.

My favorite poems in here are Dark Energy, Rainbow, Aubade and Light Shower.

Bredle out, man.

a friend once warned me about frank stanford's the battlefield where the moon says I love you, told me it was the kind of book that was so good it made you write like it without realizing. this is that kind of book. very very good.

"As I carried this book around with me, reading, I heard from multiple passersby ‘Gross, is that someone throwing up?’ to which I would say ‘No, I think it is just a kid bobbing for apples.’ Their response then is usually calm, mostly understanding, with maybe even a restatement like we are all guilty of: ‘O. I thought it was someone puking.’ This to me is reading Jason Bredle’s Smiles of the Unstoppable – we think it is one thing but it changes to another, and then another, until we start to se ...more

Consistently laugh out loud funny (especially if you read the poems out loud, which you probably should), with poems in the back end shifting the register enough to make one want to go back and want to re-evaluate the proceedings. //

Those were the days, weren't they?
The way we'd sit, all sad?
How upset the mustard stain made me,
how I thought writing Kanye West could solve our problems,
how the idea of hearing our local news anchor say
from one lemur to a city of many other lemurs, have a good eveni

I read this on the beach in one sitting when I was planning on leaving because it was really cold. I smiled and felt a warm sadness, these poems linger.

"When I was really upset, I'd crawl inside the refrigerator and cry.
How I wanted to leave this world, become a waffle iron,
to give a sleepy hungry person the love
to begin each day unlike me."

I'm now lost in 2005.

Hilarious and sad. I felt, reading this multiple times over, like someone was somehow actually killing me with a rubber knife. Like everyone I feel like I've ever let down was spitting on me...but in an understandably loving way.
