This is a sweet, contemporary romance that's a quick and easy read. Girl next door and former tomboy Jodie shed her image years ago, leaving the small town she grew up in to become a rodeo queen.

But things change and Jodie has returned home, glad to leave the make up and glitz behind she has a vision to transform her deceased father's ranch into a riding centre for people with disabilities. In all the years she's been away she has never forgotten bad boy next door Teague.

Teague has always been a little bit in love with Jodie, but things have changed. He's cleaned up his image and become a successful businessman and ranch owner in the years since she's been away. Yet, despite everything a part of him still doesn't think he's good enough for her.

There were some things that really worked in this story and some other bits not so. Teague cares for his older brother with Downs Syndrome, which gives him the complex role of brother, parent and carer. This part of the story was well written, interesting and added a rich layer to Teague's characterisation. Jodie has trouble shedding her glitzy, rodeo queen image and reinvent herself and get her new career taken seriously. As a consequence, she shows grit and determination as well as compassion.

Then there's the not so good. There is an odd sub plot about Courtney a wealthy, young woman who for some inexplicable reason desperately wants to be with Teague and won't leave him alone. It gets complicated with the role of her rich, magnate father, some polo players and a nasty arson plot which all got a little bit strange to be honest. I actually think the story might have been better without it included.

VERDICT:

While this was an enjoyable story, it missed the spark of a brilliant story. The plot was a little muddled at times and distracted from the central love story, which meant I didn't always fully engage with the main characters.

I did however, very much enjoy the background of Teague's Downs Syndrome brother and Jodie's role setting up her ranch as a disabled riding centre, and when the love story worked it was both sexy and tender.(less)

But Teague has a past, an abusive and drunken father, the type of man Teague swore he would never become no matter what. He has his own deep demons to fight; on more than one occasion he has had the urge to put his fist through someone's head and struggled to control the anger. Along with this, he also never believed he would ever be good for the one girl who stole his heart so long ago and who was now in his bed, so what difference has a few years made none in his mind he will never be good enough.

For Jodi things are not so very different she also has a obstacle on the road to Teague's heart, her mother has made her swear that she will stay away from him for he is sure to turn out to be just like his father and she does not want that for her daughter. No Jodi deserves better than the bad boy next door.

This book had it all for me, it had forbidden romance, passion, love, friendship, secrets and delicious love scenes all wrapped up into one action packed western romance! There is not one dull moment in this one!!

We see both Teague and Jodi meet and face their demons and obstacles, and I loved seeing how their "unwanted" relationship unfolded. It also sent across an important message that the famous line of "the apple does not fall far from the tree" is not always true.

Cowboy Fever is the second book from this very fine author who's books are a true treasure to find, her cowboys have a way of creeping into your heart and remaining on your mind for a long time.(less)

I’m glad I decided to give Joanne Kennedy a second-chance read. While I enjoyed some things about Cowboy Trouble, the first book of hers I read, there were others that didn’t work for me. But this time around, she’s given readers a nice story through and through with only slight blips. There’s more emotion in this book that gives the hero and heroine more depth.

Of course, as soon as she hits town, gossip begins and then she comes face to face with Teague Treadwell, her old crush from their school days. Teague was the town bad boy, and though he’s tried to gussy himself up, he still exudes that badass aura that the women go for, even Jodie herself. Surviving the first meeting with him, she goes on her way to get things up and running at the old homestead. All with Teague on her mind.

He’s tried so hard to live past his reputation he inherited from his father, but folks still look at Teague as the boy with a temper from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s taken care of Troy, his older Down’s Syndrome brother, since their parents died, he’s built them a new home to leave behind the memories of beatings that occurred in their mobile home, all with eye toward bettering himself for the day Jodie returns. When she finally blows into his life again, he hopes she sees the new man he is now and that that will make a difference to her to perhaps pick up where they left off years before. But when he remembers how he pushed her away, Teague isn’t so sure Jodie has forgiven him, even though his rebuff was for her own good.

I like both of these characters. They were friends before their one-night stand years ago, and I like that their new relationship is not terribly awkward when they’re together now. It doesn’t take long before they hit the sheets again, and this time it’s a man and a woman loving each other instead of the boy and girl they used to be. Which also means they do talk things out instead of letting things come between them. Well, most things anyway. There’s the usual jealousy issues that each think about but don’t voice until it’s nearly too late. It’s Troy who is the common denominator and brings them together. And I love Troy. He’s as sweet as can be, a man in a child’s body wanting to be on his own, do things on his own without little brother hovering anymore. He’s a wonderful character.

One thing I don’t like is how Jodie doubts Teague throughout the book. When she finally tells him she does trust him and believes in him, she’s known that all along but lets fear and doubt rule her, even after they make love a few times. This happens too often in romance and I’m just tired of reading it. I realize we want our heroes to be kind and generous whenever possible, but Teague takes this to a new level when it comes to Courtney, a newcomer to town who’s decided she wants the cowboy and will have him. The woman is a nuisance and I wanted to shake the man when he’s nice to her one too many times after her many shenanigans. The mystery surrounding a neighbor’s death gets a little convoluted, but for all intents and purposes, it works despite all the elements involved.

Overall, characters and storyline are much better than the previous book. We’re not thrown off on a tangent, given ideas that don’t work with the entire story. And at first I thought the books are related in some way since the covers are similar, including One Fine Cowboy, the release just before CF. Usually when you see covers this similar, it’s a series or trilogy or they’re at least in some way related, but these books are all different characters with no relation whatsoever. I’m a series hound, so I would have picked them up based on the covers alone and would have been sorely disappointed. Yeah, okay, read the back cover. I know, but sometimes you get a tad excited when discovering a new series, and considering these are cowboys, I know I would have purchased and asked questions later.

But all that aside, with this book Ms. Kennedy has upped my entertainment level and I’ll definitely try more of her future reads.

Western romances are not my favorite genre to read but I was surprised how quickly and easily I become immersed in this bright and original story. The best thing about this book is the depth in each of the main characters and how genuine their love felt.

Cowboy Fever is the story about Jodi Brand. Jodi used to be a tomboy but gave it up to pursue a brighter future. She changes her image and transformed herself into the home town beauty queen. Then used her money to move to the big city and get an education. However, life in the city has changed her. As the local beauty queen she was judged on her looks. In the city, she got rid of the make-up and let herself be ‘normal’ again. At college she was admired for her brains and she liked that feeling.

When her father dies, Jody returns to help her mother and take care of their old place. She wants to use her degree in special education to help challenged youngsters while riding horses. However, the town isn’t ready for this more natural and real looking Jody, they want their made-up ‘queen’ instead. However, there is one person who likes the old tomboy Jody. Teague Treadwell knew Jodi when she was a tomboy and they were young playmates and friends. When she started ‘doll-ing’ herself up she let their friendship wane. And he misses that Jody. Now that she has come back he is determined to pursue her.

Jody always cared for Teague and was very attracted to him but as the local bad boy she had to cut him from her life if she wanted to get the scholarship that came with the beauty queen title. But now that she is back the old flames return between them. But can she forgive him their last parting?

This a fresh and entertaining read. I really enjoyed Jody’s character in particular. She wants to be herself and not the made up beauty queen. I liked her caring nature and how she got involved with special education because she loved Teague’s older brother who has Down’s syndrome. This book really brings up issues about people who are challenged but in a sympathetic not preachy way that made me admire Teague and Jody. My only quibble is that there is also a subplot concerning a girl who wants Teague but I found it distracted me from the two main characters. But the rest of the book is a pure joy to read. Teague has loved Jody from childhood. I particularly enjoyed reading how much Teague cares for Jody and wants her to care for him just a much. He never had real stability or much affection in his life and this made their relationship very touching. Especially since Teague was poor and came from an abusive family. In many ways Teague it less sure of himself than Jody and reading their insecurities and eventual love was very poignant.

What I liked best about this story is that the main characters felt like real people who had a past and were meant to be together. This western is rare find, with two main characters that will quickly charm you.

Once you start it, you can't put it down. Joanne Kennedy writes a very fun and catchy story that as a reader you easily get swept into. She plants seeds in your head in the beginning of the book and you could not wait to see how it plays out. Yes, she makes you wait until the last chapter to see how that seed she plants plays out. As a fan of this author, I had no problem diving into this story even though I am not a fan of western reads. They always seem to go overboard on the cowboy theme, but I have found that author Joanne Kennedy knows how to write her westerns.

All I have to say is WOW. I'm not a huge Country/Western book lover, more of a highlander fan, but I won this one and thought I'd give it a try! Boy am I glad I did! In most ways, this book definitely delivers what is promises. This is a hot and heavy cowboy romance--my first ever. I loved the main characters, Teague and Jodi, and I appreciated the way the author dealt with Teague's brother, Troy, who has Down's Syndrome. In addition to this, the author throws in a little mystery and a lot of steamy sex scenes. For the majority of romance readers, this is a feast for the eyes and the imagination.

For the first half of the book, I was pretty impressed. There was very little detail in the bedroom scenes, and the language used in the book was fairly mild. The author had an easy-to-read style, and I genuinely cared about what happened to the characters. Jodi seemed to want to please everyone else rather than living her life, and I was glad to see how the author showed the true growth and maturity in the character. It was also nice to see Teague beat the odds. And as for Troy, I am always glad to see people with disabilities accomplishing so much.

I decided to give this book three stars for two reasons. First of all, while I can't fault the story too much, it is just a basic romance. The addition of suspense and mystery probably would bump the rating up to a 3.5, but it is still what it is--a cowboy romance. Secondly, as I approached the second half, I found myself skimming the rather descriptive bedroom scenes. I do not mind some description, and thankfully the author did not go into the kind of detail that usually causes me to put it down, but I wish that the characters had not gotten so hot and heavy over and over again with no thought of marriage in sight. But that is just me. I was glad that some foul language was avoided, but the increasing use of the "s" word amongst others got old pretty fast. I also did not find the character of Courtney very believable.

While this book may not have been high in my list, I still appreciated the author's style, and the story never failed to hold my interest. So depending on your individual tastes, this book may or may not be for you. I might hesitate to read another book by the author due to the issues I raised, but I cannot say I would refuse with certainty.(less)

The pacing of this book felt so slow which was disappointing after an intriguing first couple of chapters. Small town girl makes good in the big city and returns home to a second chance at love. Only the book seemed to ramble and feel its way to a secondary plot slowly. Several themes could have been flushed out more to make it more intriguing, while others could have used less. I almost gave up on this one early on as the first few chapters felt extremely forced, and there was a lot of expository telling by the heroine that made me a bit nuts.

However, I stuck with it, and it significantly improved. This is a sweet romance that felt a bit like Robyn Carr/Jodi Foster. Some of the plot was really nonsensical, with too many "misunderstandings" that could have been solved with a three minute conversation.

Cowboy Fever doesn’t waste any time getting to the action. And I myself tend to like that. Jodi’s first day back in town after being gone for five years, she’s back in bed with Teague. After that, these two were dancing around each other a good portion of the book. It was obvious that they truly cared about each other, but outside factors kept them apart.

This was a cute story about a former rodeo Queen, Jodi, who hightailed it out of Purvis, Wyoming leaving behind her childhood friend Teague - son of the town drunk and wifebeater. Great cast of characters, including Teague's older brother Troy who has Down's Syndrome, a gossiping pharmacist named Darla, a spoiled little rich girl Courtney with her little dog Honeybucket, and numerous other peripheral characters that make you want to visit Purvis for yourself.

This story is about a former rodeo queen/town sweetheart trying to shed that image and her bad boy first love cowboy who also can't get over the past. I just didn't find all that much interesting in these characters. The gal in the book wasn't "redeemable" and the cowboy seemed to be.......a pansy, for lack of a better word. I found myself skimming more than reading.

Well, I'm in love with Teague Treadwell. Another great vacation read. I'm so sad to leave Arizona tomorrow because I feel like I met the real cowboys of Wyoming here. Thanks Joanne!
