I started this book in August and forgot to take it with me when we went on vacation, then one thing after another got in the way of me finishing it. Over the weekend we lost power for four days which gave me time to read, with flashlights or candles or book lights, but time without other distractions. But Brody has now come home and is in the process of building his own house and barn on property purchased from his brother's wife, Trisha McCall Creed--whose story was the subject of the second book in this trilogy, Creed's Honor. Now he appears to have accepted the need to carry his share of the ranching load even though he will be living in his own home, seemingly ready to once again shoulder his family responsibilities and the relationships that go with them. Something is different about the man now. He has made peace, for the most part, with his brother and yet, there are shadows in Brody's past, a deep hurt that he doesn't seem to want to share, or perhaps, he finds it too painful to revisit. In any case, his family is thankful he is back and seems prepared to stay. His rodeo days are over. Add to that the fact that Trisha and Connor were expecting their first child, and Brody deeply desired the sense of happiness and contentment he perceived in his twin brother.

This novel is about lots of things--finding a way out of an emotional maze that is painful, summoning the best in one's self, the healing power of love, overcoming fears that are so deeply rooted that they have become accepted as part and parcel of one's life, and finding hope for the future. It is also about the need to forgive one's self, especially when the guilt and hurt are really not legitimate nor are they about anything that can be changed.

I have to say that I liked all the Creed men in these three novels but I really came to resonate most with Brody, possibly because he was so vulnerable and tried so hard to be the hard-bitten cowboy rodeo champ that everyone else saw. Inside he was lonely, needy, and wanting to be settled and happy. He knew he had to own up to some really foolish and wounding behavior in the past, especially toward Carolyn who he had secretly desired for years, but his fumbling efforts to overcome the difficulties and barriers his behavior had caused were endearing in a way. That he would make the efforts he did were proof that down deep he was a man of deep emotion and passions, wanting a mate who would return those feelings and who would help him to feel complete.

Carolyn, too, was a tender, lost, hurting soul. She and Trisha Creed had started a business together. She was artistic, sensitive, and had major trust issues from being abandoned by the people she trusted and forced to be on her own from early age. She was a wanderer--a professional house-sitter, going from place to place, never really feeling like any spot on the planet was hers exclusively. Starting the business with Trisha made a difference--she felt that perhaps there was a place for her that no one could take away and that was not temporary. Her pain over Brody's abandonment eight years earlier had never been relieved as she really didn't know why he had left, especially as they has been talking marriage just hours before. It was a wound that just wouldn't heal. His leaving just reinforced her belief that any person she loved would eventually abandon her.

Linda Lael Miller is one of those writers that just knows how to craft these characters so that they reach out and grab the reader's imagination and they just don't let go. In fact, this was so true in this instance, that I was truly sorry when the novel ended. There are also some surprises here and a facet of Brody's personality that emerged in such a way that some of his friends and family were truly surprised. All the characters in these novels were unique and interesting in their own way. Carolyn was a character that I felt deeply about, and I almost felt a hurting sensation when she experienced another disappointment or when she and Brody just couldn't seem to get on the same wave length. All is a testimony to Miller's writing expertise and, I think, her ability to translate the images of her own imagination onto the pages of her books.

Lovers of those manly cowboy type men will love this trilogy and I think especially this book. It has capped off the three-book series so beautifully and yes, it is fiction but no, it isn't a waste of time. It is worth every minute and you may be just like me--already thinking about re-reading it.

I give this novel a 4.5 out of 5

Perhaps it’s nostalgia for my family’s farming background, or just the fact that it’s bloody cold here in Melbourne right now and I’m yearning for some sunshine, but Lael Miller’s The Creed Legacy hit the spot for me.

My first encounter with Lael Miller was with A Creed in Stone Creek, a by-the-numbers cowboy romance that trotted along nicely enough to begin with, but came a little unstuck with its emphasis on old-school, pre-feminist ideals and its slightly creepily inbred characters. But although The Creed Legacy relies heavily on the tropes of night-and-day twin brothers, dead parents, mysterious pasts, and poorly timed pregnancies, it’s a solid enough read that delivers exactly the sort of tug-of-war romantic shenanigans you’d expect from a small-town romance–and with some bonus humour and lovable small-town types thrown in to boot.

Brody Creed is the stubble-toting, lasoo-tossing, bronco-riding twin brother of Conner Creed, but unlike sweet-as-pie (but still acceptably manly) Conner, Brody bears the scars of his past mistakes. Brooding and introspective, he has quite the knack for getting people offside. Not least, of course, Carolyn Simmons, around whom he’s liable to witness more sparks than Nicholas Tesla. But Carolyn’s been burnt by bad-boy Brody before, and like all good romance heroines she finds herself more than a little ambivalent about getting into the ring again with this bronco.

The romance in The Creed Legacy is fairly par for the course, with the two main characters flitting regularly between loathing and loving, and the author milking every opportunity for miscommunication for all it’s worth. Admittedly, this does get a mite ridiculous at times, particularly given that Brody and Carolyn spend so much time navel gazing–simply voicing some of those thoughts would help move things along with far less pain, boys and girls! But Lael Miller stops all of this from becoming too much of a drudge with her surprisingly likeable cast of secondary characters–bonus points in particular for Winston the cat, who manages to be surprisingly articulate for someone with a vocabulary limited to “Mreow”.

Lael Miller also does a solid job of fleshing out her setting, and though everything is seen through rose-coloured lenses, it’s easy enough to suspend disbelief. I did find that the pacing was a little erratic, with constant flashbacks dragging things down somewhat, and roughly a hundred pages spent describing Carolyn’s much-loved “gypsy skirt”…all of which is followed up by a wham-bam ending of some hot sex, a couple of ”I love you”s and the inevitable marriage. Goodness, these cowboys move fast–particularly given that Brody and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other for seven years before this, and they end up going out on a total of two dates. I know that an HEA involving marriage is essential for a romance novel, but this all moved along something akin to a hooning teenager on the freeway. It all happens so quickly, in fact, that the marriage is rather randomly appended into the epilogue.

There are a few other quirks that may be romance genre standards, or that may be Lael Miller’s own idiosyncracies (I’m not familiar enough with either to say for certain). Brody seems to like the idea of an independently minded woman (as does Carolyn), yet both spend plenty of time dreamily fantasising about home-cooked meals and foot rubs and so on; we similarly get a weird contrast between Brody’s desire to “make love” with Carolyn and then his subsequent pressuring of her, something which never sits well with me. There’s one scene in particular that I’d chalk up as sexual harassment, too–and the fact that Carolyn laughs it off with an “oh, you!” is a bit teeth-gritting. I would also love to see a heroine who didn’t constantly struggle with issues of self-worth. While Lael Miller tries to depict Carolyn as strong and independent, all of this is somewhat undercut by Carolyn’s tragic past and what seems like a need to be rescued. (And as an aside, why can’t beautiful women ever see that they’re beautiful?)

In all, though, The Creed Legacy is a solid read, and Lael Miller does a fine job of fleshing out her characters, making the most of that romantic tension, and in giving us a setting that we want to return to. Ah, those cowboys. They really are hard to resist, aren’t they?(less)

Ms. Miller has cowboy romance down to a science and her equations always mean some jean wearing, horse riding boy will go after and get his girl. In this novel she continues the story of The Creeds of Lonsome Bend Colorado and she takes off where Conner’s story ended with the long lost son Brody. How she makes these characters seem so down to earth is a mystery as they’re usually larger than life and rich beyond means, but she makes them humble but never meek and someone you might just run into at the local diner or Cattleman’s dance. She does this with her decisively western drawly dialogue fully equipped with ma’am, shucks and the like, but in doing so she really brings the west alive for her readers, with the country manners mixed with home on the range narrative where the cowboys and cowgirls don’t mind slinging a few four letter words along with the hay. Where the scenery is an equal star with the characters. And the characters will all dig themselves deep into the audiences heart. Her hero Brody is a complex man with a heart of gold that he disguises behind his rough attitude. Her heroine Carolyn is every readers idea of the perfect combination of beauty and brains with the saddest of tales to tell. The romance is my favorite, second chances and the author takes that extra step to make this one memorable by putting in all the mistakes they must overcome from the past. The love scenes are not tame, there’s no mask for these very earthy scenes that are intense and adult and very well done.

So come back to the higher elevation and continue the story of this prominent, enigmatic and very prolific family brought to us by one if not the greatest author of contemporary western romance, and don’t forget she writes a mean historical western romance too.
Thank you Ms. Miller for another exciting adventure staring characters that I will remember long after the last page is read.

Linda Lael Miller does it again with this novel. I was looking for something light hearted to read with (sorry) a definite good ending and this book did not disappoint. It was funny and serious. We always expect funny, caught off guard scenes from Linda; but this book had a sad note to it as well. The blurb is a little deceiving i think. Brody is back and building a house and barn on what used to be Tricia McCall's land. He swears he's there to stay now. Carolyn has been house sitting in and around Lonesome Bend for a long time and years ago she and Brody has a bit of a fling for a week or so when suddenly he disappeared only leaving a lame note and drunken phone call later. She had trusted Brody and trusting was not something she's ever done easily and he broke her heart. Brody has a secret though and that's why he ran because he felt he had to. They both have to find a way to let go of all those bad memories and be truthful with each other if they want to be together, There is a serious side to this book but plenty of hot and funny moments mixed in to balance it all out. The few things that annoyed me some was the talk of the skirt Carolyn was making. It was described several times but i kept getting a gaudy picture in my mind. Brody's reaction to it was funny cause no man would pay that much attention to a skirt. Talk of the skirt was overdone. After reading the latest three books in this series Brody is my favorite of the three. This was another great book by LLM. Brody was a carefree and non-committed cowboy who would rather be traveling on the road than settle down. The Creed Legacy is a wonderfully written story. It’s rather inspirational in some ways, and I found myself drawn to the characters inside this story. Lonesome Bend hasn’t given her any good romantic leads in eight years, so she puts herself onto a dating website hoping to find Mr Right. Brody had decided to stay well away from Carolyn when he returned to the ranch. He bought some land, got himself a willing bed partner and then sets out to start afresh. Conscious that he hurt her badly, and even more aware that he can’t give her his heart again, he tries everything in his power to remain distant. However, his meddlesome sister-in-Law, who happens to be business partners with Carolyn, is intent on bringing them together. When she lets it slip that Carolyn is putting herself out there, Brody gets a severe case of the green-eyed monster and decides that Carolyn is to be his once more.

This book was very sweet. It had a lovely romance, a bossy and gorgeous cowboy, a stubborn female and a big sprawling family. It was an easy read, but it did lack pace and, for a shorter read, did seem to drag a little in places. I very much enjoyed the relationship building between the two lead characters. Carolyn had opened herself up to Brody in a way that she had with no one else. It hadn’t been easy to allow herself to trust him, as elements of her past had given her cause to be distrusting of everyone. When he left with no explanation, he destroyed any hope of her ever trusting people again. Brody did have his reasons, but he never explained them, which really hacked me off. The girl that he had been dating before Carolyn had fallen pregnant with his child, so he ran off to marry her. I applaud the sentiment, I got p*ssed off that he couldn’t have explained that to anyone and allowed them to move on. When he comes back a broken man, I understood that he wanted to protect Carolyn. He had loved her, she was perhaps the only woman that he had ever loved, and he wasn’t whole anymore, so he couldn’t give her what she deserved. Fantastic sentiment, totally crap that he couldn’t explain. Brody was so close-lipped I wanted to slap him. Carolyn, I understood. He hurt her, without explanation, came back and started sleeping with a complete slapper, and then was bordering on rude when he was in her presence. He deserved nothing from her, including justifications on her life choices. Having had friends do the dating website thing, I had to laugh at some of the things that happened as I identified with them completely. I did melt a little bit when Brody joined the dating website in an effort to woo her; he proved to me that he was redeemable after all. It was clear from the start that both were fighting a losing battle denying their feelings for each other, but it was also clear that a lot of discussion and bridge building would need to happen to make this a plausible HEA. There were no major surprises or plot twists in their story, but there was certainly enough meat to this story to keep the story moving.

The thread running through this story was the continuing relationship of Brody’s twin brother, Conner, and his wife Tricia. Tricia is pregnant and, as Brody and Connors mother died in childbirth, he is a very anxious daddy to be. I liked this element of the plot, it was mature, realistic and quite heart warming. I liked that their story didn’t stop with their HEA; I love series where we don’t ignore previous characters that we grown to know and love.

All in all an easy read with believable characters and a sweet love story. The character building was one of the strengths of this book and I enjoyed getting to know this tortured cowboy and his family.

The Creed family seems to think they both belong together, but Carolyn isn't so sure, so she joins a dating site to try and find some other options.

Well, I love me some cowboys so it only stood to reason that I would enjoy this novel. The plot was traditional but had good twists in both Brody and Carolyn's past, which made their characters deep and believable. I also enjoyed some of the minor characters, in particular Winston. I thought the big date Brody planned for Carolyn was one of the more romantic schemes I've read in a romance novel, that is until it went wrong.

The only thing I didn't like in the book was the "gypsy skirt." I had to Google what that was after it was mentioned a few times and when the author suggested it was too fancy for something other than a coronation at Buckingham Palace I had to laugh. The Googled images I pulled up were not appropriate for a coronation, and certainly not too fancy for a movie date like the author implied. I didn't care for the way it was described either, "It was composed of what seemed to be hundreds of ribbons and beads, and it swayed and shifted around her like a puff of glittering smoke, or shards of glass in a kaleidoscope." (p. 315). I don't even know what that means, but it doesn't sound attractive for a skirt.

Iffy fashion aside, including lots of black jeans, this was a good romance novel. I definitely enjoyed it and I won't hesitate to read anything by Miller in the future. The Creed Legacy will be published June 28th.(less)

I'd have to say that of the Creed Cowboys series, this was my favorite. I thoroughly enjoyed Brody, his humor and his inter-action with his twin, Conner. This is the first romance I've read in years, that being said, I'm pretty sure that this one belongs in the middle of a series. Based on the number of happy couples in the book, I would guess that there are at least two, if not three other books before this one.

I didn't find anything remarkable about this story, but it did what i think a romance is meant to do, it entertained me. The next time I get an urge to read a romance, I'll check out the other books by this author.

The stipends, which she funds from her writing and speaking earnings, enable women 25 years and older to improve their lot in life through education.
