I gave this three stars, because I personally wanted to give it two, but I think it probably deserves four. I know that for other people, especially the audience it's actually intended for (children/YA), it would be a great book, and they'd love it. I didn't really get into the book, and it's not the author's fault at all. It was just too easy a book for me to really enjoy. The bad guy was really bad, the good guys were really good, and even the character who switched sides made all the righ...more

I tried very hard to get into this book, but like Ink Heart it just didn't catch me. Something about the way Funke writes puts a distance between me and the story that just makes it impossible for me become fully engaged. The classic fantasy archetype of friends on a quest, tons of magical creatures, etc is common and this text hardly adds anything new to the field.

Funke writes with a wealth of detail that is occasionally distracting and over-done. Her characters feel 2D, lacking real depth ...more

Dragon Rider is a good dragon book that doesn't delve too deeply into dragon lore, preferring to stand on it's own as more of an adventure tale involving dragons. The premise of the book is that the lair of a group of dragons is threatened and one of their own - Firedrake - is the only one willing and able to set out and explore the scary world to find a better place for his clan to live: a mysterious place called the Rim of Heaven.

Like many such books when the protagonist steps beyond the s...more

A gray rat goes scurrying through the forest on a mission. She must find Firedrake and warn him that humans are coming to the dragons' valley. Just because Firedrake is one of the youngest dragons in his herd, it doesn't mean he isn't one of the bravest. When their old leader Slatebeard told all the dragons to fly away to The Rim of Heaven, only Firedrake actually believed it still exists and set out to find it. Along with him, Firedrake takes Sorrel (a brownie who looks like a girl-shaped cat),...more

I was hardly aware this was a translation as I began listening to this engaging book. A good bit of the magic came from the reader, Brendan Fraser. I'd put it on my ipod, and at first I wondered who could be that talented, sexy, multi-voiced reader? He changes accents on a dime, from a Scottish brogue to Texan drawl, squeezing out the accentless Hollywood narrator voice all in the same breath.

A dragon, a brownie, and a boy set out on a quest to find the home of the silver dragons. They a...more

this is the first book i read, telling that dragons were not such devilish things. Instead, they were sacred animals and could bring fortune.

Silver dragons, they live by drinking the moonlight at night and sleep at day. Their life were threatened because humans try to occupy their habitat, so they needed to find a new place to live. Not just a new place, but a place where they could live in peace, a place which is far from human and threats and the enchanted dragon, called golden dragon.

Even with a dragon on the cover and in the story, this book was unimaginative and predictable and dull. If the dragon got strength from the moon, he would've occasionally had to fly during the day, and CF never mentioned what they did during a new moon. Why were all the people so excited to see a dragon rider, but they hardly cared about the dragon himself? It didn't flow well and fit together as it could have. The dragon society and lifestyle isn't well thought out either. IMHO, the dragon...more

This book is very well written is one of my favorite books written Cornelia Funke. My favorite thing about this book is that it actually feels like you are in the story and one of the many companions. This book is about a dragon and a brownie (a lager squirle like creature) who set out to find a place where the other dragons can hide. This book rises and falls so many times you can't even tell where the rising and the falling actionis. Also, my favorite thing about this book is that it is about d...more

It took me forever to finish this book! I thought some of the ideas were very clever, but I never had that "ooh, I like this so much that I must finish this book now" feeling. In fact, I started and finished many other books while still in the middle of this one. On the other hand, many of the students in my school have enjoyed this book a lot. I recommend it to students who are not quite ready for fantasy stories at higher reading levels like Harry Potter or Artemis Fowl, but still wa...more

I honestly can't remember too much of this book, but I do know that I liked it a moderate amount. The dragons are in hiding and people are steadily encroaching on their land, so the main dragon character sets out on an adventure to find dragon mecca. He brings with him a brownie and the titular "dragon rider" - an orphaned human boy. I like Cornelia Funke, she's a good writer and has a vivid imagination, but this and The Thief Lord don't live up to the goodness that is Inkheart/Inks

I read this in school and had to finish it one weekend for homework. My friend, Heidi invited me over to sleepover and we forgot all about reading the book! I was staying over for the weekend and we were in BIG TROUBLE! We went to the library and got the book. We were trying to get a really good grade on the test and made a study guide and it was soo embarrasing cuz everyone was like why did you do that? We thought we had to! It was really funny! This is a pretty good book!

This book was fairly good, with a slow-moving but interesting plot.
If I had to be intellectual about this book, I would say that the four stars I gave it symbolize my vanity and self-centerdness, because a rare occurence took place in this book: my name appeared, spelled correctly! Those with unusual names (knock, knock, Ortal and Scherezade [or King Richard Hades Khan the Ist, which is quite a mouthful!]...) can sympathize.

Truth in advertising...I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated by Brendan Fraser. It is no secret to fans of Cornelia Funke that she adores Brendan Fraser--and the feeling is mutual since he has been involved in several of the "after book" media interpretations of Funke's works. (He will be in the Inkheart movie.)
Fraser did an excellent job of reading/interpreting this action packed story. Now I am a fan too.

I got this book when it first came out, but they spent all the money on the fold-out map instead of the paper stock, so the pages have a bluish tint to it, which makes it hard to read. They've corrected the problem since then (printed endpapers and better paper stock), so what I have is a rare edition, but still . . . Because I love Funke so much, I'm considering trying to read this again.

This was a really fun book. I listened to about half of it on audio cd on a road trip to visit a friend in NC. The reader was Brendan Fraser (of George of the Jungle Fame) and he did an excellent job. The book itself was really good. It was a good kids fantasy novel. It wasn't trying to be Harry Potter which is refreshing in today's market.

This is my favorite dragon book of all time. I luv this book. i am a little confused about the brownies, though. In other books that i have read, brownies were little faries without wings. In this book, though, brownies are catlike creatures that stand on two feet, luv mushrooms, and talk. Tell me if you figure it out.

I loved this book. This is a great kids book, that I really enjoyed reading. There is a bad guy that is a bit scary, nothing too overwhelming; but he is always thwarted and sometimes in very fun creative ways. This book covers a lot of mythilogical creatures and some humans who get to interact with them.

Very exciting and fun kids books. This one does dwell on eastern religion, however just slightly, and is a good conversation starter. I would recommend HIGHLY getting this on tape with the reader being Brendon Fraiser. He does an incredible job at bring to life the diverse characters and doing them well.
