After listening on Audio to the first book in the ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ series I couldn’t wait to read the second. The first book was funny, magical and full of adventure, and this one also delivers all of those things. I love the soundtrack and special effect sounds on the audio book, it really sets the scene and makes the story more exciting! In the first book there were so many laugh out loud moments but I didn’t feel like there were as many in this one. I still really love the banter betwee ...more

Like the first Skulduggery Pleasant novel, Playing With Fire is an enigma to me. I know that Derek Landy was aiming to write a children's fiction novel. I know that children's fiction at its best should appeal to a variety of age groups - that it should not be static, unforgiving or patronising. However, the enigma is that Landy's novel is one which is, fractured and unstable. I welcome the use of a fascinating female lead (I call her the lead as, through her perspective, we see various changes

Woah. This series. I REALLY REALLY LIKE IT, OKAY? I may flail....but I will attempt logicalness. Because I am kind like that.

I listened to this on audio and I can't recommend it enough! It's narrated by a dude with an Irish accent and...can I say: BEST ACCENT IN THE WORLD?!! It was wonderful to listen too and the voices for different characters were perfection. It also went really fast. I listened to it all in just a few days.

These books are downright hilarious. If I can only ask for two thing

Wow - What Fun!

Moving forward in her apprenticeship to Skulduggery, Valkrie Cain (aka Stephanie Edgley) has made great strides, but has a great deal left to learn. Skulduggery's old nemesis, Baron Vengeous and his band of legendary monsters, known as the Grotesguery are determined to release the Faceless Ones and destroy the world. Of course, the oh' so cool, ultra chic, quick witted wizard stands in their way.

The story takes off when the Baron escapes from what was reportedly an inescapable pr
If books were food, Skulduggery Pleasant would be a chocolate-covered gummy bear.
Allow me to elaborate. At first, the idea of a chocolate-covered gummy bear sounds weird and a little gross. But in reality, although it is weird, it is completely delicious. In the same way, the idea of Skulduggery Pleasant is weird and unappealing: the hero is a skeleton sorcerer. Gross. But once you taste it, you discover how delightfully fun it is. Don't get me wrong, it isn't very good for you. In fact, consume

Playing With Fire By Derek Landy
Can you imagine being a person with special powers having to fight crime every day until your life is done or if you lose it in a fight? If you do then you can imagine how Valkrie feels wanting to be like all the other kids but just knowing she can’t. Playing with fire by Derek Landy is one of the best books you will ever read about a powerful girl. Valkrie is a girl with special powers to stop crime. She can’t likes being with her best fr

I enjoyed this story but not nearly as much as the first book and not nearly as much as I'd hoped. While Landy's talent as a writer is still evident, and I still love the characters of Skulduggery and Valkyrie (and some of the new ones are very interesting! I think my "favorite" is Billy Ray Sanguine), I felt this story lacked the sparkle and wit of the first one. It focused more on action sequences and less on character development and dialogue. The action sequences are well written as

I'm excited to be able to read this series! The first book was excellent and I have Brooks from One Piece pop into my head. I find it so humorous, because to me I can positively say that this wouldn't seem strange to me...

For some reason it seems that the villains are funnier than the protagonists. You're definitely in for a good laugh while reading this installment.
Another thrilling adventure with Skulduggery, and a delicious sequel to the first :-) More freaky bad guys than you can shake a stick at, lots of action and magic, and plenty of humor made this another really fun ride. I'm looking forward to the third!
Stephanie Edgley has been having a rough time as of late.

After her uncle’s death, twelve-year-old Stephanie meets Skulduggery Pleasant, a fast-talking, snappy dressing detective who just happens to be a walking, talking skeleton. He tells Stephanie that she is directly descendant from the Ancients, people who used control magic.

Under Skulduggery’s tutelage, Stephanie’s skills have grown. She is an Elemental, able to control Air, Earth, Water and Fire to her will. While still not as skilled as Sk
I love these stories and I love the narrator! He breaths so much life and character into each role that it's a feast for the ears!

One of the best things about this series is that the characters continue to grow with each installment. Yes, there are the adventures that are self-contained to each book, but the character arcs play on the tales that went before (as do the overall situations of the magical world). Thus, the tales never feel repetitive, and I'm always excited to see what Valkyrie will

Stephanie Edgley is back for more adventure with the walking, talking, flame towing, crime fighting skeleton detective Skuldiggery Pleasant. Stephanie's magical powers are getting stronger and she puts them to good use as they battle Baron Vengeous and his minions who are calling the Faceless Ones back to the world by bringing the Grotesquery to life. High energy and fast paced Stephanie, Skulduggery and their crime fighting cohort once again thwart the evil plan, but their adventure isn't over ...more

When I first got the book, I didn't want to put it down. Yet there was something different about it… something I couldn’t put my finger on. But we’ll get to that. First, the summary: Playing With Fire picks up one year after the first book, with Stephanie (now going by her taken name, which I won’t spoil for those who haven’t read the first yet) becoming better and better at what she does (though still the rookie). But Baron Vengeous, one of Mevolent’s top three soldiers (next to Serpine and Lor ...more

Reading this immediately after the first in the series, Skulduggery Pleasant, is interesting: it highlights both some flaws and some developments.

In terms of plot, there's a sense of déjà vu from the first book: a general from the previous war escapes from prison; he sets about acquiring an artefact to bring back ancient Gods, the Faceless Ones; he is defeated on the cusp of success.

The baddie this time is Baron Vengeous (again letting us see Landy's almost Dickensian playfulness with his char

Have you heard of Skulduggery Pleasant? You really should have by now. No? Well now's your chance.

Skulduggery is, well, there's no kind way to say it, decidedly different. You see, Skulduggery is a skeleton detective. That's right, a collection of bones walking around with no skin, muscles or organs. Oh, and his head, it's not even his own. He won the skull he's wearing in a poker game.

Skulduggery is the brainchild of author Derek Landy, whose first book about the skel

Skulduggery Pleasant was a great romp--witty, sharp, entertaining. Sadly, I can't give its sequel any more than 3 stars.

Why? 3 big reasons:
1] It lacks the snappy repartee that made the first book so much fun. The original was reminiscient of watching Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn go at it verbally onscreen. Tremendously clever and fun. It's here in the sequel, but only just so. Pages and pages in between, and I missed it.

2] The high percentage of story time spent fighting villains gre

Playing with Fire, the second in the Skulduggery Pleasant series, is not as dynamic as the first installment.

The dialogue isn’t as snappy. The plot, while fast-moving, isn’t as cohesive. In addition, the main theme - preventing the return of the old gods known as the Faceless Ones - reminds me of Simon R. Green’s Secret Histories series. This last is almost a moot point since Landry’s target audience is the younger set; they won't make the connection. But since I’m an adult who reads heaps of U

Baron Vengeous has escaped from a Russian prison, and is hunting for Lord Vile's shadow armor and the resting place of the Grotesquery, a Frankenstein’s monster-like creation, that is made of various deadly pieces of magical creatures. If the Baron manages to resurrect the Grotesquery during the lunar eclipse, then it will open a portal through which the Faceless Ones can return to destroy the world. Here are the things that ruin this book for me:

1.) The banter between Valkyrie and Skulduggery is absolutely annoying. When it started out, it was funny, tolerable. But the fact that every single sentence that passes forth between the two is laced with sarcasm and usually devoid of seriousness is a pain. The dialog between them just feels static, like there's something straining the relationship. It also doesn't help that Skulduggery manages to pull out some seriously terrible jokes.

2.) Characte
Very fun, once again. Not quite the magical charm of the first book, with all of the exciting discoveries, but still lots of suspense and humor. The reader is still great, but Skulduggery's voice wasn't quite as charmingly ironic as in the first book. I'd still highly recommend it as an audiobook, the book is so easy to visualize and the production and reader are top rate. Plus it really helps to capture the sense of being in Ireland in a way that reading on the page couldn't. Unfortunately, as ...more

A whole lot of fun - great dialogue, kick-arse characters and an action-packed plot. Most entertaining indeed.
The style and characters were just as entertaining. I found a plot a bit lacking though. Still very readable and great fun.
Once again a work of utter brilliance . . . Is there anything more I need add??
Ok so this is not going to be the Next Harry Potter Series for me...and here I was so hopeful. Oh bother! It is still funny but I don't think I can take another preteen with attitude, not having to deal with my six year old and his own little preteen attitude. This book sticks very closely to the first. One of the undead enemies is trying to raise the faceless ones using bad guys that are totally undefeatable. Against all odds Skulduggery and Company manage to overcome the bad guys. Just as expected.Impressive to the very last detail.

Stephanie, now going by the name of Valkyrie,is officially the new assistant and student of the skeleton detective.New enemies, stronger than the ones in the previous book, make their appearance, and the duo is all-too-willing to jump in action once again.

Cunning, witty and sarcastic, this charming long-dead detective and his equally smart partner are sure to make you unable to decide whether to laugh or gasp from all the suspence.

Let me say this- You'd be hard pressed to find a book as well written, well-thought out, humorous, with well-developed, relatable characters and a world as fascinating as that in Skulduggery Pleasant. I'm not joking here, or giving praise where it is not due. Playing with Fire is one of the best books I've read. It has plenty of action, plenty of witty jokes, and a gripping plot. What more could I ask?

Valkyrie Cain is no longer the stuck up girl once known as Stephanie Edgley. She is smart, cap
