Anyone and everyone should be familiar with the names Charles M. Schulz, Lee Mendelson, and Bill Melendez. Instantly when you hear these names you think of Charlie Brown. Yes, the loveable guy that everyone can remember and held out hope that one day Charlie would actually kick that football that Lucy was always holding for him. I can remember watching the television special of The Great Pumpkin with Charlie Brown and the gang. It was entertaining. Although, I can not blame Linus for being scare ...more

If I can already review a Christmas mystery, I can certainly review a Halloween book. The actual title is It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: The Making of a Television Classic by Lee Mendelson with Reminiscences by Bill Melendez. Almost five decades after the television special first aired, it's still a family favorite drawing seven million viewers. Now, executive producer Lee Mendelson joins with the original Peanuts animator Bill Melendez to tell stories about cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, ...more

While their friends and siblings go out for "Tricks or Treats" on Halloween night, Linus and Sally sit in a pumpkin patch and await the arrival of the Great Pumpkin.

First off, I'll let my atheistic nature point out that It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a wonderful parable about the utter foolishness of faith. Think I'm wrong? Replace the Great Pumpkin with Santa Claus and Halloween with Christmas and the subtle and deeper meaning of this justifiably cherished classic seasonal special (my

Snoopy. Linus waiting in the pumpkin patch. Lucy screaming "AUGH! my lips touched dog lips!" And Charlie Brown's "I got a rock." What else can I say? It's a classic, whether on TV or in book form. Perfect Halloween reading!

It’s the Great Pumpkin is a quick read that is fun for all ages and fans - big or small.

It offers a great and thoughtful look into the conception and making of this television classic.

It's Charles Schulz and Charlie Brown. How can you go wrong? And what more does a review need to say?

It's the Great Pumpkin!

I love Linus' faith in all things. He has got to be the most optimistic character in the entire Peanuts bunch! He has such optimism that everything is going to work out okay. I had never heard of the Great Pumpkin until the Peanuts but I liked how it was tied back to Snoopy. I did not like how Charlie Brown only received rocks. One positive thing from the story was Lucy lighting up on her brother. It was very nice of her getting extra candy for him and caring him inside f

You’ll want IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN for the full, illustrated script. Or, maybe the sheet music. Or, maybe to find out why Snoopy took on the role of the Red Barron. Or, maybe to read the interviews. Forget it—you’ll want IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN because it is IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN.

Where did Snoopy’s Red Barron come from:

My childhood memories of Peanuts (to me it was simply Snoopy cartoons) was A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition. I remember watching the Christmas special all the time live on TV and possibly recorded on VHS. A few years ago, I got some hand-me-down books and one of which was It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. I'm sorry, but I didn't know there was a Halloween special as well... Now that I do, I'm fully entertained and delighted to get my hands on It's the Great Pumpkin: The ...more

Such a wonderful story for children. We read this book to get in the Halloween spirit, and it did just that. Reading the book, you could just picture the cartoon and all of the characters talking in their voices, like Lucy with her dramatic, sassy attitude! Great read that displays the well known friendships this gang possesses and some truly terrific Halloween festivities and traditions.

I've never really understood this part of Schulz's Peanuts, the part about Linus's unrelenting faith towards the Great Pumpkin. But I'm sure there's something about the seeming silliness of it all that is deeper than what I'm seeing. There's something about Lucy's waking up in the middle of the night to look for her brother who is not in his bed because he has fallen asleep waiting and shivering in the pumpkin patch, and, without a word, her bringing him home and tucking him to bed; there is som ...more

The classic book that follows all of your favorite peanuts characters at Halloween. Linus waits in the pumpkin patch for the great pumpkin to show up. The rest of the gang trick or treat and get Halloween candy. It is a short and fun read for any age students. It would be an excellent way to incorporate some fun Halloween activity or just read when you have a few spare minutes in between transitioning classes or before dismissal.

My son and I explored the app version of this story on my phone, which was hugely enjoyable. The narration is done by Peter Robbins, who provided the voice of Charlie Brown in the 1966 special. The illustrations are interactive and there are activities hidden throughout the pages to complete in order to earn a prize. There is a bookmark that can be dragged down to jump to a particular page, and Vince Guaraldi's wonderful jazz soundtrack plays in the background. The best part is that the entire s ...more

I always have mixed feelings about Peanuts. Someone please tell me why everyone is so @$&*%() mean to Charlie Brown? Other than that, I think they're clever. Great pumpkins and concert pianists and book reports on Peter Rabbit that remind us all now of Robin Hood.

As wonderful as "The Great Pumpkin" is in its classic television form, this is a fun read and gives more descriptive information that makes the classic come to life. The story of Linus' quest to finally meet "The Great Pumpkin" has always been one of my favorites.

I enjoyed this story, but it's not my favorite Halloween book. I definitely loved seeing all the familiar characters (who doesn't love Charlie Brown?!), but I thought it was a big on the long side so I won't be able to read it to Caleb for a few years.

This adaptation takes the perfection that was the 1966 Peanuts TV special and turns it into an exceptionally boring story. No humor or poignancy. The only redeeming characteristic of the book is that the illustrator got Charles Schulz's illustrations right.

Yeah, another cool Charlie Brown book. This one features the Great Pumpkin (GP). At the outset of this slender volume, Linus is writing a note: "Dear Great Pumpkin, I am looking foreward to your arrival on Halloween night." Snoopy and Lucy thought it was foolhardy, whereas Sally bought into the idea. . . . The nature of GP? Lines says that "Each year on Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere and flied through the air with his pack of ...more

Charles Monroe Schulz was an American cartoonist, whose comic strip Peanuts proved one of the most popular and influential in the history of the medium, and is still widely reprinted on a daily basis.

Schulz's first regular cartoons, Li'l Folks, were published from 1947 to 1950 by the St. Paul Pioneer Press; he first used the name Charlie Brown for a character there, although he applied the name in

“Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He's gotta pick this one. He's got to. I don't see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there's not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as far as the eye can see.” 10 likes
