I honestly would not want to be a mother in the fictional book world because they always seem to die. Their life expectancy is very short after giving birth to a heroine in a novel. Women are supposed to live longer than men but if you go by all the books then really the men have one up on women. I think sometimes the death of a mother can contribute to a story. I was so ready to love this book. Ever since I first read the premise- unicorns, enchanted tapestry, a young nobleman pulled roughly from his time, and thrust into Tessa’s- I was intrigued. Ever since I first read the premise- unicorns, enchanted tapestry, a young nobleman pulled roughly from his time, and thrust into Tessa’s- I was intrigued. I will say I was worried I wouldn’t like it, that it might not live up to my expectations and could end up being a flop, but I was pleasantly surprised, because I actually did like it. In fact, I loved it. It doesn’t garner a five star rating, but there was a certain enchantment within the story, that while it may have taken a while to really capture me, still kept me intrigued. The reason for the four star is because the writing wasn’t amazing, and the execution was sometimes a little weak. But as the story went on, and the intrigue deepened, I became captivated and eager to see what happened.

Guibord created a nicely woven tale, intermixing fantasy, myth, and the middle ages into the modern world. I really liked the fantasy appeal and the taste of the medieval ages (which, I think, is my favorite time period in a book. Which may be partly why I liked this book so much). I didn’t love all of it completely, there were times when the enchantment slipped a little, and I found the flow of the writing lacking, but nearing the end, the enchantment thickened, and I became captivated. Granted, it’s not the best written book, it will be a hit or miss read with people. Some people will find frustrating things in the book, but nothing really frustrated me. I really liked the story and the plot, and while it may not be completely void of ya clichés, it did have it's originality. And there was no love triangle, GASP!! What?! you cry. A young adult book with no love triangle? Impossible. No, you read right, there is only one boy, ONLY ONE!, and I’m so glad of it. A second boy --her best friend that would suddenly decide he loves her and can’t stand the thought of any other boy coming between them when this new hot boy suddenly appears and sweeps her off her feet-- would have ruined the story. Warped would have turned into a clichéd ya book with no originality, and the main bulk of the story would be focused on the weary love triangle instead of the actual plot. I’m so glad that Guibord didn’t do this. Thank you!

Tessa wasn’t my favorite heroine, but I still found her likable. And the romance between her and Will was sweet, and at the end, melted my heart :) And while I’m there, the ending! (view spoiler) I laughed and swooned, and loved it, and read it again!

I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a sequel. It sets up for one, there’s still a mystery, and it just doesn’t seem like Guibord wants to stop Tessa’s and Will’s story. And may I say, please don’t! I would love a sequel, please write one! I loved Warped. It isn’t a fantastic, brilliant read, but I still enjoyed reading it, and I don’t want it to be the end. I also thought this could make a cool movie. *wink wink*(less)

I loved this book!! The story was so unique to anything I've read and the characters were simply fun and fantastic! Tessa's life is one that I wouldn't mind having myself, either, she lives in a bookstore for a start, has a completely rockin best friend, and then of course there's Will..*swoon* So hot! Will captivated me from the start, I'm already a sucker for the accents, but the old fashioned air about him and mysterious way in which he came into Tessa's life..Loved Him!

Reading Warped was like eating the best kind of comfort food; it left me feeling cozy and happy. When I was in upper elementary and middle school I loved reading fantasies of all kinds, but especially stories with unicorns. This isn’t a unicorn story, of course, but it still holds the elements of fantasy that I love. I need to give major kudos to Tessa and Opal’s friendship. Opal is Tessa’s quirky best friend, but what I love most about her is that she never doubts Tessa. How many of you can honestly say that if you told your best friend “Hey, you know that unicorn in my tapestry? Well, it’s actually a guy that just jumped out and landed in my room” she would totally believe you and come straight over? Yep, that’s what I thought. I don’t think too many of us are blessed with a friend who is so loyal and, well, awesome. I know my best friend loves me, but I think she’d come over to make sure I didn’t have a concussion or something… Anyway, Opal is simply awesome and I love how she and Tessa interact with one another.

Of course I’m a fan of Will and an even bigger fan of him and Tessa together! Tessa doesn’t admit right away that she’s attracted to him, but I certainly knew she was! Their banter is enjoyable, but I did feel bad for Will at times. He’s coming from a different century, so while I giggled when Tessa would tease him for things he said or sarcasm he didn’t get, I felt bad because it’s not like he’s dim-witted or anything. However, this dynamic of their relationship made them more believable and lovable. I was definitely rooting for them!

My students who enjoy fantasy will definitely enjoy Warped, but I also suspect that those who like mythology will as well. Maurissa introduces the story with the Norn, otherwise known as the Fates. I like how she weaves them into the story (pun intended? I think so!). Their presence doesn’t overpower the story, but they add an element of suspense and intrigue–especially at the end!

I can’t recommend this debut novel enough. My students interviewed Maurissa in my Students Want to Know feature, and while she did say she isn’t planning a second book, I wouldn’t mind a sequel one bit!

Warped is a beautifully written debut novel, it's a captivating fantasy with a fairy-tale-esque feel.

Initially we are introduced to the Norns.... or the Sisters of Fate if you will. Weaving together the fabric of life. Decided when your particular thread of life has fullfilled it's purpose. The Sisters had several strands stolen and they will stop at nothing to get them back!

Although I really love a storyline that is centered around the three Norns/Fates who live at the foot of the world tree Yggdrasil, I didn't like the way the story proceeded. It's just too straight and there are no real surprises in this story at all: one got the ill-fated lovers, the best friend, the sympathetic father and late mother, the evil witch/hag with her assistant and a little bit of timetravel mixed together with some divine and mysterious figures!

This has got to be one of the most intriguing and original YA fiction books that I've read. While the genre is buzzing with books about vampires, werewolves, fallen angels, dystopia settings, Maurissa Guibord has distinguished herself from the other authors out there with her debut novel on tapestry, magic and unicorns. As I expand my reading repertoire more and more each year, it's getting harder and harder to judge young adult books. Some actually rise to standards held in general fiction with superb writing, masterful storytelling, and stellar characterization. However. . .not many manage this great feat. It's very difficult to take an idea, no matter how wonderful or innovative, and shape it into a novel that keeps every reader engrossed. Sadly, this is not that novel. Some actually rise to standards held in general fiction with superb writing, masterful storytelling, and stellar characterization. However. . .not many manage this great feat. It's very difficult to take an idea, no matter how wonderful or innovative, and shape it into a novel that keeps every reader engrossed. Sadly, this is not that novel. If you're expecting something to grip you and/or astound you. . .well, turn and walk away from this book. Go read Darkfever or Madapple for some really good brain food. Warped, on the other hand, is pure brain candy: not really good for you because it doesn't have much substance or flavor but you eat it up anyway only to end up with a stomach ache later. (Fun analogy, eh?)

Before I make you think I read Warped just to bash it, I actually really wanted to love the book. (I even bought it, for goodness sake!) It had such an interesting premise: a girl (Tessa) touches a tapestry with a unicorn on it and frees the boy (Will) who was trapped inside of it. Once I started reading it, though. . .the only thing that spurred me on to finish the novel was my own force of will. I guess part of the problem was this: I don't often like love determined by fate, reincarnation, and/or soul mates in fiction. (The only exception to the rule for me is L.J. Smith's Night World series since at least the characters seem to FIT together in some ways. Here, I didn't feel any chemistry other than curiosity, fate workings, lust, attraction, and yet more lust.) It just doesn't work for me since I *know* that the best kind of love is built by time and experience. And the romance here is exactly what I despise: girls meets boy, boy is handsome, girl falls for boy because of that and supernatural means alone. Umm. . .excuse me, YA authors, the kind of love that teenage girls will find out in the real world doesn't work by those rules! What examples are you setting for teens reading these books by showing such relationships? I could understand if the boy and girl were connected by fate but fell for each other after conversation and time together -- but a few hours spread across a few days? NUH-UH. Doesn't happen -- and, if it does, it doesn't often last. The love-at-first-sight kind of love, or anything resembling it, just isn't a good thing to put in teenage minds: it gives them hopeless ideals and unreachable standards. (Please, girls, read a book where a girl FIGHTS against her fate/destiny instead -- like Unearthly!)

Another problem I had was that, as much page time as Tessa and Will had apart and together, I never really felt that I got to know them. It's as if there were a barrier throughout the entire story keeping me from the parts of them that really mattered and would have appealed to me. I get that Tessa lost her mother and still grieves for her -- but did I feel it? No. The same with Will: sure, he has A LOT to be angsty and brooding about, but can't he muster up a bit of personality here and there? I never got a feel from him other than handsomeness, arrogance, haughtiness, and love/lust for Tessa. The characters just rubbed me wrong throughout the entire book, and it made the story very bitter and irksome to me.

The plot itself of the sisters of Fate and their fate threads struck me as rather. . .lacking in actual execution. Sure, the threads of fate as a story tool is great -- but couldn't there be a bit more depth here and there? (It could have leaned towards mythic fiction territory -- or maybe it would have been better suited to a fantasy setting instead of a modern one.) As much as the story liked to veer towards being sinister, again I didn't really feel it. I felt detached from everything. Not a good thing, really, when you're reading a 300-page book and every page seems a chore in and of itself.

I will say this to Warped's credit: for all the distress it caused me, it ended well. Yes, I was happy to finish it just to say I had -- but at least I got more personality from the characters in the last few pages. If only I had gotten more of that for the 300 pages PRECEDING them, this review may have come out much differently. The ending just wasn't enough to save the book in my eyes since even happily ever afters need to have a lot more struggle and strife leading up to them for them to really count.

Sadly, I think I am getting off the Warped train at this stop. I won't be along for the ride with the sequel that is sure to come.(less)

I bought this book because of the great reviews on Amazon (when I ordered it, it had only 4 and 5 star reviews, which is pretty much unheard of) and the stunning cover. It had an interesting premise, even if I don't normally like time travel or "reincarnation" stories. But so many YA novels are too similar these days so I was willing to try something new.

Overall the plot is good. It's unlike anything I've ever read before. It seemingly has it all, a strong heroine, a dashing hero, a twisted villain, and a looming threat in the form of three seemingly divine sisters. The writing wasn't the best in my opinion. It was inconsistent, it went from action to dull back to action only to revert to dull again. Some parts were real page turners and I'd get excited thinking the story was finally going to turn around only to be let down again when the action ended and I was left with the same below average character. It very much reads like a YA novel, which isn't a bad thing, younger reader I'm sure will devour this up. I know I would have if I were 6 or 7 years younger. I can really see my 15 year old self falling for the story and its British hero. And since this is a 'clean' novel, no curse words and only a couple of kisses, it is a novel I'd feel comfortable giving to my younger female family members.

My real problem with this novel was the characters. When I closed the cover Tessa and Will were still both blurry figures. They were not developed enough for me to have a sense of them being real or unforgettable. They were some what generic and cookie cutter for my taste. The villain was very good, I actually found myself really liking her. She may have a twisted way of thinking but she had a very sympathetic back story. The 'norn' were very interesting and I only wish the author would have expanded on them a little more.

The mythical elements of the story were very enjoyable and unique but, despite the good I still had to make myself plow through this novel. It typically doesn't take me more than 2 or 3 days to read a book twice this length but it took me two weeks just to moan and groan my way through this. And honestly the only reason I finished was because I wanted to move on to something else and I knew if I took a break this book would rest on my shelf unfinished for all eternity.

I gave it 3 stars because I know there is an audience out there for it, it isn't a bad novel, just not for me. (less)

’ve wanted to read “Warped’ for awhile and finally reached it on my to-be-read pile. After reading it I wish I would have got to it sooner. This book is absolutely fresh. Cute. Great Mythology and modern day cross over. Loved the weaving and thread-like stuff theme, which only left me confused as to why the title was not even remotely weave or thread related. I think 'Unraveled' would have been a much better fit for this book. At least the cover art fit the theme well. Warped was a 3.5 star for me. I liked the idea of the Norn and the three hooded creepy sisters being the weaver of our lives. Tessa was annoying. I literally wanted to jump inside the story and hit her head with her tennis racket. I mean, couldn’t she see that Gray Lily had to be close to someone to take away their thread. BEST THING: Okay, this is kinda weird, but I LOVED the Tessa's real name - Tesseract. I love the Madeleine L'Engle books and I thought that this fit so well, especially with all of the time-warp aspects.

Unusual book! I enjoyed the storyline. When a mysterious tapestry arrives with a carton of books purchased by her father at auction, the adventures begin. Tessa Brody unknowingly releases the spirit of Will de Chaucy, a 16th century nobleman who had been trapped in the tapestry by an evil old woman. This book was pretty awesome. You have to get out of the traditional YA paranormal though, and let yourself be taken in this new kind of fairy tale paranormal. The characters are instantly likeable and the plot follows through till the end. Since Warped is mostly plot driven, the character's don't exactly evolve so much as cope. Disappointing. I had high hopes for this books, and it started off reasonably well. However, it had a huge (boring) saggy middle and too much of the plot required that I suspend disbelief too much.

The dialogue was forced and corny. I think that certain elements were supposed to be funny, but they ended up just being stupid. For example… A five hundred year old crone tries to use modern facial cream and hair weaves to improve her appearance. Uh… Yeah.

The main area in which I feel there's room for improvement is the whole romance with Will. Basically, it felt kinda forced to me. There's this whole cool fantasy plot, and naturally the guy who gets pulled through time to Tessa's room is unspeakably gorgeous, but he and Tessa fall in love based on very little interaction. The main area in which I feel there's room for improvement is the whole romance with Will. Basically, it felt kinda forced to me. There's this whole cool fantasy plot, and naturally the guy who gets pulled through time to Tessa's room is unspeakably gorgeous, but he and Tessa fall in love based on very little interaction. Apparently they're tied to one another because of Tessa's past life . . . in which, again, they really didn't know each other. Basically what we do know is that Will is hot, proud, and brave, and did I mention he's hot, and that Tessa likes to spend the odd paragraph just thinking about how hot he is. (I'm sorry, but that reminded me a little of Twilight.)

I'm also a bit twitchy about this because "proud" in these cases always seems to slide into "arrogant," which, amazingly, I don't find attractive. Will's generally a pretty nice guy, but there's definitely a lot of the Tessa-collapsing-against-his-chest dynamic here, which makes me roll my eyes a bit.

I like that Gray Lily actually tries to rationalize and say that she's not the villain. I wasn't expecting it, and found it interesting.

There's an interesting background bit where Tessa claims not to believe in fate/destiny because her mom died in a pointless car accident. It's a cool idea, though I feel it could have been stronger if references to it were spread out a bit more - more numerous, but more subtle.

This is true of a number of subplots. For example, when Tessa's dad's girlfriend Alicia has her brother come visit, there are two paragraphs on the event. One of them says, "Tessa found out that Alicia was inspired to go into prosthetics because of Ed, who had lost his leg in the Gulf War. So much for her image of Alicia as an over-achieving, money-hungry CEO." My response is, "Is that what she thought of Alicia? I could tell she wasn't all that big on Alicia, but since we've really seen very little of the poor woman . . ." So, basically issues of telling instead of showing.

The Norn are pretty neat. Also, while I knew the ring was somehow the key, and kind of wanted to bash Tessa over the head for not noticing a big honking gemstone that not only appears every time Gray Lily steals a thread, and is mentioned by Hugh in direct connection with the process, but IS A FREAKING RING IN A FANTASY BOOK, and YOU DO NOT IGNORE THOSE, I definitely didn't see the splinter-in-amber thing coming. Warped opens with Tessa and her dad at an auction house bidding on some books and what seems like a random tapestry. After winning the bid she starts to examine the tapestry and the book that was wrapped in it and her life takes a sudden plunge for the strange as she starts seeing visions and having dreams of a different time.

This book is very simple, but it's great in its simplicity. The plot is well thought out, the two main characters are well rounded. Basically the book is a great quick read that will leave a smile on your face. You can't guess what's going to happen next, but there now big shockers. It's a great book to read over again. Plus the guy when described is very good-looking( HOT!!!!). =) This book has great writing, some of the scenes you can't help but laugh at.
