This is a cute and enjoyable read. Written from the perspective of 12 year old Josh, "Once Upon A Summer" covers the events that take place in his family during one summer and autumn.

Josh's parents died when he was a baby, but he has his Grandpa, great-uncle Charlie, and Aunt Louisa to take care of him. Although he sometimes laments the fact that he has no memories of his parents, Josh is very happy with his family and doesn't want anything to change. So when Josh's Great-Grandfather comes to li...more

This was such a sweet book. I loved the fact that it was written from the perspective of a 12 year old boy. It was a nice change. You see the world through his eyes and it kind of took me back to the way I viewed the world at 12, even though this book takes place in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Joshua is a twelve-year old boy who lives with his 18 year-old aunt, his grandfather and his great-uncle and later, his great-grandfather. Joshua loves his little family and when he discovers that his gran...more

This was a really fun, really tender book. I laughed out loud several times while listening. Josh has a really comfortable head to live in as he tells his story. He really makes you understand what he's feeling. I liked how this book brought God into it, too--and how it wasn't a bam! I believe sort of thing. How Josh really had to struggle with his feelings and belief and come to know God for himself. And I liked how it didn't feel preachy at all, or at least not to me. It was more of a personal...more

I did enjoy this book. The main themes were faith in God, family and community, finding fullfillment and joy in men's/women's roles, along with the love and value of hard work, and the beauty of the earth and what each season brings for us. Harvest time was Josh's favorite season. It reiterated for me that God allows some things to happen for our own growth, that we may blossom like the petunias that have been exposed to rain, sun, and bees for their own growth and good. Anyone who believes in G...more

I enjoyed the storyline of this book, but the text was often awkward by the attempt to write it as the characters would have spoken. While it might be historically accurate, it made the reading of it limp along and took away from the story itself. As for the plot, it was funny and heartwarming, sometimes sad but mostly uplifting. It had a strong message about the important of religion and family which is missing from many books these days. Worth the read.

Yet another series. The others I have read by Janette Oke have all been written with a female as the main character. This series is told by Josh and it was a good change. He lives with his Aunt Lou (all of maybe 20) and his Uncle and Grandfather. This book talks about experiences in his youth, meeting his great grandfather and the internal struggle of watching the older men try to get his Aunt, who is the closest thing he's had to a mother, married off.

This is a sweet book that made me smile as I read it. It is a coming of age book that does have a Christian focus. To be honest, I was afraid that could be annoying, but there were only a few times I thought it got preachy. Most of the story was simple, yet nicely done. It is from the point of view of a twelve year old boy in the early 1900's. The characters were very likable.

I have been reading a lot of novels lately that have women/young women as the main character, but the central character in this book is a 10 year old boy. Nice change of pace, very enjoyable to read, and a good message (but what other kind of message could there be with Janette Oke as the author?). I definitely recommend this book.

This book was well written (it felt like i was reading a letter from that time period). I was a little skeptical at first but once i started reading it i was sucked in. It's a good short story about only 200 pages. I did feel a lot of compassion for the characters in this book.

Book on CD. Typical Janetter Oke. The story telling was okay, and I liked it better than some of her other books. At times I felt a bit spoon fed with the story and the lessons, and the characters could have been more developed, but overall a good clean read.

I really enjoyed this book! At first I couldn't seem to get past the use of words such as "iffin and crik", but when you realize it's from a kid's (a boy at that) perspective, it seemed much more acceptable. I thought it was a very easy and enjoyable read.

My Grandmother gave me this series for my birthday. It's very light and old-fashioned, very pleasant to read. Not the most accurate historically, in regard to health care, treatment of women, and tough farm life, but I nice rose colored version.

I was really pleasantly surprised. I actually liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. The last time I tried reading Janette Oke seems like ages ago. I didn't really like it much then and never tried it again till now.

This Christian fiction book is a cute story of a boy’s love for his unusual family made up of his uncle, grandfather, aunt, great-grandfather and his dog. I especially liked the boy's close relationship with his dog and his relationship with God. I think a boy might enjoy this book since the main character is Josh and it's his story. He shares his feelings with the reader about the things happening in his family and his anger towards God. The aunt finds romance but it was quite humorous how her...more

I really like reading a story without wondering if there's going to be anything objectionable on the next page. I liked the character of Aunt Lou and was anxious to return to the library to get the rest of the series.

I read all of Janette Oke's books in junior high and I remember really liking them. So I thought it was time to read them again. This series is an easy read and I enjoy the small town, farm boy feel.
Gerald Curtis
This was a wonderful family story, clean and easy to read, about characters and situations that seemed real and that were easy to care about. I thourghouly enjoyed it and look forward to more of her books.

Janette Oke is a wonderful writter. If you loved Little House on the Prarie and that's your kind of book, you will love all of Janette Oke's books! They are full of heartwarming stories and good values.

Sweet story. Told thru the eyes of a 12 year old boy. Easy to see how some of it will turn out. Plan to read the next in the series since it is easy to read. Good story telling!
Connie
Enjoyed this book very much! Even though I had read the 3rd book in this series first, I enjoyed this story of Josh Jones and his family. The focus of this book was on Josh's young aunt, Lou.

Janette Oke's books were among the first Christian romantic fiction books that I read-as a preteen/young teenager. This series in particular is probably my favorite of hers.
Rebecca Rash
I found this a bit of a dull read, and is probably my least favorite out of Janette Oke (or at least what I have read.) Though for the record, my sister enjoyed it.
Janet Wilcox
Haven't read this author much, but was ready for something light and family friendly. It didn't disapoint. Will do another one on the next road trip.

I read this book at some point in my teens, upon my mom's recommendation. I remember liking it at the time, but I don't remember much about it.
Margaret
One of my favourite authors! This book is very sweet. I love reading about the late 1800s (early 1900s) period and sometimes I wish I could go back in time.
Callie
Probably my favorite of the Janette Oke books that I have read. Endearing characters, funny situations, and a feel good love story.

Finally Oke went back to great details, I feel like I am part of the story again, excited about moving on to the next one!

Another quick read from Janette Oke. I do enjoy her clean books with strong Christian values.
