The story was enjoyable enough and certainly kept me entertained for a couple of days. The recreation of the early 20th Century was very vivid, and I was impressed by how well Follett applied his considerable skills in this respect to a variety of nations and social classes. The recreation of the early 20th Century was very vivid, and I was impressed by how well Follett applied his considerable skills in this respect to a variety of nations and social classes. To cover so many years in any decent amount of depth was a great challenge, to which Follett rises well. The story was fast-paced and the build-up to the War was particularly well managed. The particularly notable aspect of Follett's storytelling is that he manages to weave together a great many themes in one fluid story: the First World War; political reform in Britain; social upheaval in Russia and the development of the United States as a significant world power. This was well executed and allowed a free-floing narrative to become established. Given that long periods of time could elapse between two appearances of each character, anticipation builds significantly over the course of the story and it is interesting to see how each character's situation has developed over days, months or even years. Nevertheless, there are some problems with the book, mainly in characterisation and in the relations between the characters in the story.

Rather than allow the characters to be merely players on a bigger stage, Follett insists on engineering direct connections between them, no matter how unlikely the circumstances. Many of the meetings and sightings between characters, particularly during the War, are highly contrived. For instance not once, but twice, two characters, one German, one English, are posted directly opposite each other in the trenches: convenient, given that they are old school friends. While this did allow a reunion over the Truce of Christmas 1914, enabling Follett to detail this interesting occurrence and add some emotional depth to the section, the second time it happens seems rather less well considered and seems to stretch the boundaries of belief. In another instance, the same German is noticed by an American soldier who believes he 'may have known him before the War'. Again, the sighting seems somewhat heavily contrived and does not add much in the way of emotion or character development. There are many occurrences like this within the book, and the more there are, the less easy they are to accept. It is a shame, as this does somewhat derail the narrative and as a result I could never quite find myself immersed in the story. One can't help but feel that the narrative my have been served better if Follett had not deliberately created links between so many characters, rather allowing more to progress through the story unnoticed by the others.

Characterisation did also become a problem. For example, Earl Fitzherbert begins the story as very much a product of his time: a Conservative peer with a revulsion towards reform. However, he is not an unplesant person and, despite his infidelities, generally comes across reasonably well. When he reaches the War his natural gallantry and sense of honour come to the fore when he is forced to battle against the wills of stubborn senior officers in order to persuade the BEF to put up stauncher resistance against the Germans. Unfortunately, after this he becomes rather more of a charicature, almost becoming a pantomime villain towards the end. He becomes the typical 'donkey' officer, so beloved of mainstream history and so clear in the modern public imagination.

Indeed, this is a problem with the recreation of the War throughout the book. Follett's is a modern, mainstream interpretation, mainly based on the thoughts of anti-war poets from the trenches and is firmly rooted modern perceptions. Much recent history on the period has demonstrated the gallantry of officers, as well as the numerous new tactics implemented by British high command in order to win the War: Follett prefers to rely on the popular imagining of waves of brave privates and NCOs being thrown repeatedly against barbed wire and machine guns while the officers sat safe in the dugouts. Such interpretations are not true. By the end of the War, the same officers, notably the much-maligned Douglas Haig, had turned a loose bunch of several million conscripts and volunteers into an extremely efficient military machine: no mean feat when one considers that the pre-War British army was only around 100,000 men at its height. Even during the peak of the Peninsular War and Waterloo campaign the army only reached the dizzying heights of 150,000 men. Moreover, Follett seems to create an anti-war feeling throughout the lower classes, with only the upper classes in all the countries in the book showing support for the War. This is certainly untrue and there is plenty of poetry from front-line troops who enjoyed their War and believed wholeheartedly in their purpose. I don't deny that there was anti-war feeling, but I do feel that Follett's interpretation is somewhat misleading in suggesting how widespread it was. The novel also seems to suggest that German support for the War extended no further than the upper classes and the diplomatic service: this is, again, disingenuous. I am no expert on the matter, but for a very convincing argument, Gordon Corrigan's 'Mud, Blood and Poppycock' is an essential counterpoint to many modern assumptions.

Finally, the rapidity and ease with which the characters seemed to fall in love with each other became tedious. Every time it led to some rather stilted love scenes which broke the flow of the narrative. Furthermore, the relationships seemed reasonably unimportant and did not deserve as prominent a place in the overall story as they seemed to receive. The numerous times when characters declared their undying love for each other, or fell in love after the briefest of associations became irritating rather than engendering any emotional response to the situation.

That said, I would recommend the book as it was an entertaining story and Follett's attention to historical detail is highly admirable, making it an enjoyable story. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy and my only hope is that the later characters might be more deserving of a response from the reader.

EDIT: On reflection I'm not sure I would recommend this book. Since I wrote the review the sequel has come out and I haven't even thought about picking it up. It's a shame, because I had heard good things of him, and will probably still try Pillars of the Earth (which has sat on my shelf for far too long).(less)

It's a little disappointing that people are rating this book on Amazon out of protest of its price. It's low rating does not give the book the recognition it deserves. This is my first Ken Follett novel, and I am hooked. I've read where some people have not been that interested in the subject matter of Fall of Giants and prefer the Middle Ages. I'm fascinated with 20th Century history, so this is right down my alley.

Do not say that I don't like historical fiction - because I do. Do not even say I don't like Follett - because I rather do. In fact, this highly praised - and very thick - volume I'd been anticipating eagerly, both because I had pleasant memories from The Pillars of the Earth and because currently I am rather WWI mad; I read Tuchman's classic works, Maddox Ford, not to mention Hemingway and Remarque, because I am fascinated by the subject.

One of the early reviews I read stated that this book lacked one of Follett's infamous villains. I disagree. The ultimate villain in this enormous book is clearly war and perhaps the arrogance of world leaders.

Neste primeiro volume, começamos a viagem em 1911 e acabamos em 1925. Ou seja, vamos viajar até à Europa nos anos em que a Primeira Guerra Mundial grassou um pouco por todo o território europeu. O leitor vai poder transportar-se para esta época conturbada que teve um impacto a uma escala mundial, na medida em que após este conflito, a sociedade como era conhecida, nunca mais voltará a ser o que era. A Grande Guerra veio significar muitas coisas, mas a mais notória é o massacre de vidas humanas, em número abismal. Mais de 16 milhões de pessoas morreram neste conflito e esta guerra encontra-se na tabela dos conflitos da história mundial que mais mortes e causalidades causou.

Esta não é a primeira obra do autor que leio. Nem a maior, de facto. Os Pilares da Terra (como um todo) ainda conseguem superar, em quantidade de páginas, a extensão deste A Queda dos Gigantes. O que eu quero dizer é que este autor já me é familiar em ambas as vertentes - policiais/thrillers e romances históricos.
Tendo em conta que são duas vertentes diferentes, seria de esperar que tivesse preferência e que gostasse mais do estilo do autor numa do que noutra. No entanto, não é isso que acontece. O autor tem uma escrita fabulosa nas diferentes vertentes e nunca deixa de me conquistar com os seus livros, com as suas tramas e sobretudo com a sua narrativa. Ken Follett é um escritor brilhante, não só dotado de uma mestria narrativa, como antes referi, como também sabe como captar rapidamente o leitor, sem que este perca motivação com a extensão dos seus livros. Estes romances históricos são sempre obras que levam uma quantidade enorme de tempo a preparar e a planear. A pesquisa histórica que é necessária para construir estes livros tem de ser tomada em conta de uma maneira especial, sendo que o autor tem de saber discernir o que é fulcral para o seu enredo e aquilo que não o é. Por isso mesmo, o autor tem que decidir qual é a informação histórica que vai apresentar e integrar no seu romance e tem que se certificar que esta é de rigor, não se limitando a "despejar" factos históricos sem qualquer veracidade.

O autor fez isto e tudo mais. É notável, logo à partida, que a pesquisa feita para este livro foi extensiva e exaustiva. Os pormenores históricos estão aqui presentes numa quantidade incrível, descritos de forma clara e explícita. O facto de a obra ser estruturada de forma cronológica, facilita ao leitor transplantar-se rapidamente para a época que se vive no livro e mais facilmente o leitor cria empatia com as personagens e com o enredo.
Devido ao elevado número de personagens, a primeira metade do livro pode às vezes ser confusa, mas o índice de personagens ordenado por nacionalidade, ajuda muito o leitor a colocar as ideias em ordem.
Diria que este livro é uma noção de história, mas é bem mais que isso. Além de factos verídicos, contexto histórico, pude realmente imaginar como seriam as vidas de quem passou por tal período na história do nosso mundo. Pude apreciar a paz que vivemos no nosso país hoje em dia e pude estabelecer alguns paralelos entre a realidade do que foi e a realidade do que hoje é. Pude também colocar-me no lugar de todos aqueles homens, soldados que deram a sua vida, o seu contributo para que hoje em dia possamos viver num entendimento (às vezes precário), possamos viver em paz. Possamos compreender e aceitar as nossas diferenças e não partir logo para a guerra, como antes parecia acontecer.
De facto, pude imaginar-me a mim a viver naquele tempo e não no de hoje e a desesperar por não ver um fim à guerra, ao tempo de miséria, ao tempo de constante estado de instabilidade.
Fez-me também ver em que aspectos progredimos e em que aspectos não progredimos.

Ken Follett cria um equilíbrio flexível entre a realidade histórica e a ficção, mas nem isso tira paixão à narrativa. A escrita do autor, em nenhum momento, se torna aborrecida, embora ache que existiram certas passagens em que era desnecessário tanta descrição. Contudo, foi um livro que apesar de ser muito extenso, sempre me deu alento para continuar a minha leitura e quando, ao fim de mais de 900 páginas, poisei o livro senti que um peso me tinha libertado (literal e figurativamente - porque o livro é bem pesado!). Chegando ao fim da longa jornada, senti-me preenchida com a história complexa, mas por demais completa, que o autor nos apresenta.

É um dos melhores romances históricos que já li, onde o romance e a história se harmonizam de uma forma perfeita. Um livro que ninguém deve perder, pela riqueza cultural, pela viagem ao passado e pela roleta russa de emoções que nos faz sentir. (less)

I have loved just about everything Ken Follett has written, but I think this one fell short of his usual standard. Most of his novels grab you from the beginning, with fully-drawn characters and gripping plot lines. This is a fantastic epic, the first in a planned trilogy by the author of The Pillars of the Earth (now a miniseries) and World Without End. I simply raced through the pages, unable to put this book down even though it was a hefty nearly 1000 pages.

The story moves seamlessly and logically, starting in 1911 and ending in 1925, and has a large cast of characters -- all so beautifully developed that the reader comes to care about each one -- the good and the bad. A helpful CAST OF CHARACTERS is provided at the beginning of the book that may be copied and used as reference, but it is really not needed as the reader is introduced to each and they are so memorable that it's easy to keep them straight. The families are American, English, Scottish, French, German and Austrian, Russian, and Welsh. There are Lords and Ladies, Dukes and Duchesses, Kings, Queens, Earls, Dukes -- even the servants, miners, and other assorted people populate this work of fiction. The author has also inserted real historical figures into the story, and their interaction with Follett's characters is very well done.

Book one of the CENTURY TRILOGY is set in Europe before, during and after World War I. From a mining town in Aberowen, South Wales, to the drawing rooms of the privileged aristocracy in Russia, Britain, Germany, and to the War Room in the White House of Woodrow Wilson -- the narrative captivates as it tells the tale of the people involved in the conflict and their lives during this period of change in the world.

The story is intriguing and complex, but eminently readable. The violence and gore that were present in Follett's previous works is absent here, and the action is fast and the storytelling fantastic. I have a fondness for historical fiction, and this work does not disappoint as the author has obviously thoroughly researched the era and has rendered it beautifully.

I won't and can't provide a synopsis of this book other than to say that it's a drama about life and love during these fateful years and I promise you that this will go down as being one of the best books you've ever read.

I cannot recommend it highly enough and can't wait for the sequel! Historical fiction at its best. (less)

Gosto muito de História e, como consequência, romance-histórico é um dos meus géneros literários de eleição. O século XX é um periodo sobre o qual já queria ler um livro há muito tempo, uma vez que é um período histórico fascinante e relativamente recente.

Foi então que vi este livro numa livraria e fiquei fascinada. Era exactamente o que eu queria: um percurso por todo o século XX, partindo de vários pontos de vista e escrito por um dos meus autores favoritos. Não é de admirar, portanto, que ten...more Gosto muito de História e, como consequência, romance-histórico é um dos meus géneros literários de eleição. O século XX é um periodo sobre o qual já queria ler um livro há muito tempo, uma vez que é um período histórico fascinante e relativamente recente.

Foi então que vi este livro numa livraria e fiquei fascinada. Era exactamente o que eu queria: um percurso por todo o século XX, partindo de vários pontos de vista e escrito por um dos meus autores favoritos. Não é de admirar, portanto, que tenha partido para a leitura deste A Queda dos Gigantes com expectativas muito elevadas. Não fiquei nada desiludida.

Ler este livro, para mim, foi uma experiência diferente, talvez por se tratar de um tempo tão próximo do meu. Eu já sei como vai ser o fim da trilogia, aliás, toda a gente sabe. Mais não seja porque o nosso dia-a-dia já foi vivido nele, ou seja, nós sabemos como vai acabar o século XX. É tal e qual como ler um livro, ou ver um filme, que já não lemos/vemos há muito tempo, não nos lembramos dos pormenores todos, mas sabemos quem sobrevive no fim.

Mas aquilo que podia parecer uma desvantagem, torna-se uma vantagem enorme. É que ver um filme pela segunda vez, e já sabendo o final, torna-nos muito mais atentos aos pequenos pormenores que vão ditar o desfecho. E desse ponto de vista, este livro foi para mim uma aprendizagem. Foi muito interessante saber como tudo se passou, como alguns eventos originaram outros e tudo teve como consequência aquilo que ja sabemos. Acho que quem gosta de romance histórico entende aquilo que quero dizer.

Este primeiro livro da trilogia O Século acompanha principalmente a Primeira Guerra Mundial, sendo dividido em três partes, uma antes, outra durante e ainda uma após a guerra. Acompanhamos também outros momentos marcantes do início de século, como a Revolução Russa e o movimento sufragista feminino em Inglaterra.

Centrado em personagens muito interessantes e bem construidas, este livro faz um retrato que, eu penso, seja fiel à verdade histórica da época (tanto quanto pode eser). Trata-se de uma leitura muito interessante, principalmente para quem gosta de História.

Altamente recomendado.

Se dovessi indicare un periodo storico che trovo particolarmente affascinante, non esiterei a scegliere gli anni della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Vuoi per la suggestione di Remarque (il suo romanzo-testimonianza, “Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale”, è la prova di quanto un’esperienza così tragica arricchisca la sensibilità artistica), vuoi per il passaggio forzato, inatteso, da un mondo ancora di Ancién Regime a un orizzonte in cui i valori politici ed economici e i rapporti di forza tra le classi sociali si trovano completamente ribaltati. La Prima Guerra Mondiale non significa soltanto trincee, reticolati, mitragliatrici: significa anche rivoluzione russa, rivendicazioni femministe, disgregazione di imperi. È la prima grande esperienza collettiva, uno dei più distruttivi esperimenti di globalizzazione. Ed è, soprattutto, un accadimento che si ripeterà neanche trent’anni dopo, in forma più folle e sanguinaria. È la dimostrazione più lampante che l’uomo non è in grado di imparare dai propri errori.

Tutto questo lo troviamo nel romanzo di Follett. Il lettore è portato al centro degli eventi, assiste in prima persona all’offensiva sulla Somme, alla presa del Palazzo d’Inverno, alla Conferenza di Versailles. Personaggi di finzione intrecciano i loro percorsi a persone realmente esistite senza che l’uno sia più vero o meno vero dell’altro. Scindere la finzione dalla storia diventa un piacevole passatempo.
Follett, da grande affabulatore, tiene le fila di questo mondo gigantesco senza mai annoiare. La sua capacità di rendere appassionante quanto in un libro di storia è fredda cronaca è notevole. Alle spalle ha una solida e circostanziata documentazione (che a volte, forse, fa sentire un po’ troppo). La ricostruzione che se ne ha è intrigante, assolutamente godibile, a tratti piccante.
Quel che Follett non ha, invece, è uno stile particolarmente elaborato. La prosa si fa nelle sue mani un po’ asciutta. Il lettore gradirebbe, ogni tanto, qualche guizzo artistico. Anche la caratterizzazione psicologica rischia di appiattire un po’ troppo i personaggi sulla propria origine sociale, facendone quasi dei tipi. C’è da aggiungere, a questo proposito, che un romanzo di Follett è però la migliore e più dignitosa forma di intrattenimento. Sfido io a scrivere un’operetta di questa mole senza rendere la lettura estremamente gravosa. Non siamo di fronte a un “Guerra e pace”, per intenderci, ma neanche vogliamo esserci. Leggiamo Follett per il piacere dell’intrigo, per il gusto dell’avventura dal chiuso delle nostre stanze. E Follett, dal canto suo, ci fa viaggiare in un vagone di gran lusso.
Aspetto che esca il seguito in edizione economica. Poi riprendo il viaggio.

It is with a degree of commitment that you pick up a Follett novel. They are unapologetically weighty...all close to 1000 pages. Big sweeping novels with lots of characters, lots of time and like a little mini history lesson wrapped in a novel. Fall of Giants is no exception...the first of three novels, this one takes place during the WWI era. Very quick review:

First of all, this book was delightful.
As a big fan of historical novels, I loved to learn more about the european - and also about the world's - recent history.

Fall of Giants narrates the story of different families from different countries and social classes. The period of time when this story is narrated involves the three main happenings of the first 20 years of the XX century: The WWI, the russian revolution, and the fight for women's right to vote in Great Britain.

Follett has a way of creating characters that are original and so real. I fall in love with them from the minute he introduces them to the plot and I can't book the book down, because when I'm without it I'm lonely for my new friends :)

I enjoyed "Fall of Giants," but wasn't all the interested in all the war strategy that was plentiful throughout. I hate to say it, but it just wan't "Pillars of the Earth."

Più che alla caduta dei giganti, assistiamo alla caduta, impietosa, del gigante. Mi è sempre piaciuto Ken Follett, ho letto tutti i suoi libri di spionaggio ambientati durante il secondo conflitto mondiale (da "La cruna dell’ago" a "Il volo del calabrone", per intenderci) e li ho divorati; ho letto i suoi thriller contemporanei, stile "Il terzo gemello" e mi sono piaciuti. Un capitolo a parte meriterebbero gli infiniti, monumentali e bellissimi "I pilastri della terra" e "Mondo senza fine".

Mi è sempre piaciuto Ken Follett, ho letto tutti i suoi libri di spionaggio ambientati durante il secondo conflitto mondiale (da "La cruna dell’ago" a "Il volo del calabrone", per intenderci) e li ho divorati; ho letto i suoi thriller contemporanei, stile "Il terzo gemello" e mi sono piaciuti. Un capitolo a parte meriterebbero gli infiniti, monumentali e bellissimi "I pilastri della terra" e "Mondo senza fine".

Tra molti alti e qualche basso, quest'autore mi è sempre piaciuto e dunque mi sono accostato con entusiasmo e un sacco di aspettative a questo romanzo, che purtroppo si è rivelato uno scritto pruriginoso per vergini collegiali dai sani appetiti sessuali, con un contorno storico, peraltro ricostruito molto bene grazie alle ricerche storiche come sempre accurate. Ora, questo vuole essere l’inizio di una nuova monumentale saga che ripercorre gli eventi del XX secolo attraverso gli occhi di cinque famiglie. Guerre mondiali, cambiamento sociale e progressi tecnologici e artistici con quella dose di thriller e suspense che in Follett dovrebbe essere una garanzia. Ma non lo è affatto.

Sì perchè sembra di leggere una soap soft-core, quelli degli Harmony più spinti per intenderci, più che un romanzo storico, con personaggi che se da una parte sono veramente stereotipati: il lord pieno di arroganza e ricco che s'ingroppa la servitù, l'ingroppata che si farà strada nella vita, il russo che dalla povertà, grazie alla rivoluzione acquisirà il potere per poi pentirsene, due grandi amori spezzati dalla guerra e via così... dall'altra gli stessi protagonisti per giustificare il fatto di essere sempre al centro degli avvenimenti storici narrati, vengono impiegati in una girandola di ruoli altamente improbabili.

Il fatto è questi personaggi, a parte le trombate, sono di una noiosità estrema nelle loro improbabili vicissitudini; nessuna empatia, nessun patos e tanta voglia di interrompere la lettura se non che la ricostruzione storica è accurata e gli appassionati di storia sono invogliati a leggere in una luce romanzata i passaggi fondamentali della nostra storia del primo novecento.

La prima guerra mondiale, la rivoluzione russa, la storia americana ed inglese di questo periodo storico è uno scenario davvero complesso, forse troppo per essere tratteggiato in un unico libro e l'ambiziosità dell'autore, è probabilmente troppa e la parte romanzata è davvero scadente. Follet cerca di mettere sul tavolo le due sue doti migliori: la ricostruzione storica e gli intrecci narrativi, ma se dalla prima qualcosa arriva, dalla seconda ci si annoia notevolmente.

D’accordo probabilmente si dovrebbe sapere a cosa si va incontro leggendo Follett, ma solitamente ci si diverte nelle sue finzioni, la lettura scorre, ma tutte queste situazioni inverosimili in cui si muovono i personaggi creati fanno storcere il naso e non poco, non convincendo, non coinvolgendo che è anche peggio. Ho portato avanti la lettura annoiandomi in parecchie pagine e dunque il mio giudizio non può essere positivo. Davvero una delusione che rimanderà sicuramente la lettura degli altri capitoli di questa trilogia.(less)

Quando publiquei a minha 1ª opinião referi que, acima de tudo, este é um livro sobre pessoas e a sua luta diária pelos seus ideais e por uma vida melhor. Mantenho a minha opinião. Este é um livro sobre as pessoas, sobre o modo como as diferentes pessoas podem ver a mesma realidade de modos dispares, sobre o modo como a educação, a classe social e tantos outros factores podem condicionar o pensamento e, consequentemente, as acções de um ser humano. Continuo a pensar que os personagens e o a forma como o autor consegue relacionar todos os personagens entre si, bem como a sua capacidade de nos fazer ver as coisas de vários pontos de vista nunca deixando que a narrativa se torne monótona, são os pontos mais fortes deste livro.
A este nível, os destinos que Follett confere aos diferentes personagens no final da Guerra servem para nos mostrar o que aconteceu em diversos países após o conflito - como o caso da Alemanha que, ainda que com escassez de comida e a sua moeda tremendamente desvalorizada, se viu obrigada a pagar a Guerra aos vencedores condenando muitos dos seus habitantes - mas que em alguns casos nos trazem uma espécie de sensação de conforto pelo destino de uns e alguma apreensão (no caso de Lev até um desejo de vingança) em relação a outros.
Ao ler este livro conseguimos rapidamente compreender que o autor se dedicou a muita pesquisa, não apenas a nível histórico mas também por forma a compreender o pensamento e as regras sociais da sociedade da época nos diferentes países focados na narrativa. Como já antes referi, não tenho qualquer problema em admitir que com esta narrativa compreendi coisas que na faculdade me passaram completamente ao lado, lendo as coisas assim conseguimos pensar, antecipar e compreender de forma muito mais clara tudo o que conduziu, não apenas a Europa mas todo o mundo, a este conflito.
Contudo, a este nível tenho as minhas reservas. Talvez por gostar muito de História ou por ter estudado estes episódios bélicos a fundo num passado não muito longínquo, penso que muito ficou por dizer. Claro que num livro deste tipo, e tendo em conta a estrutura optada na própria narrativa e que se trata de um romance, sei que há imensas coisas que teriam que ficar de fora. Ainda assim, não posso deixar de estranhar que não haja menção aos factos ocorridos nas colónias europeias por todo o mundo dado que se verificaram nestes territórios episódios bastante negros. Por outro lado, a minha veia de nacionalista (que por acaso até é mínima) não pode deixar de se insurgir quanto ao retrato do nosso país e pelo fraco envolvimento e importância que "temos" neste livro. Sabendo que a participação de Portugal na I Guerra Mundial mudou drasticamente a realidade política e social do país, conhecendo o profundo impacto que esta decisão política teve a nível interno e ao nível das centenas de famílias que perderam os seus entes queridos às ordens dos ingleses que os comandavam nas linhas da frente, não posso deixar de referir que, no que toca a este livro, Ken Follett nos deixou muito mas muito mal na fotografia. Mas a mesma queixa, talvez até pior, deve poder ser ouvida dos lábios dos leitores de todos os Países Baixos, e outros. Sejamos realistas, é um romance não um tratado histórico do tipo enciclopédico, não se pode ter tudo.
No geral, é um romance espectacular, um óptimo retracto de uma época e uma tocante história de gente, não apenas daqueles personagens inventados, mas de gente que realmente viveu e sofreu aquele negro período histórico. Uma narrativa forte que me prendeu desde os primeiros capítulos e que no fim custa a deixar para trás, levando o leitor a pensar durante dias qual terá sido o futuro que o autor reserva a determinados personagens e aos seus filhos. Que destinos nos revelará no próximo volume da trilogia, O Século?

WOW! I loved this book! It never ceases to amaze me how Ken Follett can take simple words and make them so interesting and at the same time give you wonderful information to educate you in things you didn't know. Who knew that I would become interested in coal mining?. The only negative thing I can say is that the next one in the trilogy isn't ready for me to read yet. ha ha

It was really amazing, and so informative. So, if you are asked to work on a history project on the World War I, just try this book.
He handles the story of so many people with totally different backgrounds skilfully, without messing them up. He lets you see the war and its consequences from different points of view. You can feel how the arrogant and snobbish Lord Fitz in Britain sees the war and on the other hand, how the poor workers in Russia think of war. It is AMAZING, 5 stars for Mr. Folle...more
