This was the first book that I’ve read by Kat Martin, so I went into it with no preconceived ideas of what to expect from her storytelling and writing style. I know she’s published several books, so I expected, at the very least, to enjoy the story, which for the most part, I did.

While I think that the premise of the story, and Jackson Raines as a character, were good, I felt like the writing itself was inconsistent. Sometimes it flowed really well, and other times it felt choppy. Sometimes I w

I received this copy of the book as an ARC from NetGalley. It has been a while since I'd read any Kat Martin and her last few books just hadn't interested me (in fact, her last trilogy is still sitting on my TBR pile). But with a new contemporary series, I figured I would give her a try again. It wasn't a hard read and was mildly entertaining, but everything in it just seemed so cliqued - Sarah is returning home after her abusive ex-husband is murdered and falls for her high school love (Jackson ...more

Good book that kept me interested to the end. Sarah has returned to Wind Canyon after the murder of her husband. She had left town in search of a better life and thought she found it, only to find that her husband was abusive and a crook. She has sold everything to pay his debts but is still being harassed by people who are looking for something he had. She has gotten a job with the local paper and rented a cottage for herself and her daughter on one of the local ranches. Then she discovers that ...more

Several problems with this book, most stemming from the suspense part. Sarah is in danger – not just subtle vandalism, but people holding guns up to her head. Her husband was murdered. This is not just a random act of violence. First when her new cottage gets ransacked she doesn’t come out and tell anyone right off about her husband’s murder or that she has been harassed to turn over a disk containing information about her husband being blackmailed. After her grandmother’s house gets broken into ...more

I've read a handful of Kat Martin's books and enjoyed them so when I saw this series and the western flavor it looked to have, I thought I'd give it a go. This first book was okay, but didn't stand out as much as I'd hoped it would.

Series Note:
This is the first book in the "Raines of Wind Cayon" series about 3 brothers who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks but were able to turn their lives around.

Summary:
Sarah Allen is getting over a devastating time in her life. Her bad marriage to an abu

It has been a while since I have disliked a book this much.

I really wanted to like this book. In fact I ordered the second book in the series with the anticipation of enjoying this first one. But the fact is I hated it. I could not get into it at all. I never got attached to the characters and the storyline never jived with me.

First of all, Sarah was beyond cruel to Jackson in High School. She ripped out his heart and stomped on it publicly and made sure he was completely humiliated in the proce

Sarah Allen returns home to Wind Canyon with her young daughter in tow. Her ex-husband was murdered and a bad associate of his is harassing her for information that she does not have. Escaping back to her small town roots is the only thing she can think of. She rents a small cottage on a ranch that is run by Jackson Raines, a man whom she snubbed in high school.

Jackson has never forgotten Sarah, the one girl he always had a crush on. After her blatant rejection of him in high school, the last t

Sometimes I think "meh" reviews are actually the hardest to write. A book I love, I can go on and on. A book I hated, sometimes that's even easier. But a book that was just "fine" is hard to discuss.

Anyway, nothing really wrong with this book. I liked both Jackson and Sarah. Sarah was certainly a sympathetic character but in some ways it was almost too much. Too many mustache twirling villains coming after her. And Jackson maybe falls a bit on the too perfect side, but as I've said before, I ac

Sarah Allen grew up wanting only to get out of the small town she grew up in. In high school she had captured the eye of Jackson Raine, whose family history left the town frowning their nose down on them. Jackson paid the cost of a naive Sarah who humiliated him in a way no other could.

Years later Sarah is returning home with her young daughter and has managed to rent a property, unknown to her, on Jackson Raine's land. Even though Jackson would like to forget his feelings are still raw where Sa

Sarah Allen returns to Wyoming and the small town of Wind Canyon after the death of her husband. She brings with her Holly, her daughter. Jackson Raines was the boy in high school she had a crush on, but she shunned him because he was "beneath" her and she wanted more. When she finds out that he is her landlord, she is a bit shocked and also intrigued by how well he has turned out.
Jackson would have been fine never seeing Sarah Allen again. She humiliated him and broke his heart. But when she is

This book wasn't bad. But there was just something that didn't do it for me. There was so much going on that I felt like I could hardly keep up.

Jackson and Sarah knew each other from high school. Jackson had a crush on her. But when he asked her out she humiliated him. Here was one problem for me. She says shes sorry all these years later. But by the end of the book they never really talked about it. When she apologies he never says a word. Yet through the book he says how he isn't sure he can t

AGAINST THE WIND (Book #1 in the Raines Brothers Trilogy) by Kat Martin
12/10 - Mira - Mass Market Paperback, 400 pages - ISBN-13: 9780778329190

A wonderful wind sweeping romance and mystery

Sarah Allen is not running from her past she is just packing it up and moving away from it with her daughter Holly. Leaving the baggage her murdered husband created is the best option since his life left her bankrupt, physically abused and trying to convince the people he did business with that she does not hav

This book was and enjoyable read but lacking in the romance department for me. I enjoyed the characters the scenery and even the plot. I have looking forward to this series for some time as I love Kat Martin.Sarah Allen-Hollister returns home after many years of being gone. She rents a cottage from and old acquaintance from school Jackson Raines. But Jackson is not wanting her to stay as the have a past of sorts but agrees to let her stay on and see how things work out. My dominant emotion towards this book was "meh." The fourth time I checked to see if I was almost done, I decided it was time to cut things short.

This romance is supposed to have a strong suspense/mystery/action plot, centering around the criminal activities of the heroine's deceased husband. She has a strong "run away and hide" instinct, and given her history of abuse, that may be realistic. I found it much more of a stretch, however, when the hero and his brothers came on the scene and took ov

Against the Wind is by Kat Martin. This is book one in the series she wrote about the Raines boys.
Sarah’s husband Andrew is found in the home they were getting ready to sell. He was still living there while Sarah and her daughter had moved out. Who murdered him? Of course, Sarah was a suspect at first but she was getting their daughter from class. Her alibi stood. Only one officer suspects she killed him. Why is he set on convicting her? Sarah is left with almost nothing after she finds that An

So bad and yet I read it. So bad I kept telling my kids "I am reading the dumbest book." So bad and yet I finished it. I was hoping for an easy, romance read. This isn't usually my genre, and I obviously don't know how to pick them. The book ended up on my Kindle and I don't remember how, so when I was looking for something easy and a bit juicy, I thought why not.

There is a long list of why nots. (Caveat, I don't read romance for a reason and the reasons why are the same reasons why I didn't lik

I thought this book was OK. For me, there was a little too much going on in the story, and every time they thought they finished the "suspense" angle, something else came up. I did like Jackson and thought Sarah was OK. I'll probably read the other stories in the series.

Let's just say you like rough-and-tumble dogs, pitbulls, German shepherds, Dobermans. But once in a while you go to your friend's house, who has a very nice not-neurotic poodle. You have a great time with that dog, that you wouldn't pick for yourself but is fun to visit. That's how I feel about this book. Classic modern romance, predictable and steamy, with a fairy-tale ending. Ta Da! Check your cynical realism at the door, ladies. My one main complaint is the author, Kat Martin, continually mad ...more

Sarah Allen's husband is murdered. Finding that his debts have left her nearly penniless, she moves from California back home to Wyoming. Once there, she discovers that she has rented a house on a ranch owned by Jackson Raines. Jackson was attracted to Sarah in high school. Sarah dared not acknowledge her attraction to Jackson because he was not one of the "in" crowd. Sarah is being threatened by former associates of her late husband because they think she has information on his business dealing ...more

I save the one star rating for two types of books. Type A: Books that I finished through the end and are just plain awful; and Type B: books that just don't do it for me and I couldn't finish. This one falls into the Type B: category.

The writing wasn't all that bad, the story was predictable as many romances/women's fiction books are. I can handle the predictable if the writing is well done (see: Nora Roberts). With this one, I just couldn't. It wasn't bad, but I couldn't finish it. By chapter

Kat Martin has been on my TBR pile for a long time. Enjoyable read with lots of layers to the characters - especially Sarah - and the storyline. Set in LA and Wyoming with lots of descriptions to visualize the scenes. Jackson was too good to be true and Sarah finally realized how lucky she was to have him, his brothers and his ranch hands on her side. Holly was adorable. There was the happily ever after nicely set out in the epilogue. Can't wait to read books 2 and 3 in the series - Gabe and Dev ...more

Sometimes you need an escape. Sometimes you need to stand and fight

So who out there did something during high school that you wished you could take back? Something that if you changed it then perhaps the life you now lived would be very different?

Jackson Raines had been shunned at high school because of his background. He had been classed as a misfit yet he still hoped that Sarah Allen the beautiful girl in school would go to the prom with him. Sarah, having her own insecurities turned Jackson d

This book sat on my virtual "to-read" shelf for months, building a sense of anticipation. I love modern western romances and with an almost 3.75 rating, I thought this book would be perfect. I was wrong. Overall it was a disappointment. In my opinion the author didn't take advantage of the location and the plot line(s) could have easily taken place in any small town. A few trail rides into the mountains does not a western romance make! Also, the main characters were easily forgettable. However, ...more
