Dru Anderson's life is deeply entangled with the paranormal. She's got a bit of the 'touch' from her father's side of the family, which amounts to a sixth sense for supernatural creatures and a little bit of something extra from her mom's side of the family as well. Dru is also pushing a midlife crisis even though she is technically written as a teenage girl. She called every human being her age 'kid' as often as she could. This was meant to sound jaded and world fatigued but it made me agonizingly aware this was written by an adult who saw all teenagers as being one step out of their diapers. I really do understand the intent here. Dru has seen more shit than you have, kid. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like I was reading about a world-weary teenager. It didn't work and it should've been edited out or tempered with other more teenage moments, of which there are few unless you count the ZITS.

The author goes through great pains to let you know that Dru is not extremely attractive. She's got zits and greasy hair -- so she is totally not a Mary Sue... but that's where the line begins and ends. Dru is borderline too stupid too live and she's one of very few supernatural girls in Saintcrow's mythos. Frankly, I almost preferred Bella Swan stumbling around in a world she was too small to play in to Dru's condescending look at anyone who didn't know about the 'real' world. Yeah, the supernatural world = real world and the rest of us live in the normal world.

I found the character annoying, which sucks because I really wanted to like her, but I couldn't. Dru doesn't give a crap about how she looks, because that's for normal girls. I really hate how Dru kept equating girls who gave a crap about their appearance as food for the things who bump in the night. There's a line between vanity and using zit cream or running a brush through your hair. It's a huge line! I don't know who the author was at Dru's age, but I wasn't one of the girls who had a mirror in their lockers and watched every calorie they consumed and still managed to run a brush through my hair without feeling shallow.

Beyond Dru, there were some writing quirks that annoyed me. For instance every fucking thing halfway mentioned in the novel had a smell. Okay, we get an explanation for why Dru's sense of smell is on overdrive (sort of), but it was still totally distracting. There was less scene setting so much as olfactory torture setting and if I had a nickel for every time she mentions how one of the boys in her love triangle smelled like pastries I could get the next three novels without dipping into my own pocket.

The minor characters were okay, although there weren't a lot. It was really just the love triangle. There were a lot of borderline racist comments made about the appearance of one half-Asian character. Who really calls people of mixed race "half-breeds?" Like, where is that socially acceptable? Every time she talked about his half-breed skin color I kind of wanted to strangle Dru. I have a cousin who is half Chinese (and half Irish from my uncle). As a baby he had beautiful copper colored hair and green eyes with an Asian slant. Saintcrow's description of Graves make all half one race and half another race children sound slapped together with broken bits and pieces rather than anything that could possibly be genuinely attractive (although she does say Graves might be pretty someday when he's 40 like she is -- okay she didn't say 40 but it's so effing distracting for her to keep saying when he grows up he'll be cute. NOTE FOR THE AUTHOR: SOMETIMES TEENAGERS ARE ATTRACTED TO PEOPLE THEIR OWN AGE. OH THE CRAZINESS). I say all half and half very specifically because while it was Graves being described it was still done in such a BROAD way that it came out as racist.

Also, some of the world building and character outlines are sloppy. I know this from reading the second book. I won't include the details here, but seriously sloppy world building. I suspect Dru having the touch on her father's side is something that ought to have been edited out when the direction of the store changed, but then the writer decided 'what the hell, I'll make her super special on both sides!'

What fucking ever. I'm so over the Supernatural!Supermagical!Vaginas! Listen, Paranormal authors, having magic breasticles had been done before (Rachel Vincent's Faythe, Kelly Armstrong's Elena, etc). If your character can't be special without being the ONLY ONE OF THEIR GENDER then perhaps your character just fucking sucks nuts.(less)

I wanted this to be something other than it was. What I really wanted was Supernatural the show but with a teen girl. Dru grew up hunting the big bad thing in the dark. Strange Angels really grabbed me because it sounded like Supernatural (the show) - a girl and her father out to hunt evil beings of the night. Unfortunately, what resulted instead was nothing like Supernatural but more aligned with the Buffy vibe, only with a whole lot of other creatures of the night.

While there's no doubt that this book is written quite well, I quite a few gripes with the book that prevented me from enjoying it too much.

To surmise my thoughts on this book, this series has serious potential. It was sort of like a mix between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Twilight and City of Bones. While the book itself was a slow start to hopefully something even better, by the end of the book I was heavily anticipating the next novel, Betrayals.

I liked this one, fast paced, action packed, paranormal page turner, er... urban fantasy.

The story was interesting. Dad and daughter engaged in a battle with all things that go bump in the night. This was something new for me. Not sure I understood why her Dad would put himself in harms way, when he is her only living family member, but I guess that just adds to the story.

God, this book was SO boring. It was really slow paced and really trite. I had a hard time keeping my eyelids open.

The writing was fairly good but the character description was not. There wasn’t enough information given so it was really tough to imagine how the character looked like. Dru was said to have frizzy hair, Christophe had blue eyes and a good-looking face but that was it. No other details provided to get to know the character better. Graves was a Goth Boy so we don’t need any description for that, I guess.
The story is well, nothing really. Dru Anderson has “the touch”, she can sense supernatural creatures and that’s why her Dad trained her to hunt and kill them, to protect herself. But things start going south when her father goes on a hunting trip and doesn't return. Nothing much of significance happened till half of the book. The story moved a little bit forward when Christophe arrived but still, they did nothing except talking.

What I did like about this was that the girl was not whiny. She took action and never acted on impulse, she thought everything through before doing anything. Second, I appreciate that the author decided her character to be aware of the World. The idea of a guy coming up on your doorstep one day and telling you that you aren't human and there are supernatural creatures out there which makes the heroine go in a state thinking her world is turned upside down is utterly beaten up. But still there were some things that Dru found out along the way which did turn her world upside down but she was able to take it better than those clingy girls.

And the best part about this book – NO ROMANCE! *fist pump*
There could’ve been a love-triangle but there wasn't. Thank God for small favours! I think there will be in the future books but lets not worry about it now. All in all, it was a good book you can say. It is one of those books which irritated you but still you don't feel like giving it less stars. Plus, I think this series has lot of potential in store. I’ll definitely read its sequel someday and pray it isn't as boring as this one.

Dru (short for ?? - we never learn exactly) is special, seeing and hearing things in the Real World that the rest of us cannot see or hear. Dru od svých pěti let, kdy jí zemřela matka, žila se svým otcem u babičky doma. Ale když jí zemřela i babička, začala s otcem cestovat z města do města... a zabíjet veškerou špatnou nadpřirozenou havěť Skutečného světa. Ty se totiž nejraději živí obyčejnými lidmi. Jenže když se jednou její otec vrátí z akce krapet mrtvý, přesto stále chodící, Dru ví, že na všechno zůstala sama.

A tak hledá místo, kde by se mohla na chvíli, než ta bolest v srdci přestane, schovat. Narazí na svého spolužáka ze školy, Gravese, který jí nabídne místo pro přenocování. Jenže jako by si Dru všechno nadpřirozené a nebezpečné samo vyhledávalo. Graves skončí pokousaný vlkodlakem a svět Dru se zase o trochu víc zašmodrchá. A jako by toho už tak nebylo málo, na scéně se objeví Chritophe, který je nějak zapletený do smrti jejího otce a který tvrdí, že Dru je velice, velice důležitá...

Knihu jsem v originále četla, tudíž jsem mohla porovnat, nakolik je český překlad věrný originálu. Před samotným čtením jsem měla z překladu poněkud obavy, jelikož jsem si přečetla několik názorů, v nichž si čtenáři na překlad spíše stěžovali. Dru totiž mluví dosti hovorově, slangově a spíš nespisovně. Není tomu tak ale celou dobu a její jazyk je opodstatněný.

Mně tedy vůbec nevadil a po pár stránkách jsem si na něj zvykla. Dokonce dávám oba palce nahoru za to, že překlad některých scén vyzněl přesně tak, jak by měl. Jediné, co mě trochu mrzí je, že došlo i k překladu polských slovíček do češtiny. Ta občasná polština dávala knize takový lehký šmrnc cizokrajnosti. Za mě určitě překlad na jedničku.

Příběh mě chytnul díky svému odlišnému pohledu na upíří světa vůbec svět nadpřirozena. V prvním díle se spíš víc seznamujeme se samotnou Dru a tím, jak se vyrovnává se svým životem. Dru jsem si okamžitě po přečtení prvních pár stran zamilovala. Není to typická hrdinka podobně zaměřených knih. Ano, ve Skutečném světě se pohybuje už nějaký ten pátek, ale vždycky v jejich likvidaci hrála pouze sekundanta. Hlavou všech operací byl vždycky její otec.

Děj má spád, prvky překvapení, děs i hrůzu a akčnost. Samozřejmě také dva představitele opačného pohlaví, po kterých můžete tajně vzdychat. Já osobně jsem se dosud nerozhodla, na čí straně stojím spíš.

Kniha mě i v češtině velice bavila. Zhltla jsem ji celou za jeden den a znovu prožívala tytéž pocity, jako při jejím prvním čtení. Za sebe dávám velice zasloužených 5 hvězdiček a doufám, že si budu moci brzo v češtině vychutnat i své oblíbené scény z pokračování.

Strange Angels was a book that was hard for me to get interested in. The issue with the story is that some things are so over described that alot of times I just wanted to rip my hair out!! Then to the other extreme it felt as if I had missed something and I was flipping back to see why I was outta the loop. I guess for some it could be enjoyable I however am not really interested to read another one.

I found myself a little hesitant about Dru in the beginning. Her and her father have been jumping around from place to place ever since her Gran died. He's a hunter of all paranormal entities that go bump in the night and has been doing so every since Dru's mother died years ago. Dru is slowly learning what she can about hunting since her father only allows her to tag along sometimes as back up. She's got a gift, kinda like a sixth sense, or the "touch" as her Gran likes to call it. She does have skills in fighting and knows how to use a gun. But at sixteen, she's pretty much mad at the world when she's introduced. Having to jump from school to school so many times she longs to be normal.

At school Dru tries to remain as aloof as possible. It doesn't help much when she meets Graves, a half-Asian goth kid who wants to befriend her despite her reluctance. She tries to push him away but he's one persistent boy. Kinda like a stray puppy that keeps begging, Graves just doesn't refuses to take "No" for an answer. Despite all that there's just something about him that calls to Dru. It may be the fact that she just longs for a friend to confide in, but how can she possible tell Graves anything about her life?

Tragedy strikes after Dru's dad doesn't come home after one of his solo missions. Dru is left on her own and quickly becomes a target for all the paranormal boogiemen. She ends up relying on Graves whether she wants to or not. And Graves becomes deeply involved after he gets bit by a werewulf. So they are pretty much stuck together and Dru continuously blames herself for Graves' predicament.

Later on they are helped by Christophe, a half-breed vampire called a djamhir, who knows more about Dru than she could ever imagine. She doesn't want to trust him but he seems determined to look out for her... And it is here where I will stop with the summary and leave the rest for you to find out =) Evil I know lol

I do want to say that the beginning really didn't do a lot for me. While I liked the story, I didn't really get into it until the last third of the book when Christophe was introduced. Not that he was my favorite character - I just felt the story really came alive in the last part. While I didn't love the novel I'm probably going to be picking up Betrayals which comes out in November.

"Altfel de Îngeri" este o carte pe care am precomandat-o de la editura Leda în urmă cu vreun an, dar de care nu m-am atins până de curând, având pe raft alte cărţi pe care doream să le citesc mai mult. Totuşi, i-a venit şi ei rândul în momentul în care am plecat pentru 3 zile în Ungaria şi aveam nevoie de o carte care să mă ţină ocupată seara, înainte de culcare.
La un rating atât de uriaş pe Goodreads, mă aşteptam să fie ceva super, mai ales că descrierea mă atrăgea (altfel de ce aş fi cumpărat...more "Altfel de Îngeri" este o carte pe care am precomandat-o de la editura Leda în urmă cu vreun an, dar de care nu m-am atins până de curând, având pe raft alte cărţi pe care doream să le citesc mai mult. La un rating atât de uriaş pe Goodreads, mă aşteptam să fie ceva super, mai ales că descrierea mă atrăgea (altfel de ce aş fi cumpărat-o?). Şi aşa a şi fost, cel puţin în primele capitole.
Dru Anderson şi tatăl ei călătoresc din oraş în oraş în căutarea şi vânarea creaturilor întunericului şi dezlegarea blestemelor. Ajunşi într-un oraş înzăpezit, totul se schimbă, pentru că tatăl ei, plecat singur la vânătoare se întoarce a doua zi... sub forma unui zombie dornic să o ucidă pe Dru, iar aceasta e nevoită să-l ucidă.
Dru Anderson ar trebui să fie o tipă dură, sau cel puţin aşa ne spun descrierile cărţii şi aceeaşi impresie ne-o dă şi personajul de-a lungul capitolelor. Mie, însă, nu mi-a plăcut de ea de nicio culoare. În primul rând, nu ştie niciodată ce vrea. Spre exemplu, pe de o parte ar vrea să aibă un adult grijă de toate, dar, pe de altă parte, când cineva cu mai multă experienţă i se iveşte în cale şi îi oferă ajutorul, Dru refuză să renunţe la controlul pe care îl are asupra situaţiei, riscând vieţile tuturor celor implicaţi.
Un alt lucru care m-a călcat pe bătături la ea a fost felul ei de a pune aceleaşi întrebări, dar aici e vina autoarei. Un acelaşi defect l-am observat şi la Graves, care repetă în mod obsesiv şi enervant aceeaşi frază care se presupune a fi amuzantă, şi care a şi fost, înainte să fie repetată după fiecare favor sau ajutor pe care i-l face lui Dru. ("Prima dată e gratis.") Apoi, înţeleg că e foarte afectată de moartea şi transformarea în zombie a tatălui ei, dar chiar nu era nevoie ca autoarea să dea copy-paste la aceleaşi replici rostite de acesta şi la care se gândeşte Dru de fiecare dată când are necazuri şi/sau e nevoită să lupte.
Lumea supranaturală e construită destul de prost, deşi autoarea are câteva idei destul de bune. Păcat că nu le-a valorificat. De ce spun asta? Pentru că de fiecare dată când trebuie să fie oferită o explicaţie mai detaliată, aceasta ori nu există, ori e foarte succintă. Nu aflăm prea multe nici despre vieţile personajelor prezente în roman, deşi probabil vom afla pe parcursul seriei şi tot ce ştim despre trecutul lui Dru e foarte vag, chiar şi pentru o persoană care nu îşi aduce aminte de prea multe din copilărie.
Mi-au plăcut, totuşi, câteva lucruri, motiv pentru care îi şi acord cărţii un rating de 2 steluţe din 5. Ideea bufniţei bunicii, prevestitoare de evenimente deosebite, în special rele, e foarte... tare. Scenele în care Dru o urmăreşte, ca pe o fantomă-călăuză sunt pline de suspans, lucru ce mi-a mai îmbunătăţit părerea despre carte. O altă treabă interesantă este separarea lumii supranaturale de cea obişnuită. Şi mai drăguţ e faptul că lumea supranaturală e numită cea Reală, deşi nu sunt sigură de ce mi-a surâs această denumire. Dar nu la asta voiam să ajung, ci la aşa-zisele localuri frecventate numai de cei care cunosc despre existenţa Lumii Reale şi la faptul că în magazinele de obiecte oculte se află şi lucruri oculte adevărate, deşi ascunse şi oferite doar anumitor clienţi - idee ce iarăşi mi-a atras atenţia, întrucât nu am prea întâlnit-o în alte cărţi de genul.
Cartea o recomand celor foarte pasionaţi de genul Young Adult şi pe care nu îi deranjează unele lipsuri, pe care le-am enumerat mai sus. Voi citi şi al doilea roman, pe care îl am de ceva vreme în bibliotecă şi sper că e mai bun decât acesta.(less)

Vlnu otřesení ale velmi brzy nahradí podezření, a na povrch se dostává mnoho otázek, na které Dru nedokáže odpovědět. Tuší ovšem jedno, někdo - něco - po ní jde...

Mohl by se vrátit, říkala jsem si. Co když uvíznul někde ve sněhu? To se stává. Někde uvíznul. Nebo v něčem.
Tak volal a tys to neslyšela. Protožes byla tuhá.
Nebo se mu něco stalo.

Příběh Dru Andersenové dokáže své čtenářstvo rozdělit na dva tábory již během několika prvních řádků. Celý překlad je totiž laděn do nespisovné češtiny, čímž kniha získává ještě o něco větší ráz než její anglický originál - a to se i v něm autorka s ničím nemazlila. Kniha díky tomu opravdu působí více svérázněji a úsečněji. Mnoho čtenářů ovšem právě nespisovnost v knihách nevidí moc rádi, i díky tomu pak může jejich hodnocení nemálo poklesnout. K drsnému životu lovkyně-vše-možné-havěti, ale jednoduše patří - ono už jen když vyrůstá v motelových pokojích, je porůznu na cestách, a pro informace razí do barů plných ostrých hochů - bylo by opravdu s podivem, aby nám z hrdinky vyrostla načesaná a vzorně vychována dáma, co se již těší na svůj debutantský večírek. A na Dru se mi pak nejvíce líbila asi právě její lidskost - vyvíjí se - a že to s tou neohrožeností lovkyně ani trochu nepřehání.

Her dad was turned into a zombie, Dru had to kill it. Graves moved in with her, he's a foster kid, tall, dark hair and green eyes. Since her grandma died, Dru has seen a white owl, it shows up when there something good or bad about to happen. Christophe also moves in with her to protect her, they don't really like each other. He tells her, that Dru is also part vampire just like her mom, and someone, who killed her mom and her dad is trying to kill her too since there aren't any girl vamps left. Sergej is the Vampire killing everything and anyone, they want to find him and kill him. Christophe is part of the Order, like her mom was, August Dru's dads friend is also. Dru is attacked by a snake with wings Dreamsnatchers they are called, it was meant to kill her. Dru and Graves try to get away in her truck when wolfs appear and attack Christophe, they make it to a place where they're meant to find someone who could help but instead Dru finds her dads wallet and necklace, and the Vampire Sergej, he tries to attack her, the owl fights him, Chris shows up with wolfs and attack him, later when they get alway Chris says they were betrayed so he sets up a place where Dru and Graves could learn and train. A school. They get picked up by a helicopter and meet Cory another teen in the Order.

So this book was kind of boring to me. And it did get annoying how she said the same things over and over and over again, like we didn't get the first time she said it a page ago, shesh, yeah your dad was turned into a zombie, yeah you don't know by who, yeah you don't know what to do, yeah we get it. I kind of thought she would be stronger not just physically but mentally, she did go hunting with her dad alot so I thought she would be a kick ass girl, but no, she cried and complained alot, idk if to continue reading the series.(less)

I had a hard time putting three stars and not letting it reach four, just becuase it really was a good book, and I do plan on reading the others... But, I couldn't seem to just like it. It's hard to explain. But it's like at first I couldn't get into it--almost set it down at one point-- and I just couldnt get to anything good.

Finally finished, it took me some time. But considering that I'm supposed to learn for my tomorrows exam, not bad.

All in all the book wasn't bad, it just didn't keep me hooked, I will probably read the rest in the series but I give it some time. Now I'm looking forward to something else.

The story started of a bit slow for me and it took quite a lot of patience to keep reading and get to the good stuff, but it did come, eventually. A few chapters in and the story opened up. Why do people who didn't watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer just assume that people who did were all about the werewolves and other monsters? That is not why Buffy has such a big fan base...most of us liked the human elements, the real-ness of the show, the characters.

Have to say, I was a little skeptical at first - Zombies? Monster hunters? My first thought was, darn it, another cheesy horror book. I was so wrong! Not in the least bit typical. Yes there are zombies, as well as other baddies but the story is amazing! Some new twists on old ideas. The action is fast paced with enough real life scenarios to hold your interest. I finished this book in two days. I gave it 3 stars because well...I finished the book. I'm a picky reader and have been know to put a book down mid-sentence so It was good enough for me to finish. However, I haven't decided if I want to continue reading the series.

The storyline is very interesting and the authors writing style is great. However, every character has the same vocabulary. It's a small detail but one that drives me crazy. Not everyone says "kid" its not a common word that every common person uses. Then there is "my dad used to say" or "my grandma use to say". Which is fine when its one character says because thats how she thinks. But then Graves starts to says "my stepdad use to say". I mean how does everyone remember what their parents use to say I don't even half of that. And what about how many times does every character says "Jesus!".

Dru is also retarded sometimes. I hate it when I figure out the who did its and whys, chapters before the main character, and the whole time your reading your just waiting for the character to catch on. And to be honest I don't think thats how character is meant to be portrayed, because eventually Dru does say something that kinda implies she might have known but just hadn't thought to mention it. But it just makes the character come off as an idiot. Hopefully if I pick up the next book the author does a better job of making me aware that the character does know whats going and isn't oblivious.

And my last and final complaint is the author tends tells us things whether than show us. I felt that when Dru was depressed about her father. Dru kept saying she was upset over and over again. I was just like come on Lili use your describing words. Instead of "I'm sad about my dad" I want " as I rest my head on the table the idea of doing anything but cry seems impossible." (obviously I'm no writer) Thats all i want. I mean we can obviously infer she is upset about her dad you don't have to have the character say it over and over again.(less)

I really liked this book. I read a lot of fantasy books, but this book has two very big pluses, that A LOT of the other books are missing.
First: Dru kicks ass! I like that. It's not like she's some kind of super-woman that can handle everyting without even blinking. No. She's a fighter. She fights even though it is difficult, even though she bleeds and even though the opponent is much bigger than her. I love books with tough girls as main character!
