"A puzzle. I've got pieces to a puzzle and I'm going to Madagascar."

Beautiful, elegant, manhattan socialite Whitney Macallister finds herself placed into a unique partnership on a hunt for a long-lost treasure. It's not just any partnership, though. After Doug Lord, a slick, determined yet charming theif hijacked her car at a astop light in attempt to run away for bad guys; Whitney now must battle with Doug, side by side, to stay ahead of the little game entitled "deat More...

Nora Roberts' Hot Ice, one of her older standalone books from the late 80's, is a halfway decent caper novel. Thief Douglas Lord, betrayed by the man who's hired him to steal valuable papers pointing the way to a lost treasure from the French Revolution, is thrust across the path of the young heirness Whitney MacAllister--who promptly decides that teaming up with Doug will be the biggest adventure of her life, and never mind his occupying the shady side of the law.

oh the places nora takes you to, escape and she does it so very well.
whitney just returns from a jaunt overseas and Doug hops into her car as others are chaing him and shooting with real bullets. they avoid then in the
car but they follow her to her upscale apartment which leads them to steal a car and hightail it to the airport. she wants to accompany him on his hunt for

Definitely not one of Nora Roberts best books but an enjoyable read nonetheless. Hot Ice is the tale of a thief and an heiress thrown together by chance on a quest to find a hidden cache of jewels. The majority of the story takes place in Madagascar and the description of the location is exquisite. With plenty of detail, I was able to immerse myself as if I were traveling with Doug and Whitney. Unfortunately, the characters are somewhat shallow and I never felt the chemistry between them (al More...

quick easy read, but has a lot of culture of Mozambique and historical backing of the French revolution. I really liked the aggressive lead female character in this book, Whitney who is willingly kidnapped from her privileged upper class New York life and becomes the financial backer for a thief. Not your usual rich girl! Very interesting plot that keeps you moving as the characters travel in pursuit of a treasure hidden by a loyal royal guard of Marie Antoinette, and as they try to not get kill More...

Definitely not one of my favorites from Roberts. I just couldn't get into the story line and I really disliked the characters. Whitney was just too cold and acted too much like a prima donna and Doug was just irritating. Trying to act noble when he really was just a thief.

And the idea of keeping a running total of how much he owed her really irritated me at parts. I mean, when how much someone owes someone else is brought up right in the middle or right before a sex scene.. come on.

CHEESY!!!

And if you're ok with cheese, it's not a bad book. My chief complaint is that they eat a lot of mangoes in this book...here's a quote...Pulling out a mango, he took a big, greedy bite. And they never peel them. Obviously the author has never eaten a mango. And that bugs me, because I love mangos, and...geesh, do a little research. But I guess mangos were more exotic in the 80s, and most readers didn't know you had to peel them.

So anyway.... think Romancing the S More...

Well this had to be one of the more enjoyable reads by this author for me.
"would be thief for hire" Douglas Lord has just finished a "job" lifting important papers that date back to Marie Antoinette and the lost french jewels that lead to a fortune in treasure. After almost turning over the papers he finds out he is to be double crossed & dumped in the nearest river, so he decides to keep them for himself, but he has to get to it before Dimitri & his goons get him first More...

Whitney MacAllister is gorgeous, reckless, and rich. Douglas Lord is a street-wise criminal with a weakness for literature--and beautiful jewels. Chased by gangsters who are trying to kill him, Lord jumps into Whitney's car at a street light and before he knows it, she's taking them on a wild chase across Manhattan to elude his killers. She probably saves his life, and although he is grateful, and attracted to the beautiful Whitney, what Lord really needs is to get to Madagascar, where he is sur More...

I am absolutely biased on this book, because I love it and always will. It was the first Nora Roberts book I read, and remains my favorite. I love this book, it reminds me so much of Romancing the Stone, and it mentions all kinds of cheesy 80's music that I love. It's just a fabulous adventure with a side of hot romance, with an awesome, fearless (or she convinces everyone she is, anyway), heroine, a spectacular Charming Rogue, and just so much fun.

I read this years ago. It was a throw in Christmas gift from my sister who LOVES Nora Roberts. She has me reading her now too. I do like a good romance, so long as it's written well and Nora Roberts can write a good story. This is one of those books that you should read when life is kind of stressful. Why, you ask, because it's a no brainer and not alot of thinking involved. It's just a nice story line with cute characters.

Douglas Lord is an elite thief who crosses paths with a wealthy daughter of an ice cream millionaire. She's just bored enough with her socialite existence to be open to financing Doug's caper to find a ransom in diamonds, but only if she goes along. Some bad people don't want them to be successful. They globe hop from Manhatten to Madagascar in their search, and along the way discover another passion: for each other.

Wow, has Nora Roberts ever gotten better in the last twenty years! I used to love her "two-word title" books which were always her mystery/romance books. I could barely make it through my 2006 re-read of "Hot Ice"! It was so repetitive, all the characters smoked a lot, and they were just dumb. What thief just gives out his name and travels with his own papers when being pursued by a Mafia God?

Less suspenseful and more outlandish, but a tried a true romance of it's era. Rich playgirl hooks up with a thief on the run through a bit of excitement seeking and then ends up running with him to capture the ultimate treasure before the man hunting them. Along the way, there are mishaps and near-misses that finally result in her Daddy coming along. Sad but true.

The girls starts off shallow for a second but then becomes whitty. Thats the only thing I liked about this book. The main guy was a theif whos name was doug or douglas- doesn't seem like the right name. The bad guys were typical bad guy names like Remo and Barns and Demitri. I know that doesn't matter but it bugged me.

I absolutly love this book! I fell in love with the cunning theif, Mr.Douglas Lord. I find the love/hate relationship between him and Whitney MacAllister absolutley interesting and I just love the way they both tried to one up each other. I plan on keeping this book near so I can read the sections I fell in-love with through out the book.

"Her elegant Bones", "her delicate skin" das kommt wirklich alle 2 Minuten im Hörbuch.

I have read many Nora Roberts and usually grow bored after a few pages because many, many of the books are all the same idea. This one was great. It wasn't the usual magical, sisters/friends/strangers, love story. It had action and intrigue in it. I would actually read it again.

Sometimes it was funny but mostly it was old. Old clichés and old jokes about the wealthy and the thief. If Whitney (the heroine) was supposed to be so smart, why did she act so stupid when it was serious troubles? Nah. Not my cup of tea.

Had to read a "fluff" book to get me out of the intense book I read prior to this. Typical Nora Roberts book about a rich girl who's abducted by a bad boy trying to find lost treasure. Naturally, they fall in love. OK, if you like those kinds of books!

Oh my gosh, so dated and so corny. I have a high corny threshold, but there are only so many times you can read the main character say, "listen lady" or "listen sugar." I think I just threw up a little bit.

WOW. IT HAS A WONDERFUL STORY. Whitney AND Douglas ARE ONE OF THE BEST COUPLE AMONG THE OTHER BOOKS I HAVE READ. THE BOOK MADE ME LAUGH, SMILE, AND ALSO TAUGHT ME SOME GOOD VALUE A PERSON NEEDS.
THE STORY WAS ALSO ADVENTUROUS

I stopped reading this after a while. It was too unreal, even for a story that is supposed to be kind of unreal.
The girl just wouldn't go off with this strange man dodging bullets from gangsters. No matter how much of a bored rich girl she was.

This book is suspiciously VERY similar to the movie Romancing the Stone...I'm not sure which came first.

OK, so the movie came first, but there is still really good banter between the leads. I liked it.
