I absoluteley loved, adored, rooted this book on until I turned to the very last page. Ugh...
Really, the illustrations are amazing, the text is fun, the choice of words, awesome... Even the feel of the paper and the choice of colors is just what I would have wished for on a book about apple pies and little girls and puppies...

Chalk this one up to another case of really bad manners. Here's the thing. There's this little dog who wants some of his (cute little girl) owner's apple pie. She eats her...more

Apple Pie ABC by Alison Murray starts with a girl baking an apple pie but soon revolves around a hungry black and white dog who must get a piece of that pie!

After a girl makes, bakes, cools and dishes out a slice of apple pie for herself, a little black and white dog gets a taste of a crumb of it, then works through the rest of the alphabet to get more apple pie.

The short, simple text serves up both an abc book and a cute story about a dog hungry for apple pie. The letters stand for various part...more

Not only am I hungry for Apple Pie, but the cover had a snoopy-like dog, which is always okay in my book (pun!). This made me smile; watching a cute dog 'pine' for some pie made me hope that he would get it! For a child, they'd likely do the same, and would learn something! This scenario is also very common among many households (the dog wanting human food), so there are different levels of interest. Obviously being a children's ABC picture book, it's an easy read, but it's easy in the sense tha...more

Nostalgic pictures with a Snoopy-like dog fill this book with charm. A scheming dog finally snatches and eats a pie that his little-girl owner won't let him have. The book progresses in short phrases beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Many are verb phrases, as in "B bake it C cool it D dish it out." I began to feel the dog's pain at that point as he watches his girl eat a piece without offering him any. The book built further with "Q quietly determined R ready S steady T time to go." As...more

Apple Pie ABC, written and illustrated by Alison Murray, depicts a puppy (who looks an awful lot like Snoopy to me) going to great lengths to get to a little girl's freshly made apple pie. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by the puppy doing something beginning with the letter to get the pie. I liked the pictures in this book, as well as the way they were laid out. The pictures had color, but stuck to a palate of mainly reds oranges and blues, and the patterned kitchen floor created som...more

Apple Pie ABC is a great ABC book by Alison Murray. This book goes through the entire alphabet, and for each letter there is a word or phrase that goes with each letter that is about apple pie. A little girl and her dog bake an apple pie. When it's done baking, the little girl puts it on the table to cool. The dogs tries to taste it, and gets in trouble. He keeps trying to get a taste throughout the story, and he ends up dumping the entire pie on the floor. He gets tired and full, and the story...more

The beagle's name, I find out from the book's website, is Georgie. And the little girl in the blue jumper is Grace. A is for apple pie, and B C and D are the verbs Grace uses to bake it, cool it, and dish it out. After that, it's all Georgie, finding a crumb on the floor and then obsessing over that fat pie, plotting and pining in a realistically single-minded puppy way. Alison Murray's text is cool and simple and perky, getting around the tricky letters so smartly that I had to go back and look...more

The dog steals the show in this ABC concept book. As a young girl bakes a pie and lets it cool, her dog becomes more and more determined to share in its deliciousness. The girl is oblivious to his begging and jumping, though, and shows him outside mercilessly. But he does not give up... back inside, he schemes until he finds a way to make the pie his own. Young readers will be fully engaged in his alphabetical thought process: "Apple pie-- Bake it-- Cool it-- Dish it out-- Eager for it-- Find a...more

Mix one apple pie, one cute girl and one absolutely adorable, determined puppy; stir in one concept and 26 beautiful, humorous illustrations and you have one great story time read aloud. My audience loved this book and loved yelling out each letter and reacting to the dogs actions. E is for "Eager for it" illustrated by the dog pushing his bowl to where the girl and the pie sit at the kitchen table...I is for in trouble - as the girl chastises the dog for jumping at the table. In the end the "qu...more

An ABC book with a tail/tale to tell. Georgie the dog is tantalised by a freshly baked apple pie. The illustrations tell the story with minimal text, and they capture the thoughts and actions of the dog beautifully. The end papers give more to talk about what goes into an apple pie too! I aim to read this will all my groups, I think thet'll all love it (at different levels). Disappointed that it didn't show lower as well as upper case letters. There is a discrepancy between the case of the lette...more

This week's library book bundle is Cake and Pie themed (which, of course me and my sweet tooth couldn't resist!). This was the first book from the bundle, and it's a winner. I loved the illustrations, which are bold and have a retro feel. I loved how cleverly the author included each letter of the alphabet in the tale of a dog attemping to sneak a taste of apple pie. My baby was very enthusiastic about the illustrations. There was a lot of arm flailing and excited shrieking while we read this on...more

A small black-and-white dog desperately wants a piece of apple pie in this alphabetical story. It all starts with a girl making A for apple pie and a happily sleeping dog. But as soon as the pie is in the oven with B for bake it, the dog is very interested in the pie. Then the pie must C for cool it and D for dish it out. Though the girl gets to eat some pie, the dog must make due with just a crumb. But after that one delicious crumb, he just can’t stop thinking about eating pie! This cheery pic...more

Reading Level: Ages 3 - 5

Library Lady's dog here. I saw this alphabet book today and it kept me on the edge of my dog bed! The poor little puppy in the book really wants some apple pie, but his mean human won't let him have any! He even gets scolded when he tries to have a lick of it, like that is something wrong to do. Luckily there is a happy ending.

A little white dogs longs for a taste of apple pie. Retro style of illustrations, bold outlines, large square size make it a good choice for sharing. For an ABC book, has a narrative that can read aloud. Nice vocabulary, as the dog does "ogle" and "pine" for it. And a very appealing little dog. I love the last page where the dog lies sleeping, satisfied, with his round belly accentuated by the round dimple of the armchair cushion beneath.

I wasn't sure that an alphabet book could tell a story about apple pie, but it managed to do just that. Our girls are getting a little too big for these kinds of books (or so they tell me), but since apple pie is one of our oldest's favorite desserts, she was willing to make an exception. The simple narrative and fun illustrations wove a creative tale that is fun to read aloud. We enjoyed reading this book together. Recommended for ages 3-5.

Another great read aloud for the pre-school set. A super book to read about the alphabet about a dog that wants to eat the delicious apple pie a girl is making. Usually alphabet books don't work as a read aloud because they are too long. This was awesome, with the children saying each letter as I got to each page. Also great, since there was some new vocabulary to share. This would also work for a dog or apple theme story time.

ABC books are usually so boring and drawn out, and they almost never have stories, with makes them challenging for Read-alouds and storytimes. I like Apple Pie ABC because it focuses on story rather that just vocabulary, though with words like "pine" "oogle" and "miserable," it will introduce new vocabulary to your child. (These are probably more bi-products of the fact it was originally a Latvian book, but it's cool nevertheless.)

Another niece gift book. (She's gonna get a lotta books from us!)

Saw in the GR comments that some people didn't think the book taught a good lesson. I think it perfectly teaches the lesson that dogs like people food (including apple pie) and will do "bad things" to get what they want. Kids need to learn the thinking process for dogs and here it is: Smell something. Eat it. Nap.

Charlotte Zolotow Honor Award - This is an adorable story written as an ABC book. A young girl bakes an Apple Pie. The dog watches her make it and eat a slice. The dog then schemes how to get some for him/herself. The process of the dog being E for Eager for it all the way to ZZZZ dreaming of it is fun, and rather true to a dog's personality. This book would be fun for ages 2-6.

Just when I was thinking, "who really needs another alphabet book?"...I picked up this delightful read! A stalwart review of the letters of the alphabet accentuates a gleeful plot line--with both simple text and illustration each adding to the fun--about one character's dogged determination to get some apple pie! An impressive picture book and quite a lot of fun.

I grew up with the Kate Greenaway book so I was predisposed to like this one too! The illustrations are charming, the block-print feel of the pictures gives this version its own old-fashioned flavor. Lots of great details, like the dog's tail twirling in a circle of anticipation before he makes a break for the pie.

This was my favorite children's book discovered in Barne's & Noble last weekend. An ABC book that tells the story of a freshly baked apple pie and the dog's attempts to get it and eat it! It was so creative and not your typical ABCs - but teaches such great words to strengthen a new reader's vocabulary!
Samantha
A declisiously cute alphabet story centered around one determined dog's plot to get a taste of sweet apple pie! Simple illustrations give the book a vintage feel and the story progresses at a steady pace without any awkward letter intrusions. This would be a great display title as well as a storytime read!

"What a great alphabet offering! Each letter adds a word or two to the story of a little Snoopy-esque dog who is pining for some apple pie. Creative and simple." - Becky, Teen Librarian

The classically styled illustrations and simple color scheme in this book are visually appealing. The writing is creative, creating a story as you progress through the alphabet. Some of the vocabulary was a little advanced for my 3yo, but still a wonderful example of an alphabet book.

I highly recommend this creative alphabet book. A little girl bakes an apple pie and her floppy eared dog wants some... we go through all the letters of the alphabet "J jump up for it, K kept away from it,L leave without it". The retro inspired illustrations are especially appealing.-AM

Apple pie ABC by Alison Murray

The pictures have a simplicity about them. The ABC story makes a story – the tale of a little dog whose little girl bakes an apple pie and how much he wants it….

Pictures in blocks and simple colours – have a 50s feel about it. Light touch.

Thank you, Professor Nana, for recommending this ABC book. The illustrations have a classic feel and draw upon the pacing of the alphabet to tell the story of a dog who tries to be good. But who can be good when their is hot-baked apple pie so near and so accessible.

Rosalia
The illustrations feel very simple in a nice way. The colors are more muted. Seeing everything the dog does to try and get to the apple pie is funny and had me cracking up. Not sure how it will fair for story time but it is my back up book.

Fun story about a dog who would really like to have a piece of the apple pie. This ABC book goes starts with the pie is all set to go in the oven and what you do while waiting for it to be done. Easy read with easy to follow pictures.
