This is probably the best book on motherhood I have ever read and I would encourage, exhort every mother to read it through. I'm not so good at writing reviews and this won't do justice to the content of the book, but I'll give it a go...
Fleming challenges the mother to look carefully into the Scriptures and then a hard look at applying it skillfully as a mother. She elevates the role of mother as something to aspire to with laudable merits and high standards. She makes motherhood attractive and...more

"Was it really necessary for these women to experience the agony of a long wait? Yes, there was a purpose. God had something special in mind. He wanted to give each of these mothers a special child-a child with a specific purpose-and He wanted to receive the glory. Everyone must know that God did it. The awe and wonder of conception is often lost on us, since almost anyone can conceive - rich or poor, educated or uneducated, godly or ungodly. We can easily forget the part God plays in ev...more

This book came to me at the perfect time in my life! I found myself reading out loud to Josh and really taking to heart what the author had to say. Practical advice and insight for moms who are in the trenches with their young children everyday. I will hold onto this book and re-read it for sure! I should just read it continuously to keep those thoughts fresh in my mind! Amazing- if you are a Christian mom, I would highly recommend this book!
I'd rate this a 4.5. Great inspirational book on mothering. At some points I felt overwhelmed by her advice, but maybe I was just having a stressful day in Mothering Land and that wasn't what I needed to read at that point! :) Such great advice and tips, and the first foreward made me laugh out loud! Teaches you to be your child's teacher, how to pray specifically for your child and their future, to not fear. To feel confident in mothering how God called you to, while letting others parent how t...more

A Mother’s Heart: A Look at Values, Vision, and Character of the Christian Mother by Jean Fleming – Encouragement to moms of all ages and backgrounds by showing women how to distinguish between their role and God’s role in raising children, explaining how to take a spiritual inventory of a child’s life, and discussing how to pray effectively for children.
This book has shaped me as a mother. It has inspired and challenged me. I first read it for a young moms Bible study/book club and have come back to it numerous times through the years. I am now leading a book club of young moms through it. Even as a mother of 14, 12, 10 & 9 year olds, I am still gleaning so much practical wisdom. Jean Fleming writes with such grace, creativity, and encouragement. Some parts of the book are ideal for young, pre-school children. Other parts, like the Spiritua...more
My favorite quotes:
"A mother's presence throughout infancy and the entire preschool stage is important because more learning takes place in the child's first five years than in any comparable period of life. Experts agree that as much as eighty-five percent of a child's character is developed by age five, and the way a child is raised in the early years accounts for at least twenty points of his IQ." (page 19)
"But we should all pray, read God's Word, seek counsel, wait on God's peace in our hear...more

I'm so glad I read this before I actually had any children. It has encouraged me so much in the role I'm about to step into - its importance and beauty and the inevitable struggles that await me. But Jean Fleming does SUCH a wonderful job citing Scriptures and applying them to motherhood and gives great examples from raising her own children. My favorite chapter was "Roots and Wings" when she describes lots of creative ideas you can use with your own children to inspire them at home and then enc...more

This is such a great book for first-time mom's! My standard gift. Jean's insights and funny stories strike a key that resonates with a new and struggling mom.
I read this with my mom's group. It was the perfect book for such a group. Timeless in subject matter, it provided a wonderful starting point from which to discuss motherhood. I plan to keep the book as I'm quite sure I'll refer back to it from time to time.
(NOTE TO SELF: particularly appreciated the chapter on "guiding weaknesses" rather than changing them.)
