In its first two years of production in Italy, Dario Fo's notorious Accidental Death of an Anarchist was seen by over half a million people. It has since been performed all over the world, and become a classic of twentieth-century drama. A sharp and hilarious satire on police corruption, it concerns the case of an anarchist railway worker who, in 1969, 'fell' to his death ...more

Dario Fo, the Nobel prize winner in 1997, is something of a phenomenon: the brilliant, absurdist, ultra-leftist, anti-fascist Italian playwright, known (along with his wife, Franca Rame, who was kidnapped and raped by Neofascist thugs associated with the carabinieri, police, in 1973) for farce, absurdist comedy, and for wild slapstick one-man improvisational shows.

This Methuen edition is quite good. It contains a detailed biographical chronology, a long scholarly essay on Fo’s use of farce (and

This is very much theatre of the absurd. It is a chilling comedy of true events and makes me wonder if Dario Fo was friends with Mikhail Bulgakov. Both of them have a highly developed sense of cynical, sardonic humour and cruelty.

Definitely a 5 star read.

I read this for an essay I am writing on theatrical responses to terrorism.

I feel like this play was very much of its' time. It was written to provide information about the 1969 Piazza Fontanna Massacre in Milan because the press and authorities were being very hush about it and whether Pinelli fell out the window or was pushed.

I feel like with most plays it's difficult to rate them as literature as a lot of plays (especially this one) are written for performance, not to be read.

It'll be useful

The Accidental Death of an Anarchist is a fabulous, interesting play. I'm still chuckling over how to explain it.

On one hand it's actually quite horrible- it's based on true events, and the farcical nature of how the events are dealth with are insulting to humanity (it's quite honestly that bad!) But on the other hand, the absurdity is also hilarious. So, what to do.

One must keep in mind that the humour of the absurdity masking the blatant AWEFULNESS was precisely what Fo intended. The laughte

This is one of the funniest things I've seen all year, and there is an important truth underneath it. It's hard not to laugh at the slapstick farce, where maniacs swallow their own glass eyes and nearly shove people out the window. But you do realize that Fo is telling a story about people dying mysteriously in police custody, and this still happens - almost right outside the theater.

HILARIOUS! I have only come across fewer books that made me burst out with unexpected violent fits of laughter as this one did.

Fo's play has the commedia-dell’arte touch. Fo's character, Maniac is a harliquien-like character, leads the members of a police station somewhere in a city, through a dizzying investigation around the questionable death of an anarchist who mysteriously, had "thrown" himself from a four story window during the course of police investigation. ....really, it's quite impos

Very well done! Having both the elements of the farce and the absurdist play, this is a commentary on political corruption and is executed with great wit and thoughtfulness. My first of Fo, and I'm looking forward to reading more by the playwright. This is recommended!

I love how Dario Fo chooses a mad man to prove his point regarding an 'accidental' death of an anarchist. The dialogues are brilliant and so is the word play. His take on capitalism, on police men and the government is absolute universal truth. I love the part where he declares that we need a scandal to vent our anger out on the govt. not actually to deal with it. we simply want a juicy topic of discussion.
