part of the fun of working with kids and books is catching up on YA lit and inhabiting the mind of a 12-year old for a few weeks. this book, the first in a series, is completely hokey, with cheesy dialogue and a cartoonish villain, but it works. a boy stumbles upon a 1909 honus wagner baseball card in an old lady's attic, a monumental discovery in and of itself, but then learns he can bring the player to life and travel back through time just by touching it, to the year on the card. forget kids,...more

I've read most of the books of this series but this book is probably my favorite. This text tells the story of the Stoshack family. They are extremly poor and need some money and they need it fast. So Joey Stoshack a kid was offered to clean the attic of their neighbor Mrs. Young. She offered to pay him five dollars. Finally he expecpted. I can tell you the attic very messy. When he's about to finish he notices a box of baseball cards. There he finds magic, a very rare baseball card, reading Hon...more

Honus and Me written by Dan Gutman was the first book of the series but not the best. It was also the first book of the series i had read and was like no other book I have read.Joe Stoshack a baseball extrordinare supposedly, was rambling through his neighbors basement {a job he hardly gets paid for} and stumbled upon a T-206 Honus Wagner baseball card the most valuable card in the world, and when he held it, and i quote ''the first time i touched a baseball card i felt a tingling sensation all...more

A cute book. Joe Stoshack discovers a rare Honus Wagner card, and is suddenly able to bring Wagner into the 90s. Honus and Joe discuss baseball (obviously), and Honus gives Joe the mental tools to being a better baseball player.

I have to say, I liked Gutman's The Homework Machine better than this, but this one is still good. It would especially be good for young baseballers who perhaps don't like to read -- it has enough baseball talk in it (stats, discussion of Joe's little league g...more

While cleaning out her neighbor's attic, Joe Stoshack comes across the most valuable card in baseball history: Honus Wagner. Even more remarkable is what happens that night.

Hokey but nice. Hans seems like a cool guy - gotta love baseball back when guys lived their entire life in one town. Baseball fans will love this: the rivalry between Ty Cobb and Honus, the attitude toward fans and salaries presented by Honus, along with his stories, the 1909 World series, and the chance of finding the...more

Joe Stoshack loves baseball, and he knows everything there is to know about it except he can’t play if his life depended on it. He’s specialty great on striking out. His nickname is Stosh. The story starts out when he takes a low-paying job cleaning a bunch of old junk out of his neighbor's attic .Which makes it more bored until he comes across a little piece of cardboard that takes his breath away. He can hardly believe his eyes. Stosh has stumbled upon a T-206 Honus Wagner one of the most ...more

I've been meaning to start in on this series for ever. A boy who's really into them got me going. Clever, and the timelessness of the game of baseball makes it easy to connect to the past (the rivalry between Wagner and Ty Cobb seems especially contemporary). Stosh's atypical (or perhaps prototypical) family--divorced parents who struggle financially--are nicely limned. Next, "Mickey and Me"....because I grew up in NYC when Mantle was a star and battled Maris to be the first to bre...more

***children's book.

This was an excellent time travel adventure for kids. A boy finds a famous baseball card while cleaning the attic of his neighbor. It makes him feel tingly. The player and he can time travel back and forth. There is a bit of a mystery and a satisfying ending.

I recommend this especially to kids who love baseball. Most of his other books have to do with baseball too.

These books are great and easy to read. Anyone would like these and I think they will want to read them again. I've read all of them. Here is the order that I know of.

*1. Honus & Me
*2. Babe & Me
*3. Shoeless Joe & Me
4. Jackie & Me
5. Satch & Me (haven't read)
6. Mickey & Me

*=positive that is the right order

Nate kept raving about this book so I read it. I am not too interested in Sports but this is a small book and I found myself wishing the story was a little longer. Honus Wagner was one of the greatest all-around baseball player in history, but the great parts of the book are when he tells his stories.

Used to read this author when I was a kid... his books aren't half bad, but they are not great either. His books gives good insight on history and society during the depression and other dark times.

It's really one of the best short novels (novella?) That I've ever read, especially for young readers. It's the type that mixes history with magic, like a well blended smootie, yum.

Time travel and history are two things that when mix together bring about a great read. Dan Gutman makes the characters real to life!
