Get your Goodreads on the go with the new mobile site!
posted by Otis on March, 28 1

We launched a mobile site a little while back, and after a month of testing and tweaking it, it's now live for all to use! We optimized for iPhone & Blackberry, but it should work well on any mobile phone with internet browsing capabilities. You don't even have to do anything, just go to Goodreads on your mobile phone and we should auto-detect that you are on a phone and show you the mobile version of the site.

The mobile site is a lightweight version of the regular site that should meet the most basic mobile needs. Right now you can:
  • browse your shelves
  • search for books
  • add books to your read, currently-reading, and to-read shelves
  • update your status for books on your currently-reading shelf

It you have feedback or would like request more features please join in the discussion.

If your phone for some reason doesn't auto-detect that you are on a mobile device, you can reach the mobile site directly by going to http://www.goodreads.com/mobile.

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like on an iPhone:

1512958 That's a great feature! I would definitley use this (if I had an iPhone or Blackberry, that is..)

message 3: by Cherie (new)

1019558 Awesome! It automatically detected and directed me to the mobile site from my Kindle. :)

1 Cherie - that is cool! I had noticed that too but forgot to mention it :)

1167793 Looks pretty good on my Blackberry -- I've been testing it for days. It doesn't let me add a star rating, but that could be on my end.

This is going to make book shopping SO much easier. Will there eventually be a 'no graphics' option for this?

message 7: by Michelle M. (new)

355739 BlackBerry user. I've been loving this. Very easy to use. Star rating would be nice, though, whenever ya'll have the chance. Thanks for making adding books and status posting easy!

1657008 FINALLY!!! LOL. I keep checking my AppStore for a GoodReads app but this will do!

1522134 Does this mean that when I go on goodreads on my iPod Touch it'll go to the mobile one? Or will it just be the reguar one?

882233 wow! I was waiting for this like for ever! now I can be in GoodReads anytime, and btw it does go to the mobile one in my iPod Touch 2G.

looks amazing.. thanks a lot :)

750242 mobile goodreads is an awesome website. I used it in the bookstore the other day to look up my to-buy list. it was quit and efficient. I loved it! great job!!!

message 14: by Jasmine (new)

948622 i didn't realize it was available until i tried it a few days ago while in a bookstore. i couldn't remember the name of i book i wanted.

yay!!

I hope it doesn't because I prefer using the regular goodreads on my iPod(because I can message and post in groups)

171430 The mobile site has a link back to the regular site.

message 17: by Anna (new)

1821630 is there a way to sort a shelf? when at a bookstore, it would be easier to find a book from my To Read shelf if we could sort by author's name.

message 18: by Natasha (new)

1045275 I often nab my fiance's phone to go online and found to my delight that the mobile site is awesome.

message 19: by Anna (new)

314550 I always feel like I end up clicking on the "go to the non-mobile page" link because the mobile page seemed too dumbed down. Like, for example, when I get an e-mail update from someone on my Blackberry and I click that link, the page that opens in the browser shows me what I am currently reading, not the updates from my friends. I'm using a Blackberry -- maybe this just something that happens with my version of the phone -- but I end up going to the non-mobile version anyway...

message 20: by Bendomolena!!! (new)

1120509 yeah, if i could post on groups w/ the mobile site, i'd use it, but even on my friends 1st gen iphone compared to a 3rd gen, the non mobile site works fine.

913644 I wish you were able to go to your inbox.

852869 Helpful in a book store yesterday! Thanks

message 23: by Erik (new)

205800 I’ve been using this to do status updates and I love it. I find that by posting status updates I get more of a feel for what I was thinking as I read the book, instead of just trying to sum it up afterward. Thanks and good job!

message 24: by Severine (new)

1583924 I'm a SE user.
I really love it.
It used less data comparing the original version and more practical.

348055 Splendid innovation! thx Otis and friends.

message 26: by Lois (new)

2159849 thanx otis, it's usefull.

message 27: by Kristen (new)

1116185 Very fun... I agree that I would like to be able to date and star books I read. Looks fairly good on a Blackberry!

Messaging would also be nice (as in inbox, not IM)

message 28: by David (new)

930562 Someone above already said it, but I will repeat that it would be nice to order your bookshelf so it is easier to find a particular book while in the bookstore.

1262578 I don't have an iPhone or a Blackberry (I have a Verizon Samsung Sway), but the mobile Goodreads works fine on my phone - it's great!

message 33: by Sarah (new)

122647 Is the mobile site the only part of Goodreads that's working right now? I haven't been able to add reviews or anything for about 18 hours. Every link to a book brings up an error page.

message 34: by Jacqueline (new)

1262578 I don't think so...it's working fine for me...

message 35: by Bryan (new)

Nophoto-m-25x33 Can you add links to our friend list from the mobile app? I like to access my friends books while I'm at the store or on the go. I couldn't figure out how to get there without going to the full site. Thanks, it looks great so far!

message 36: by Jill (new)

177227 Perfect for shopping!

message 37: by Leslie (new)

Nophoto-f-25x33 Does anyone know the NAME of the application? when I search for it in the app's section nothing for good reads comes up?

message 38: by Kathy (new)

147686 Hooray! Works great on my wifi enabled Palm PDA. My only request would be a way to turn off the book cover pix on the mobile version, as they take up most of the screen.

message 39: by Kathy (new)

147686 Leslie wrote: "Does anyone know the NAME of the application? when I search for it in the app's section nothing for good reads comes up?"
You just go there in your web browser. No app needed.

424383 Great news! My cell phone is on its last legs and I'm getting an iPhone next. This will be fun to use. Thank you!

message 41: by Tony (new)

Nophoto-m-25x33 This is a helpful development. However, in the April newsletter, this mobile site was erroneously described as "Our New Mobile App" -- a site optimized for mobile devices is NOT an app.

message 42: by Mary Beth (new)

735590 I wished they had an actual "app" that doesn't require wifi to be able to use it

message 43: by Sella (new)

909992 This would be cool if I HAD a cellphone. lol...oh and can someone answer Michelle's question? Because I'm also wondering that. (message 1)

message 44: by Jacqueline (new)

1262578 what question?

message 45: by Otis (new)

1 Posting on groups is not yet a part of the mobile site, but I'm noting a few votes to add it.

Okay, thanks. Count my vote in. :D

Nophoto-f-25x33 This is cool. I would love to see better mobile access to the message boards.

message 48: by Shane (new)

1357384 any chance of an actual iphone app?

message 49: by Anita (new)

174921 Fabulous! Now when I go to the library, I don't have to rack my brain for what I want to read!!! Thanks, goodreads!
