Get your Goodreads on the go with the new mobile site!

Posted by Otis on March 28, 2009 1

We launched a mobile site a little while back, and after a month of testing and tweaking it, it's now live for all to use! We optimized for iPhone & Blackberry, but it should work well on any mobile phone with internet browsing capabilities. You don't even have to do anything, just go to Goodreads on your mobile phone and we should auto-detect that you are on a phone and show you the mobile version of the site.

The mobile site is a lightweight version of the regular site that should meet the most basic mobile needs. Right now you can:
  • browse your shelves
  • search for books
  • add books to your read, currently-reading, and to-read shelves
  • update your status for books on your currently-reading shelf

It you have feedback or would like request more features please join in the discussion.

If your phone for some reason doesn't auto-detect that you are on a mobile device, you can reach the mobile site directly by going to http://www.goodreads.com/mobile.

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like on an iPhone:

message 2: by Just Plain Ray (new)

Just Plain Ray That's a great feature! I would definitley use this (if I had an iPhone or Blackberry, that is..)

message 3: by Cherie (new)

Cherie Awesome! It automatically detected and directed me to the mobile site from my Kindle. :)

message 4: by Otis (new)

Otis Chandler Cherie - that is cool! I had noticed that too but forgot to mention it :)

Penguin Its really big on PC

message 6: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze BlackBerry user. I've been loving this. Very easy to use. Star rating would be nice, though, whenever ya'll have the chance. Thanks for making adding books and status posting easy!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

FINALLY!!! LOL. I keep checking my AppStore for a GoodReads app but this will do!

message 8: by Sarahcorn (new)

Sarahcorn Does this mean that when I go on goodreads on my iPod Touch it'll go to the mobile one? Or will it just be the reguar one?

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah wrote: "Does this mean that when I go on goodreads on my iPod Touch it'll go to the mobile one? Or will it just be the reguar one?" It should go to the mobile one... on my iphone, it did. otherwise, just enter the mobile URL.

message 11: by Abdullah (new)

Abdullah wow! I was waiting for this like for ever! now I can be in GoodReads anytime, and btw it does go to the mobile one in my iPod Touch 2G.

looks amazing.. thanks a lot :)

message 12: by ZaBeth (new)

ZaBeth mobile goodreads is an awesome website. I used it in the bookstore the other day to look up my to-buy list. it was quit and efficient. I loved it! great job!!!

message 13: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine i didn't realize it was available until i tried it a few days ago while in a bookstore. i couldn't remember the name of i book i wanted.

yay!!

I hope it doesn't because I prefer using the regular goodreads on my iPod(because I can message and post in groups)

message 15: by rivka (new)

rivka The mobile site has a link back to the regular site.

message 16: by Anna (new)

Anna is there a way to sort a shelf? when at a bookstore, it would be easier to find a book from my To Read shelf if we could sort by author's name.

message 17: by Anna (new)

Anna I always feel like I end up clicking on the "go to the non-mobile page" link because the mobile page seemed too dumbed down. Like, for example, when I get an e-mail update from someone on my Blackberry and I click that link, the page that opens in the browser shows me what I am currently reading, not the updates from my friends. I'm using a Blackberry -- maybe this just something that happens with my version of the phone -- but I end up going to the non-mobile version anyway...

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah, if i could post on groups w/ the mobile site, i'd use it, but even on my friends 1st gen iphone compared to a 3rd gen, the non mobile site works fine.

message 19: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy I wish you were able to go to your inbox.

message 20: by LaSchelle (new)

LaSchelle Helpful in a book store yesterday! Thanks

message 21: by Erik (new)

Erik Mallinson I’ve been using this to do status updates and I love it. I find that by posting status updates I get more of a feel for what I was thinking as I read the book, instead of just trying to sum it up afterward. Thanks and good job!

message 22: by Severine (new)

Severine I'm a SE user.
I really love it.
It used less data comparing the original version and more practical.

message 23: by bungabungakecil (new)

bungabungakecil thanx otis, it's usefull.

message 24: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Very fun... I agree that I would like to be able to date and star books I read. Looks fairly good on a Blackberry!

Messaging would also be nice (as in inbox, not IM)

message 25: by David (new)

David Johnson Someone above already said it, but I will repeat that it would be nice to order your bookshelf so it is easier to find a particular book while in the bookstore.

message 26: by Janeen-san (new)

Janeen-san COOL! Now I wish I had a phone

message 28: by iHeyam (new)

iHeyam Thanks, its very helpful

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't have an iPhone or a Blackberry (I have a Verizon Samsung Sway), but the mobile Goodreads works fine on my phone - it's great!

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Sammis Is the mobile site the only part of Goodreads that's working right now? I haven't been able to add reviews or anything for about 18 hours. Every link to a book brings up an error page.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think so...it's working fine for me...

message 32: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Can you add links to our friend list from the mobile app? I like to access my friends books while I'm at the store or on the go. I couldn't figure out how to get there without going to the full site. Thanks, it looks great so far!

message 33: by Jill (new)

Jill Perfect for shopping!

message 34: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Schoeb Does anyone know the NAME of the application? when I search for it in the app's section nothing for good reads comes up?

message 35: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Hooray! Works great on my wifi enabled Palm PDA. My only request would be a way to turn off the book cover pix on the mobile version, as they take up most of the screen.

message 36: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Leslie wrote: "Does anyone know the NAME of the application? when I search for it in the app's section nothing for good reads comes up?"
You just go there in your web browser. No app needed.

message 37: by Karey (new)

Karey Great news! My cell phone is on its last legs and I'm getting an iPhone next. This will be fun to use. Thank you!

message 38: by Tony (new)

Tony This is a helpful development. However, in the April newsletter, this mobile site was erroneously described as "Our New Mobile App" -- a site optimized for mobile devices is NOT an app.

message 39: by Mary Beth (new)

Mary Beth I wished they had an actual "app" that doesn't require wifi to be able to use it

message 40: by Sella (new)

Sella Malin This would be cool if I HAD a cellphone. lol...oh and can someone answer Michelle's question? Because I'm also wondering that. (message 1)

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

what question?

message 42: by Otis (new)

Otis Chandler Posting on groups is not yet a part of the mobile site, but I'm noting a few votes to add it.

Okay, thanks. Count my vote in. :D

message 44: by Evelynn (new)

Evelynn Passino This is cool. I would love to see better mobile access to the message boards.

message 45: by Max (new)

Max Renn any chance of an actual iphone app?

message 46: by Anita (new)

Anita Fabulous! Now when I go to the library, I don't have to rack my brain for what I want to read!!! Thanks, goodreads!

message 47: by Hector (new)

Hector im need its please

On my iPod touch 2nd generation it redirected me to the Goodreads Mobile site after I typed in www.goodreads.com. If it doesn't work for you, though, go to www.goodreads.com/mobile on your iPod touch and it works (I tried it).
