The title poem from my book Unscrambled Eggs was inspired by Joel Osteen, the pastor of the nondenominational Lakewood Mega-Church in Houston, Texas. His sermon about not letting your past-- no matter what you’ve been through-- determine your future made quite an impression on me. But as simple as that message is, we often allow the past to define our lives. We live by our failures; our setbacks oftentimes, dictates our being.
After writing the poem Unscrambled Eggs, I didn’t realize it would become the title of my first, and latest collection of poetry. The idea behind Unscrambled Eggs wasn’t plotted like characters from a Nora Roberts’ novel. It was an organic process-- I lived the poems I wrote from my experience. However, not every poem I write tells my story. Some, tell the stories of others. Or it may have been an issue God placed in my heart to touch upon.
I often thought I would be published when I was a "seasoned writer." What writing knowledge I do have was self-taught. I have no formal training as a writer: I learned to write poetry by reading Psalms from the Bible and by emulating poets I admired. Maya Angelou by far is my favorite poet. Though there are poets who aren't well-known who have really shaped my writing style. I most enjoy reading and writing poems that informs, offers value, add depth and gives meaning to the daily lives of readers. I believe that Unscrambled Eggs encompasses all those traits without being overtly preachy. Though the overall theme of the book is about one's purpose, it is not a how-to-book, but a source with which readers can relate to in some form. In short, Unscrambled Eggs was a belief that evolved over time. I credit life's lessons as the prime inspiration for this book.
