One of the things I love about writing Violet's ability is coming up with the echoes of the dead because I can let my imagination run wild. I literally have lists of ideas, and I'll write them down on anything: scraps of paper, receipts, my hand, depending on where I am when inspiration strikes. The best part, they're totally random!

Some are better than others, like: Brain-freeze

And others…maybe not so good, like: Cat breath

Usually, I just come across something in my everyday life that, for whatever reason, has an impact. Like the smell of sunscreen, which triggers these great childhood memories of hot summer days, Popsicles, and swimming pools with too much chlorine.

Will these "echoes" actually make it into the books? Who knows. (Okay, cat breath…probably not.) But I love the randomness of them.

So here's what I want from you (you knew this was coming, didn't you???), I want to know what echoes you can come up with. Be serious or be ridiculous. Be succinct or long-winded. I don't care, just be creative!

The Echoes of the Dead Contest will run until Feb. 10th, when I will choose one random winner to receive a signed, FINISHED copy of Desires of the Dead along with this brand-spanking-new Desires of the Dead cinch bag!

AND! I may just use one of your "echoes" in an upcoming book!

C'mon, you know you wanna!!!!

Liliana ♥s Mythology "Usually, I just come across something in my everyday life that, for whatever reason, has an impact. Like the smell of sunscreen, which triggers these great childhood memories of hot summer days, Popsicles, and swimming pools with too much chlorine."
There is actually a part in your brain that specializes in this^^^ its called the medial olfactory area which is responsible for emotional responses to odors (plus some other things). I know that was random but I'm taking an Anatomy and Physiology class and it is soooo interesting that I can apply it to anything!! (Weird, I know lol)

Anyway, randomness put aside, this is a way cool contest. I am going to try it out. But first, I have to get my creative juices flowing. Be back later :P lol

Kimberly Derting Can't wait to see what you come up with! And I LOVE random facts.

Liliana ♥s Mythology Hehehe

Lets see what I got:
*Smell of rain
*The feeling of popping candy on your tongue (I think its called Pop Rocks)
*Ringing in your ears
*A glow around the person/body...Like a falme outlining the person/body
*Feeling of shocks (like when you drag you feet across the carpet while wearing socks and you go an touch someone lol)
*Sound of thunder
*feeling of eyelashes brushing against your skin (as if someone was blinking to close to you. Weird, I know lol) Or maybe a blush/eyeshadow brush passing lightly over your skin.
*Feeling of falling (like the very first drop of a rollercoaster. Or the Panic Plunge from Silverwood Theme Park! Or maybe not that extreme...maybe the feeling when a plane is going down and about to land)
*The sound of the refrigerator humming
*Taste of sour candy (Uh, like WarHeads)
* A foggy-ness surrounding the person/body but still being able to see the person/body itself through the fog
*Same thing as the last one^^^ but this time with a shadow
*Sparkles surrounding the person/body (as if they were in a blob of glitter)...or even on their skin (yes, like the Twilight vampires lol)
*The smell of your clothes after a campfire
*Minty taste

I think thats it lol
Is it okay if I leave it here, or should I put it on your website?

Alicia That's awesome that you're asking us!

let's see, some echoes could be:

-tingling in the area that someone was physically hurt causing their death
- smell of freshly cut grass
- lip/eye twitching
- feeling of wet clay on your hands! (it's a weird feeling!)
- sound of laughter
- the sound of glass breaking or metal scratching
- finger nails on chalk board
- aura like colors
- irrational emotions
- christmas lights/snow

message 9: by Pam (new)

Pam Leffler This is probably going to be one of the weirdest ones...but here goes. My husband says I'm strange, but I have a fascination with my fingernails. They're not long and pretty or even polished. I like them to be rubbed. So more times then not, you'll see my running a finger across my nails. Or rubbing my nails across a wet glass. I can't explain it...it's a soothing feeling. I almost feel like I need to attend an anonymous group! I'm not sure where this came from, but I've had this fascination for as long as I can remember... (My husband wonders if my mother maybe rubbed my nails as a kid?) I just didn't realize it until my husband pointed it out. Anytime he would hold my hand, I would be rubbing my nails on his fingers... Ehhh...don't hate me because I'm weird!!

I would also say...

The smell of a sprinkler.

The way a breeze blows in through a window and wafts laundry soap and spring through the room.. (That totally takes me back to nap time in my Holly Hobbie room!!)

The taste of melting ice. Or crunching it.

The way your lips feel after eating Salt and Vinegar chips.

The sounds when you go underwater and just close your eyes and listen.

Am I doing this right? Or did I totally miss the point and make myself look like a goober? ;)

message 10: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Derting Pam - You're doing these exactly right! This is what my lists look like.

message 11: by Pam (new)

Pam Leffler :) I'll see what else I can come up with.

message 12: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Ok I think I get the idea... I really want to give this a try so here I go.

~The twist in your stomach like when... you are uncomfortable or something like that. (Or when you eat something bad.)
(your cat breath inspired me)~The feel of a cat (or some other animal) brushing ageist your leg
~The smell of fire/smoke
~The sound of a storm ageist a window. (Snow/Rain)
~The smell of fresh paint
~The smell of cold (like when you walk into a dark cold empty room that smells cold)
~The sound of a river/stream (or waves)
~The smell of salt-water/river-water/muddy-water
~The taste of strawberries
~The taste of lemonade
~The taste of homemade cookies
~The smell of wood
~The feel of your had near a flame
~The smell of wine
~The sound of quite in a crowded room
Ok I think thats all I have for now. =)But now that I'm thinking about it I'm sure I'll think of more throughout the day.

message 13: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Wolf I thought of a really good one. In the first week of january As I was going to class at 7 o'clock in the morning I looked down at the ground which was covered in frost and it sparkled like silver pixie dust. It was very pretty and I stared at the ground almost the entire time it took me to get to class.
I only remembered it recently and thought it would make a good echo.

message 16: by Bethyohnoes (new)

- fingernails down a chalkboard
- smell of roses
- that really high pitched sound you get in your ears sometimes
- might be a bit strange...but the feel of butterflies fluttering over your skin or petals

- a haze of humidity, like on a road when it's really hot
I hope these helped a bit, and hopefully i'll write more soon.

message 18: by Imo :D (Omnom Books) (last edited Feb 06, 2011 11:35pm) (new)

Imo :D (Omnom Books) hey, back again, i couldn't help noticing some things today and thought that they might make good echoes.
So...
- Wings flapping
- smell of the ses
- waves crashing
- this one is probably bad but you could give people colour auras, so an evil person's is black, a passionate person red, etc.
- Lavender or Rosemary
- Smell of warm alcohol
- Burnt rubber
- Mown grass
- Smell or taste of rusted metal?
- earth
- feel of sunshine on your skin

That's all i can remember, i don't know if they'd make good echos but i tried :D
