Destitute Dan: The Big Pacific Wake Up (Part 1) by Daniel Newcomer
Born in 1988, Daniel Newcomer spent most of his childhood with his nose deep into a whole assortment of books, reading everything from Goosebumps and Fear Street to the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. Daniel never went anywhere without at least one book to read, and by the time he reached junior high school he started writing comedic, fantasy stories that were by all means purely bizarre. As his life matured he grew quite fond of the classics, making the unabridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo his greatest accomplishment in reading. Daniel also matured his writing life as well, growing into poetry in journalism. His first experience in journalism publishing was for his high school, Monroe High, came with his first experience in dealing with a libel suit from the lunch ladies, after publishing a piece regarding the general opinion of the school’s lunch food. For the rest of the school year, his writing brought him terrible food. From then on, Daniel has only continued to grow his writing career and ideology regarding writing, journalism, and the need for literature in society. For Daniel, writing and being a writer goes beyond the simple act of writing, as he feels that writing encompasses a person’s entire life, from their stream of consciousness to their window of perception. It’s all about the experience according to Daniel, as those experiences can shape the unique way that a writer can tell others a story, and therefore the story, although it has been told many times before, will always be different and hopefully shed new lights on the way that the reader enriches their own life. On the other hand and in a simpler tone, Daniel just loves to write things that he thinks “sound cool.” As a lifelong reader, writing for Daniel is like experiencing a story as it unfolds, where it is impossible to look at the last page just to know if the character survives. In order for Daniel to write, he also feels the need to live, including various activities in his life such as sky diving, water skiing, mountain climbing, cross country biking, pita delivery boy, and harmonica wailing. Everyone’s experiences are different, and therefore if anyone wants to write, they can; the only thing that Daniel feels you need to write is a couple bottles of bum glue.
