Well, I’ve just finished revising my Creepy Faces manuscript–what I’ve got of it, anyway.
(I don’t know about y’all, but I just can’t do that whole “don’t stop writing until you’ve got a finished first draft” thing. It goes against every instinct in my body, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my twenty-nine years, it’s that you should ALWAYS TRUST YOUR BODY’S INSTINCTS.)
(FALSE. That was a joke.)
Anyway, so I’ve been going back through what I’ve written so far, cleaning it up as much as possible and trying to take it from Bits Of Story to Whole Story, which is a very difficult process, as many of you know.
And already I can see that I’ve completely forgotten about one VERY IMPORTANT plot thread. I basically just left it dangling somewhere around Chapter 4.
Do you know how many words I have?
I BET YOU’LL NEVER GUESS.
(Hint: It’s in the title of this post.)
OMG HOW DID YOU KNOW? That’s right! I have 53,092 words in this draft! AND THEY DON’T (completely) SUCK!
In some circles (coughNaNocough) that would be considered a COMPLETE DRAFT.
But, of course, it’s not. Because it’s not…well…complete. I haven’t reached the end of the story yet. I’m close-ish, but I’m not there. Several things still need to happen (not the least of which is picking up that plot thread from Chapter 4 and weaving it back into the story), and even when it is “done,” it will be nowhere close to DONE.
But that’s when my very favorite stage begins: Beta edits!
I know. Some people HATE this stage. But I completely and totally LOVE IT. No matter how good I think the story is after I’ve done all I can do, it gets about 500% MOAR BETTER with each round of Beta edits. And that makes Mama happy.
How about you? Where are you in your WIP?
