Yes - it's true! Shirley Marr has packed her suitcases and is now catching the next unicorn outta here!

So as such, this will be my very last post and I will be online for a few days to field any responses and just to round things off.

There has been a singular incident which has made me make this decision, but as my mantra has always been "Keep it classy (BB)", I decline to publicly divulge any details. Just know that it definitely did not occur on Goodreads itself and was definitely not caused by any member of Goodreads.

The incident did make me think about the nature of authors using Goodreads as reviewers and although I have no problem with this concept - and I suspect many of you don't have an issue with me doing so either - I am after all, part of the "industry" and it be best that I commit 100% to being on that particular side and no longer blur the boundary.

But my time here was incredibly fun and I will miss all my friends, especially the little Aussie contingent, the group of "Moll Dolls". Just wipe a tear away then. Silly Shirley.

Do understand one thing:

Two years ago, I sat on the panel on the topic of social media at a writers festival and I publicly denounced Goodreads to a sold-out room that included bloggers, industry insiders and members of the media. Yes! I denounced Goodreads! I said that Goodreads scared me, the members scared me, the reviews scared me and I would never touch it with a barge pole.

Later on… back on the ranch... I decided that I needed to face my fears and understand why "peoplz were so meanz" so I joined Goodreads as a Goodreads Author and I got down to business. I don't know what I expected. To put on my David Attenborough and prove that the site was full of savages I suppose.

But instead, the very first few people I friended (which incidentally turned out to be the Aussies) were really nice, made me feel so welcome and were actually... wait for it... in it for the books. YES. They didn't get paid, they did it for the love. If they loved a book they shouted it from the rafters and they didn't receive the salary of a publicist, while doing something utterly more priceless. And once in a while there's a bung book so they just say it because dammit, they're entitled to that too.

As I forced myself into the shoes of a reviewer, I surprisingly found myself understanding "how things worked" and one day - I finally understood it. I "got it". I got the whole freedom of speech thing, I wanted to write smartass entertaining reviews, I wanted to be truthful and…

OMG I THINK I FOUND MYSELF!!11!! I r a reviewerz! Gah! Are my author friends going to think I am a traitor? (as it turned out, I had none, so that was an easy question to answer. And regardless, the answer turned out to be yes).

I don't care if people give me one or two stars anymore! (especially if they are as cute as this one. Aww). At the beginning I only wanted to rate books 3 stars and above. I found that this is IMPOSSIBLE. Full stop. So I quite naturally, through the process, evolved into a reviewer that gave anything from one to five stars.

If only every author did what I did, then they would understand Goodreads as well as I finally understood it. And if I was ever invited back on that writers festival panel I would say that not only would I touch Goodreads, I would touch it all over in a completely tasteful way.

I've learnt a lesson. I hope that I've been a good author and taught you that there's hope for "us" yet.

So thanks for the memories. I'm kinda proud I'm leaving Goodreads on a sweet note, on my own terms and not because I'm running off on a criez or being forced out (is that a first?)

If I could go back in time and do it all over? Yes. Yes. YES

I won't delete this account. I might come back in a year or so if I have a new book to do a write up on. But I will no longer be an active member. I will leave all my reviews intact for posterity and if you read and like them, then I thank you in advance.

Lastly: I got interviewed here and referred to myself as the David Bowie of YA (LOL). Anyway, you remember how he killed off Ziggy and everyone thought it was the end? Well, David Bowie is more than just Ziggy Stardust. I'll leave you with that thought ;)

To shamelessly quote myself -

"This is not goodbye; this is just see you later. So I say see you for now. I just don't know how soon is now. I sit in the middle and I wait."

I love youse all!

I love you <3 and I hope you do come back one day and hopefully by then I will have gotten my grubby paws on your books and actually read them =)

Sarah Boo!

I love your presence in my feed and the level-headedness you bring to every discussion. I know we haven't interacted much, but I wish you all the best in the next phase of your internetdom.

I think we all need a GROUP HUG!

I'm gonna miss you Shirley xxx

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Steph Aw, no! Shiiiiirley!

You are indeed one of the good ones. Keep on keeping on, sister.

message 10: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Count me among the people with something in their eyes. I'll miss you so much, Shirley! I wish you'd stay on in a non-reviewing capacity, even, but I suppose this is what you must do. I hope you'll come back!

message 11: by Isamlq (new)

Isamlq Aaw.... I've enjoyed your reviews, and I also got a kick out of the the few times we did interact. Bye.. for now!

Bonnie You'll definitely be missed Shirley. Take care! Bye!... for now? :)

message 13: by Shirley (new)

Shirley Marr I promise this is not the end. It will have a romantic comedy ending - girl from Big Bad Author Land is sent to infiltrate Goodreads. Girl actually grows to love Goodreads and the friends she makes. Girl is forced to go back to Big Bad Author Land. But she will continue to love and see you all. Promise.

Thanks for the beautiful comments. And NO crying!

Jessie (Ageless Pages Reviews) This makes me sad. You're one of the authors I always think of as rock-solid, intelligent, funny and down to earth. I never got to know you as well as I'd liked (and planned), but you are one of the good ones, Shirley, and GR will be the poorer for not having you.

I'll keep my eye out for your books and hope to see more from you soon.

Be well. :)

message 15: by Flannery (new)

Flannery "And if I was ever invited back on that writers festival panel I would say that not only would I touch Goodreads, I would touch it all over in a completely tasteful way.

Liar. I know you'd touch it in inappropriate ways.

We'll miss you around here, that's for sure. Or at least I will:-/ xx

message 16: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Go forth and spread joy!!! :)

Thanks for being sane, gracious and classy. Many authors could learn a lesson from you.

message 17: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I'm going to miss you around here, Shirley. It's been a pleasure reading your reviews and discussing books with you. You've been the model of what authors should be on Goodreads. I've always appreciated your candor and insights. I'll always be on the lookout for your books. :)

message 18: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Going to miss you, Shirley. You'll definitely be missed around here. :)

message 19: by Belle (new)

Belle Nooooooo. Shirley! Pile up on Shirley! Don't let her go!

OK OK if you must. Excuse me while I get this dust out of my eye...

Shirley, I'm honoured to have gotten to know you a little here on GR and on your blog, and love that you do things on your own terms. Including this. You're an inspiration and I respect you so much.

Moll Dolls 4 lyf.

*cough*TWITTER*cough*

message 20: by Wendy Darling (new)

Wendy Darling Oh NO. I'm so sorry you're leaving, Shirley, you are one of my favorite people here--author or reviewer.

I am really glad you're not deleting this account, however, and I am going to cross my fingers that you decide to come back someday. In the meantime, you know who you can call if you need cinnamon bears shipped from the U.S.

xoxo Love to you. I will hunt you down if I'm ever in Perth.

oliviasbooks Huuuuuuuuuuuh? I am speechless, Shirley. I thought you were reviewing books on your blog even before joining Goodreads. You were THE author who stayed herself. And before I joined the community in 2009 primarily to list my reading history somewhere I had not heard anything about it that sounded remotely like «mean people».

message 22: by Zoë (last edited Jul 24, 2012 10:39PM) (new)

Zoë I swear I am not going to cry.

I hope you come back someday :)

message 23: by Lisa O. (new)

Lisa O. What a sad day it is Shirley. I haven't been around much either lately but I will miss your reviews for sure. Let's look on the bright side: does that mean you'll have more time to write?! I want more books by Shirley Marr!!

message 24: by Kat Kennedy (new)

Kat Kennedy Oh no, Shirley! I am so sorry to see you go! I will miss you, dearest!

message 26: by aidanadia (new)

From one Aussie to another, cheers mate. :)

message 29: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Time for the super cool, secret Ostraylian handshake you taught me. Ready? *Kangaroo paw*

I'll miss you, Shirley Marr! I didn't even get to tell you about the time I semi-stalked Craig Silvey at ALA in your honor, or honour.

message 30: by jo (new)

jo mo @shirley: alright, then you're not going to be active in goodreads, but you're still going to keep reviewing on books on marrs, right?!
x joe

message 31: by Beth (new)

Beth ^ The answer to joe's question better be yes, shirley!

You are one of my favourite reviewers on here, writer or otherwise, and I'm genuinely very sad to see you go. *blinks very hard and fast*

message 34: by AnnaLund (new)

AnnaLund see, I don't know you at all, but this post? makes me want to read everything you've ever written.

authors, take note.

message 35: by Catie (new)

Catie This is a very sad day. I'm so thankful that you braved the savagery of goodreads and gave us all a chance. ;) For my part, I want to say that you are one of the few authors here who have proven to me that authors can be fully-functioning, critical-review-writing members of goodreads. I hope you don't stay away forever - don't be a stranger!

Eyehavenofilter This is very depressing... I feel a little angst... And a lot sad.

message 37: by The UHQ Nasanta (new)

The UHQ Nasanta I haven't read any of your books (not much of a YA reader) nor your reviews (I think) but I'm sorry you are leaving. Good luck with everything!

message 38: by Noelle (new)

Noelle Aw MAN. This bittersweetly blows, but I understand--I GUESS ;) Will miss you on here for sure, Shirley!

message 39: by Kate (new)

Kate Copeseeley I have several author friends who've done it and I don't blame them. I've thought about it myself, but for some odd reason I just keep coming back. Maybe someday I'll make an anonymous acct for myself so I can "leave" and still follow all my favorite reviewers.

Good luck on your exodus!

message 40: by Shirley (new)

Shirley Marr Thank you, every each one of you.

To answer the question, I will no longer be updating my reviewing site. Unfortunately, I now agree with my aggravator that I am not the good Aussie YA ambassador I thought I was, and instead am irresponsible, unkind and ruining people's careers.

So I will now refrain from making any public comments on other people's books, in either a positive or negative capacity. Sure I could stay on and only post positive reviews, but as you know, positive reviews almost always contain critical elements too and I do not want to post censored, fake sounding reviews.

Don't be sad. I will direct all my energies into creating a nice emo novel for you and I hope you can enjoy it next year, which is not really that long at all :)

message 41: by Mands (new)

Mands If I send you more Twilight bars, will you stay? :(

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with Archer. :(

But clearly, Miss Marr, you are one of the classy ones!! (And an Aussie too! Feeling proud, yep, you bet:))

message 43: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I agree with Archer too. But I look forward to the time you fly back upon your magical unicorn and grace GR with your presence again!

Now get cracking on that book, lady! x

If you're irresponsible, unkind, and ruining people's careers, then I don't even want to know what I am.

You will be missed, dearly.

message 45: by The Holy Terror (new)

The Holy Terror Archer wrote: "You're the grand high queen meanie...."

Am not.
