Did you ever see that episode of Twilight Zone when the banker is in the vault when "the bomb" goes off - he lives though no one else does and he's left alone with plenty of food, plenty of time, and, happily, plenty of books. Happy ending, right? No, of course he breaks his glasses which steals his ability to read - his joy in life.

That's how I feel. No, my glasses are okay and I have a spare pair but with my day job, my long commute and my own efforts to write I find that I have very little time to read. If I do find a few minutes it's hard to keep my weary eyes open long enough to swallow a chapter or two.

I never really appreciated audio books until I listened to some old radio shows an AM station in LA began to re-run in the 90s. It made my commute easier and I found myself planning to leave work later just to make sure I could hear my favorite programs. Enjoying that experience I checked out some audio books from the library just to see if I would enjoy "reading" books that way and, sure enough, it brought instant gratification.

If you are like me, too busy to read and slowly dying inside because of it, try your hand at reading with your ears. It works mate.

Kathleen Nice blog, Loni,

I remember that Twilight Zone, too, and I still think about how horrible it turned out.

K.B. Inglee Being visual, I can't do the audio book thing. I forget what I hear instantly. I gave a relative Audible for Christmas and she loves it. Nice blog.

Kaye George Yes, that was a horrible ending! I've worn glasses since I was 10, so it spoke to me. I can read without them, though, just can't see 10 feet away.

I always have a book going in the car. It keeps me awake on long drives and gets another book read. Good post!

Loni Emmert Thanks KB. I didn't think I'd be able to enjoy audio either but luckily I can. Though my mind has been known to wander and I have to hit the rewind button...

Kaye, I remember my sister getting emotional at the end. I'm also near-sighted and didn't (when I was young) understand why he needed glasses to read.
