When someone does something good, it is always questioned. Keep up the good work Greg. I love your books and what you do. Good luck with the surgery. You will have the thoughts and prayers of many.
I think it's always good to investigate the financials of any big organization. It helps keep everyone honest. I am glad Greg has responded to this to show CAI's side as well. I am still a huge fan of Greg's and the CAI's and I hope this will only bring more attention to the causes they are fighting for.
I remain a big fan.....nothing in life is perfect....Greg Mortenson is as close as I have seen....when an individual and his work have far reaching effects and begin to receive international recognition, controversy is never far behind. I am willing to concede that there may have been discrepancies in certain accounts but that does not in any way take away from the selfless accomplishments of the man who IS the CAI....I salute him, in his undertaking a mission in the "last places on earth" where it takes a unique mix of courage, heart and sacrifice to make a difference in the lives of so many forgotten people who deserve better....Good Luck with your health....God Bless you with all the strength and years to continue to follow your heart in serving His people.
After having read Three Cups of Tea,I became a huge fan of Mortenson and his work. That was three years ago. Strangely enough, till then very few Pakistanis had heard about him.Apart from honouring him with a national award, there wasn't much promotion of his work through Pakistani media. Besides,on our frequent trips to the Northern Pakistan,we didn't come across any locals who said anything about his schools;though we had visited one odd local school as well. This can be attributed as pure coincidence of course. However, one finds a few discrepancies or "oddities" in his second book:a)the paradigm shift regarding his alliance with the US Army in the wake of that passionate speech delivered at Pentagon -in which he strongly refuses any assistance from the US Army- is perplexing,to say the least. b)his instant acceptance of a tea or lunch invitation by the then president of Pakistan while he was at the most important juncture of his journey in one of the remotest areas of Afghanistan and where he had just arrived after a very hard and exhausting journey is so out of character that Mortenson himself questions his impetuosity in the following pages of the book. Why on earth did he do that? Especially when nothing significant came off it. As a Pakistani allow me to say that his books may help him in raising funds in America but at our end his work should speak louder than his books. I'd appeal to CAI to document their work properly and make good use of our electronic media if they want to maintain their credibility in Pakistan.
