Beautifully drawn but I was thrown off by the first part of the book being totally realistic and the second half completely switched out of nowhere (for me)to become fantasy. Worth checking out if you know that's coming...

Great voice and what a fine debut novel. Kokie had me fooled: she captures the male psyche and dives in deeper than most male authors. This one's a keeper.

Amazing book about a bookstore like no other. Brilliantly conceived, this documentary novel surprised and enlightened me. A wonderful way to capture a long lost time and place, Lewis Michaux's Harlem bookstore, its hero of an owner, and the importanc...more

“When gangs took over the [abandoned public land in Philadelphia] and the neighborhood took a turn for the worse, horses became a way of saving lives. By getting boys interested in raising a horse rather than killing another human being, these cowboys gave the youth something positive: father figures, focus, and the ability to stand tall.”
