about this author
I write the Consumed column for the New York Times Magazine.
My new book, Buying In: The Secret Dialogue Between What We Buy and Who We Are, was published in June.
As a relative newcomer to Goodreads, my bookshelf is relatively threadbare. I'm still deciding the best way to use the site, but I'm thinking a) it'll be in a "starting now" way, tracking reading from April 2008 forward rather than trying to reconstruct my entire reading history, and b) just voluntary reading, leaving out the books I sort of *have to* read for work and research.

"I admit that I certainly counted myself among those who figured I was brandproof. After all, I'm a journalist who writes about this stuff for a living, so if anybody can "see through" it, it's me. Then Nike bought Converse." ...More
